How To Hunt Deer - Post-Season Activities Feb 05, 2026
    Show notes

Discover how late-season deer scouting and shed hunting can transform your hunting success this year. With winter’s unique terrain clues and strategic timing, you'll learn how to find more antlers—and understand deer movement like never before. Whether you're a seasoned hunter or new to the game, this episode offers actionable insights that will keep you sharp all year round.

Deer behavior expert Dan Johnson joins us to break down the power of winter scouting. You'll discover why this dormant season is actually the best time to analyze terrain, track old sign, and pinpoint bedding areas—even with limited snow and changing weather conditions. From the importance of killing pressure for better shed discovery to using trail cameras and mineral supplements effectively, we reveal tactics that give you the edge during the off-season.

    We cover essential topics like:

    • How to identify and interpret deer sign during winter months
    • The real impact of pressure and weather on antler shedding timing
    • Practical strategies for barnacle-breaking terrain analysis, including water sources and travel corridors
    • When to go shed hunting for optimal results—plus, common rookie mistakes to avoid
    • The benefits of late-season observation for better deer herd management and future hunts

Why does this matter? Because the true advantage in deer hunting comes from understanding their habits during the off-season—long before the season starts. Overlooking winter scouting means missing out on crucial intel that can lead to bigger bucks and more successful hunts come fall. And with more states considering shed hunting regulations, knowing the best practices now will keep you compliant and ahead of the curve.

Perfect for hunters wanting to deepen their knowledge or just looking for fresh tactics to boost their success next season, this episode will change how you approach the winter months. Tune in to learn how to turn the off-season into your secret weapon and start planning your next move today.

Hound Dog Network - HOUND DOGGIN’ IN WEST VIRGINIA Feb 04, 2026
    Show notes

Gary Knapp says he’s married to the prettiest girl in Big Scary, West Virginia. Steve calls him the Will Rogers of the Appalachians. Bear hunters remember him as an effective president and spokes person for the West Virginia Bear Hunter’s Association. Part woodsman, mountaineer and houndsman, Knapp never fails to entertain with his stories and likewise, never fails to inspire with his dedication to keeping the sport of hound hunting alive for future generations.

Knapp believes upcoming changes to West Virginia laws concerning hunting over bait will be detrimental to the bear population. Steve tends to take the middle ground on the issue but the conversation is no less important to anyone that is concerned with the continuance of black bear hunting in the Mountain State as it reveals all sides of the issue.

Enjoy talk from two mountain men, one in memory, the other in action, as Gone To The Dogs goes hound doggin’ with West Virginian Gary Knapp.

Antler Up - The Craft Behind the Shot | Daniel Parker (Mathews Archery) Feb 04, 2026
    Show notes

Craftsmanship isn’t loud. It’s built quietly—one decision, one detail, one season at a time.

On Episode 307 of the Antler Up Podcast, I’m joined by Daniel Parker from Mathews Archery for a conversation that goes well beyond gear and specs. Daniel works on the front lines at Mathews, spending his days talking with hunters, dealers, and archers—hearing what works, what doesn’t, and what actually matters once the season is over.

We dive into what separates a truly great brand from the rest: attention to detail, responsibility to the hunter, and the discipline to protect core values in an industry that’s constantly evolving. Daniel shares insights from inside Mathews, how real-world hunting feedback shapes the conversations he has every day, and why craftsmanship still matters when trends come and go.

We also talk about the things hunters tend to overthink—and the things they don’t think enough about—when it comes to practice, consistency, and execution under pressure. From lessons learned in the field to patterns Daniel hears season after season, this episode is about understanding the why behind the gear, not just the gear itself.

This isn’t a product episode. It’s a conversation about mindset, responsibility, and doing things the right way—whether you’re building bows, chasing deer, or sharpening your shot process.

If you care about becoming a better hunter, a better archer, and doing things with intention, Episode 307 is for you.

So, grab your gear, sit back, and join us on this episode as we Antler Up!
