Ohio Huntsman - Opening Day Of Turkey Season May 12, 2021

Show notes

This week on the show we tell our stories from the 2021 Spring Turkey opening weekend. We took advantage of the earlier start to the spring season and hunted opening day for the first time down at our hunting camp. We recorded the episode inside the cabin for the first time after our opening day hunts. Jeff heard some gobbles and tried his best to get them to close the distance. Jason also had them gobbling first thing and tried to seal the deal and Jacob laid eyes on a mature Tom right off the roost and called it in just like the videos but learned a hard lesson when it reached the edge of his comfortable range. Land & Legacy - Soil Health Podcast Series with Ray Archuleta May 11, 2021

Show notes

Ray Archuleta has had a long career in the world of agronomy and promoting healthy soils. Starting out with the NRCS (Natural Resource Conservation Services) to now serving as part of the Soil Health Academy that helps educate farmers and landowners on promoting healthy soils. This has been a long time coming to bring Ray into our Soil Health Series and we couldn't be more excited! Soil Health has become a concern for many people in the food plot world but it's important we don't chase fads, product endorsements, and nonsensical practices. Let's face it, food plotters, like ourselves like to play farmer. Ray is a consultant dealing with farmers day in and day out, and is a farmer himself. The clear line between the ag world and recreational hunting land is farmers are relying on their practices to make an income, hunters aren't. With that being said we found it important to go straight to one of the most recognized agronomists in the world today to discuss soil health. We get his answer on many practices for soil health including, grazing, perennial versus annual, monoculture versus diversity, and why we should be focusing on all of our land not just areas of crops or food plots. It's a very interesting discussion so dive in with Ray "The Soil Guy" Archuleta. #Forloveoftheland Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast

Huntavore - Peak to Plate with Annie Weisz May 11, 2021

Show notes

This episode of Huntavore highlights Annie Weisz, author of Peak to Plate. Peak to Plate is a website all dedicated to things using wildgame. Annie began her adventure by being along side her mother in the kitchen. Developing a love and passion for food, even her day job has her looking at nutrition being a Dietitian. Annie has been surrounded by hunting and fishing, her step father teaching her to flyfish, joining her husband on hunts for Elk (even while pregnant!). Annie has had opportunity to play with wild game, but when she had her boys it took on more of an importance. Annie started her website as a way to document her recipes. She loves bold flavors, and interesting cuisine. So translating her wonderful protein into dishes that are very exciting and different from the norm. Personally, Nick was looking at the Whitetail Sushimi. Anytime you are consuming raw meat, you should take great care, but the flavor and texture that you get doubled with an asian ponzu sauce is well worth the effort. Annie also translated a staple in India into a fantastic Butter Pheasant recipe. Land & Legacy - The Truth Behind the Food Plot Seed Industry May 11, 2021

Show notes

As we have discussed before there are some great marketing schemes out there floating around the hunting industry, one of these being food plot seed. We aim to expose this week while talking with the folks at Stratton Seed Company, just how different are these seeds from one brand to another? It is very common to experience sales pitches regarding seed selection and superiority with frequently used food plot varieties, however, we expose the truth from the origins of this seed and lack of variety among most food plot seed types. Sure there are some varieties of soybeans, oats, or radishes that have some differences in genetics or growth rates, but when you see purple top turnip in a blend from various seed companies, it's still just purple top turnip and likely comes from the same grower. So, the question becomes if there isn't much difference in seed selection or origin, then why do costs vary so much? Well, we answer that question as well in this podcast. If you want to hear transparency from a genuine food plot company, then tune in! You may be surprised at what you find out! #ForLoveoftheLand Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast
