Land & Legacy - Hard Mast, Perennial Food Plots, or Soft Mast; Early Season Food Sources Sep 14, 2021
    Show notes

During this podcast, we discuss the varied food resources available to whitetail deer during the 2021 hunting season. When we start to look at patterns that deer are on now, we all know that they are subject to changing rapidly during this time of the year. Oftentimes early season hunting scenarios revolve around white oak acorns. However, this year we believe will be very different. During the spring of 2021, a hard frost during the flowering stage of white oaks really set the stage for the fall crop in this region. In addition, the later portion of summer has turned dry, which is not uncommon, but even so, it makes for very delayed plantings of food plots. To say food is rather limited, can be an understatement as our season opens up for bowhunting this week. So to combat these challenges, we are faced with evaluating food sources closely. Early bedding hunts are very difficult and risky, so hunting deer based on food availability is the alternative strategy. But, this takes close examination and it appears alfalfa and soft mast such as persimmon could be a strong player as the season opens up! Land & Legacy is powered by Simple Cast.

Pennsylvania Woodsman - Heating Up for Hunting with Prescribed Fire Sep 10, 2021
    Show notes

On this week’s episode we interview John Wakefield with the Pennsylvania Game Commission. John is the Fire Program Manager for the state and leads the agency in planning as well as being a “Burn Boss”. We begin the episode with tips and techniques to break down a tract of public land with a recent burn history or a plan to. Burn units are an extremely attractive area – both for game and for people! Use this to your advantage when concentrating your stand locations. From here, we dive into all things fire. From the program start, why units are burned, and the goal of each burn unit. The benefits of burning 12 months out of the year greatly outweigh the drawbacks of vegetation loss during hunting season. Burns will be attractive soon after burns, and typically within 1 growing season will be lush with different browse and forbs. We discuss different habitat types and how each are managed – decide for yourself how to adapt your hunting strategy this fall! Want to know more about prescribed fire in PA? Southern Ground Hunting - Private Land Hunt Turns To Public Land Grind In North Dakota Sep 09, 2021
    Show notes

Parker is recapping his trip to North Dakota in this week's SGH episode. In previous episodes, you may have heard him talk about this hunt, and how it was different from his normal hunt. He was invited to hunt on a leased property with our friends from Tethrd, which was a preset stand with bait piles type of hunt. That's not wrong, it's legal, but it's still not our normal public land grind that we enjoy so much. Parker talks about the challenges of trying to set in a preset spot, and how hard it is sometimes to be patient and wait, instead of going out and trying to make something happen. As the week progressed, and minimal deer were being seen, he made a move to hunt public land and ultimately was successful on the last day. We hope you enjoy this episode! DIY Sportsman - Nebraska Hunt Recap Sep 09, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett and his wife Sam discuss their recent Nebraska public land deer hunt. Nebraska is of course a large state with some varied habitat, but they decided to go to a region where mule deer were more sought after to reduce the likelihood of pressure from other whitetail hunters. In the episode, the couple talks about the challenges they faced, lessons learned about the area and habitat, as well as a recap of their hunting strategy. Sam was successful in shooting a doe, so she talked about her mindset during the closing moments and how it compared to some of her experiences earlier in the week with close calls and calming of nerves. N.F.C - Nine Fingers Unfiltered Observation Hunts Are A Waste Of Time Sep 08, 2021
    Show notes

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, the topic of discussion is observation hunts and whether or not they actually help you or hurt you. Dan breaks down his thought process about this low impact / low success hunting strategy and that seems to be used more than it should. He explains that he used to be a huge fan of using an observation hunt to gain information about deer movement but has since replaced this strategy with more scouting to find fresh sign, current food sources, and terrain features that are conducive to deer movement. Are observation hunts a waste of time? You be the judge. Nine Finger Chronicles is Powered by Simplecast
