Southern Ground Hunting - Rut Hunting Strategies | How Parker Killed His Third Alabama Buck of 2020 Dec 16, 2020
    Show notes

This week the guys are breaking down a couple of rut hunts that Parker had last week, resulting in filling his third buck tag for the season in Alabama. There were a lot of things that went into this hunt. 1) The grind. Perhaps one thing most people who kill a lot of public land bucks share in common is the desire to grind for as long as it takes. Go the extra mile, wake up 3 hours earlier, go places many are not willing to go, and do it for however long it takes. 2) Understanding thermals. As Parker talks about these hunts, he shares how much having a good understanding of thermals has contributed to his success more than almost anything. It's not hard to read buck sign and know what area to hunt. The hard part is knowing where to set up to get the opportunity to kill those bucks. Thermals can make or break you! 3) Hunting the area at the right time to have an encounter with a buck on your first sit... the rut! Mature bucks are in their most vulnerable state during the rut. If you have a spot you know holds big bucks, the rut is the best time to go after them. Southern Ground Hunting is powered by Simple Cast.

They discuss how deer behavior changes after the breeding is over and again once gun hunting pressure is introduced. Tom talks about how keeping pressure on your property as low as possible during the first shotgun season can make it an oasis for deer and increasing your odds for the second season. He also talks about how food and cover become the priority for the deer herd and how hunters can take advantage of that type of movement. Iowa Sportsman is Powered by Simplecast

DIY Sportsman - Iowa Shotgun Recap Dec 10, 2020
    Show notes

I traveled down to the state of Iowa for the first time to perform a firearms deer hunt. The gun tags for non-residents take significantly fewer points to draw than do non-resident archery tags. In some zones, this could allow a hunting opportunity nearly every year, in a timeframe that doesn't interfere with any other rut hunting. My primary strategy with no prior boots-on-the-ground knowledge was to utilize e-scouting with an emphasis on expected hunter pressure to determine the best locations. In addition to breaking down how the strategy worked out, I also talk about whether or not I'd plan on doing another shotgun hunt in the future versus applying for points towards an archery tag every few years. Clothing usage was also something I experimented with, using only puffy layers as my primary outerwear to scale the large hills. DIY Sportsman is Powered by Simplecast
