Executive Director, Kierra Johnson, joined the National LGBTQ Task Force in 2018 as Deputy Executive Director but was already engaged with the organization, previously serving on the National LGBTQ Task Force’s board of directors and its National Action Council. Johnson came to the Task Force after serving as (Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity) URGE’s Executive Director with a wealth of experience in organizational leadership and management, program development, youth leadership and reproductive justice. As a bisexual Black woman, Johnson is one of few out queer-identified women of color at the helm of a national LGBTQ organization.

She is recognized as a national expert on queer and reproductive rights issues and has testified in front of the U.S. House of Representatives and has appeared in Newsweek, The New York Times, Fox News, Feministing.com and National Public Radio. Johnson also serves on the boards of directors of the General Service Foundation, Groundswell Fund, and Guttmacher Institute.

Together, they debunk myths and misinformation around critical race theory, a term that, although coined in the 1980s, has regained traction since the tragic death of George Floyd and the United States’ racial reckoning. They also discuss Derrick Bell, the architect behind this theory, and his influence. They also discuss how CR has evolved into one that is currently weaponized by conservative candidates in recent local elections and the upcoming midterm elections. A Conversation with a Goddess of Democracy Jan 27, 2022

This week, Joi Chaney, our Executive Director and Senior Vice President of Policy and Advocacy, sits down with Helen Butler, Executive Director of the Georgia Coalition of the People’s Agenda. They breakdown the current nationwide attack on voting rights, in which Georgia Is ground zero, and Helen Butler – known as a “Goddess of Democracy” -- has been on the front lines. They also talk the U.S. Senate’s recent failure to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis act, which would have protected the right to vote no matter where you live. More importantly, they lay out the plan for overcoming these set backs, including what you can do to ensure everyone’s voice is heard in the 2022 elections and beyond.

Texas Democrats and the fight for voting rights Aug 11, 2021
