SIM Ep 250 Chops 106: America Is Hard To See Jul 14, 2019
    Show notes

In one of two Sunday Chops this week, Hannah and Mick talk to Priscilla Holbrook, one of the team behind America is Hard To See, which is heading to the Edinburgh Fringe after an award-winning off-Broadway run. It tells the story of Miracle, a community of paroled sex offenders in rural Florida, so we talked to Priscilla about how she got involved, forgiveness and whether calling such men "monsters" does more harm than good.

SIM Ep 251 Chops 107: Let's talk about death... when you're living with cancer Jul 14, 2019
    Show notes

In this one of two Chops this week, Hannah and Mick catch up with restaurateur, writer and blogger Saima Thompson, who just also happens to be a stage 4 cancer patient. We talked about HOW to talk about death, why it’s important, the reactions of others, cancer and mental health and how perspective changes when you're prognosis is terminal.

We’ve teamed up with Macmillan again going a bit more in-depth into the topics around death that we touched on at the panel event we did with them back in May. Our first Chops guest was the brilliant Poppy Mardall, founder and director of Poppy’s Funerals, a modern-day funeral company aiming to revolutionise the funeral trade, who was full of incredible insider knowledge that left Mick and Jen agog.

If it gets you thinking about how and where you would like to be cared for at the end of your life, choosing the funeral you’d like, the legacy you want to leave behind or who you want to remember in your will, Macmillan has information and resources to support the conversation and help you have it. SIM Ep 250 Outside The Box #13 Jul 12, 2019
    Show notes

We're taking a trip to the Upside Down in this month's Outside The Box, when Hannah and Mick chat Stranger Things. There's a whole heap of Matt Berry in What We Do In The Shadows and The Year of The Rabbit. Jen's finally watched Big Little Lies. Plus there's Waco and Surviving America's Most Hated Family. Yes, that is a lot of TV to have watched. You're welcome.

SIM Ep 249 Pod 79: We need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle Jul 10, 2019
    Show notes

That’s right, Terminator 2 gets the Dunleavy Does Dystopia treatment in this week’s episode. Hold onto your trousers, Arnie fans. There are more bikes, too, as Jen chats to Caroline Folmer, bad-ass cyclist and member of the Donnons des Elles au Velo, who, if you’re not aware of them, are the female cyclists tackling the 21-stage, 3,351km track of the Tour de France. Because it’s NO WOMEN ALLOWED in the actual race. Fucksake.

Mick catches up with US journalist and author Lisa Taddeo about her remarkable new book, Three Women, which explores female desire by charting the intimate lives of three real American women, and poet and playwright Marika McKennell tells the team about her work in pupil referral units and her new play E8, heading up to the Edinburgh Fringe next month.

Over in the Bush Telegraph and SOTW, Trump’s not down on his country’s history, Georgie Boy Osborne couldn’t spell impostor syndrome if it was his job to do so, and the Dalai Lama’s ruining men’s rights’ hashtags.

SIM Ep 248 Chops 105: Let's Talk About Death... Funerals Jul 07, 2019
    Show notes

Poppy Mardall, founder and director of Poppy’s Funerals, stopped by to share her incredible insider knowledge about what happens within the funeral industry. A lot of it was Brand New Information, at least for Mick and Jen, who basically sat open-mouthed when they found out what you can legally do in your back garden.

This is the first in a series of Chops running throughout July, in which we talk about death. You may remember that back in May, Hannah and Mick hosted a panel event talking about death for Macmillan. The chat was fascinating and the reaction was ‘more please!’ from listeners and panel guests alike. And we don’t like to disappoint.

If it gets you thinking about how and where you would like to be cared for at the end of your life, choosing the funeral you’d like, the legacy you want to leave behind or who you want to remember in your will, Macmillan has information and resources to support the conversation and help you have it. Talking about death can be difficult but having honest conversations and taking small but simple steps, such as writing a will, can help you and your family prepare emotionally, practically and financially. Macmillan Cancer Support offer a will-writing service to help you take that first step in planning for the future, so you can get on with living life as fully a you can. SIM Ep 247 Pod 78: Troweling it on, Trump-ing off and throwing in Jul 03, 2019
    Show notes

This week, team Noonan, Dunleavy and Offord catch up with writer, actress and straight-up legend among women, Rebecca Humphries, to chat about her “no bullshit” beauty blog, The Trowel, and what it’s like to be in the eye of a media shitstorm. Hannah has a natter with comedian and bona-fide American Kate McCabe, to find out more about the upcoming Democratic Primary over in the US of A. And in Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen gets the lowdown on the forthcoming Netball World Cup from luminary of the game and BBC Sport pundit, Sara Bayman.

Dunleavy Does Dystopia takes on the harrowing Children of Men, while in the Bush Telegraph the team hope, as ever, to wake from the dystopian nightmare of the Boris, Brexit and bumholes.

SIM Ep 255 Gig 44; Lederer, Adams and Millican Jun 26, 2019
    Show notes

Back in April, Mickey and Hannah met comedian Jayde Adams and the legend that is Helen Lederer for another weird and wonderful In Conversation event. And this time, the boss, Sarah Millican dropped in, too. We talked about what we'd save from our homes in a fire, what stories stuck with us from childhood and what happened that time the cat sat on Jayde's mum's head. Tuck in!

SIM Ep 244 Chops 103: Period power with Maisie Hill Jun 23, 2019
    Show notes

The menstrual cycle: it and its associated hormones (big hitters = oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone) have a massive impact on women's lives. And it's not all painful cramps and mood swings. You may have heard Mickey advertising an Audible book called Period Power, which is an unputdownable 126,000 words by women's health practitioner, birth doula and go-to authority on all things menstruation, Maisie Hill.

Mick and Jen had a natter with Maisie, and we're pretty sure what she has to say will excite and inspire you to harness those hormones and make them work better in your world – and make you ever so curious about these incredible bodies we inhabit, but which have had so little research attention. Oh, and prepare to hear a few facts, good and bad, that will blow your mind.
