SIM Ep 88 IWD 2: Dr Gill Sutherland on Millicent Fawcett Mar 08, 2018
    Show notes

Happy International Women’s Day – up the women!

To celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, we’re running a series of interviews with some kick-ass broads. Ayesha Hazarika talks to us about politics, comedy and how the two can go hand-in-hand; Laura Bates chats about her new book Misogynation and some truly startling facts and figues about everyday sexism. Historian and Newnham fellow Dr Gill Sutherland explains the important role Millicent Fawcett played in the suffrage movement and England rugby captain Sarah Hunter talks sport in general and rugby in particular.

Here’s Dr Gill Sutherland, historian and Newnham College fellow explaining why Millicent Fawcett was such a big suffrage deal and very different to the Pankhursts. Just a heads-up: we recorded this in a room at Newnham that turned out to be a tad echoey.

It seems exactly the right time to big up some charities doing excellent work for women, but desperately in need of your cash, should you have some to spare: Refuge, Rape Crisis, the Abortion Support Network, the Homeless Period, Women in Sport, The Samaritans and just putting a few extra items, including sanitary hygiene products, in your local food bank.

They chatted about Ruby's new book, Eat Up!, the "clean eating" backlash, and the joy of food. Plus, remember Supermarket Sweep? Just WHAT can you buy for less than a tenner in a newsagent, these days? Our Maddie and Ruby find out...

Our Hannah Dunleavy managed to snag half an hour with Bafta-winning actress Monica Dolan this week and here is the result, a proper good chat about her new play The B*easts, the joys of the Edinburgh Festival, playing Rose West and snogging Alan Partridge in a disabled toilet. SIM Ep 81 Chops 25: Literary gems Feb 18, 2018
    Show notes

It's two for the price of one on Chops this week. This plate is a pile of delicious reading, as suggested by Anne Miller, our books expert, QI elf and all-round top bird. She brought three books into the studio: Lucy Mangan's Bookworm, Joanna Cannon's Three Things About Elsie and Gail Honeyman's Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. The chat also includes tales of Hannah's hunts for land-based smugglers, Mick's adventures with fighty mice and the joyous image of pensioners at the Whitby Goth Weekender. If you need us, we'll be pushing hard on the back of a wardrobe with hope in our eyes and Narnia in our heart.

    Show notes

This week, Team Noonan, Dunleavy and Offord find out just how loyal you should be with your cash (and how much inertia is costing us) thanks to more solid nous from our personal finance expert Vix Leyton, whose advice is always bang on the money. Anne Miller gives Mickey and Hannah the gen on what books to read right now, and our human film guide Yosra Osman shares her cinematic must-sees as Oscar season gets underway.

Jenny Off The Blocks is all over the Olympics, Dunleavy Does Disney's The Black Cauldron, and a meaty Sexism of the Week nearly makes our Offord shit a lung, laughing.

SIM Ep 78 Pod 27: newsing, casting and living with MS Feb 07, 2018
    Show notes

This week, Team Noonan, Dunleavy and Offord chat to Miss L about the acting industry and @proresting, her Twitter timeline raising awareness of casting call bullshit. Comedian Angela Barnes talks Newsjack and how to write satirical comedy in an era where the news itself has jumped the shark, and journalist Nadine McBay offers a beautiful, lyrical insight into living with Multiple Sclerosis. Jen's letting off steam about grid girls and general sexist nonsense in sport and Dunleavy does Disney's Chicken Little. Sweet fancy Christ. Oh and there's slurping. Joyously noisy slurping.
