Ohio Outdoors - Go West Young Man... or Woman May 25, 2022
    Show notes

This week on the O2 Podcast, THE Ohio Outdoors podcast, the guys got the chance to pick the brain of Mr. Social Media, Dan Mathews. You have probably seen Dan and his wife tearing it up on Tik Tok and Instagram, but the truth is the guy knows a thing or two about hunting too! He’s spent numerous trips out west, and is the host of the Western Rookie podcast. The guys talk to him about what it takes to get in the game out west. How to find the right over the counter tag, apply for points, etc. If you have any interest in going west, this podcast will be a great start, but be sure to also listen to Dan’s podcast for more information.

Paul and Andrew got the ability to get out to the woods one more time for turkey season, but spent most of the time just walking and enjoying a peaceful spring morning. The woods were full of foliage with little room for seeing or hearing any birds. Next year! Summer is upon us and it’s time to get your honey do lists done, spend that quality family time, and prep for the fall. Have a great Memorial Day weekend, and remember the reason for the cookouts and days off!! Thank you to our Veterans!!!

Whitetail Landscapes - Deer Populations and Density Dependence May 24, 2022
    Show notes

In this podcast Moriah Boggess (Deer Biologist, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission) and Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) discuss considerations and the science behind deer populations and density dependence. Moriah explains how to sustain a robust, quality deer herd. The importance of deer density dependence is critical to the planning and management of a herd. Moriah explains density dependence and both contributors discuss landscape carrying capacity and related population dynamics.

Moriah explains what occurs when deer populations are too high. Moriah breaks down habitat quality in multiple scenarios and how certain areas are better situated to support deer populations. Moriah and Jon discuss ways to help improve your property when deer populations are too high. Moriah discusses stress periods in the north and south and how impactful those are on the deer we are trying to support with our management tactics.

Moriah explains how to increase your carry capacity for deer. Additionally, discussions on maximizing and optimizing deer numbers to support hunting properties are broken down further. Moriah provides some rules to consider to increase buck quality and how a biologist evaluates a quality buck. Moriah and Jon end with maintaining appropriate densities and understanding dependence based on the landscape types, nutrition, epigenetics and diseases that impact the deer we are trying to support. Moriah explains the impacts of habitat and other conditions that affect fawn recruitment.

Western Rookie - Planning a First Time Western Archery Hunt May 24, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode of The Western Rookie Dan talks with his good friend Linnea about their upcoming archer mule deer hunt.

Linnea grew up in smalltown Wisconsin where her love for the outdoors and adventure began. Linnea currently travels the country with her dog Akela in their converted Ram ProMaster van. Linnea has been living a nomadic lifestyle for over a year and a half which has only increased her love for wild places and becoming more involved in the outdoors. She picked up fly fishing which sparked a new curiosity for being connected to the land through the pursuit of wild game as a food source. Linnea recently bought a Mathews VXR and plans to hunt her first deer with it this fall. She successfully drew a buck mule deer archery tag for Utah. Dan and Linnea dream about what’s to come in the few short months leading up to both of their first western archery hunts.

Oklahoma Outdoors - Archery Tips with Pro Chris Hammond May 23, 2022

Not only do the two talk shooting form, Chris also talks about his battle with target panic and how it almost caused him to quit shooting competitively all together. He talks about how he dug himself out of it, and the training he did to get to where he is today. John also asks for some good practice scenarios for both target archery and hunting, and finishes with a tough question many have been asking recently. How far of a shot is to far?

Huntavore - Eat What You Kill with Jeremy Critchfield May 23, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by a huge advocate for #eatwhatyoukill, Jeremy Critchfield. Jeremy is the HuntChef and host on Sportsman’s Channel. With 34 years in the culinary profession and a lifetime in the woods, Jeremy has a huge knowledge base and passion for wildgame and the wildharvest. We unpack some food for though ideas, and then put the bead on using your harvested wild turkey. Settle in for an incredible chat on this episode of Huntavore.

Jeremy Critchfield is the co-host of the Sportsman’s Channel Show MTN TOP Outdoors, and a wildgame chef. With a lifetime of experience, Jeremy has made it his business to bring wildgame out of the shadows of being gamey, and into the true light of being real, wholesome, delicious food. HuntChef even went to the lengths of trademarking #eatwhatyoukill. Nick and Jeremy unpack that idea on how we as sportsmen have a 2 fold approach. First is to show the public that we are here for food and meat as much as or even more than the killshot. Second would be to ourselves. We have a responsibility to get the most from our harvest, give thanks for the animal, and to share with others why we go to such lengths and why it's our personal passion to take our meat supply from the woods.

Jeremy gives us a challenge to take our turkey breast meat to the next level. He suggests that by sheeting out a breast, using a sharp knife to butterfly out that piece of white meat, and add a stuffing of your choosing. Roll the sheet back up and cook under a slow even heat. Slice the meat cross the roll and serve a “pinwheel” looking serving of delicous whitemeat and stuffing. Its called a roulade but Jeremy says its not difficult to prepare this crowd pleaser. Jeremy has also put his expertise into a whole line of seasonings and rubs. Check it out at: huntchef.com
