    On today's episode we have Round 2 of taking to Steve Sherk from Pennsylvania as a guest. In the last episode with Steve, the discussion focused more on summer scouting and trail camera strategies. In today's episode, we're taking that information and transitioning into fall. Steve starts out with the story of his buck last year, how he used information from scouting to capitalize, and even how he shifted his strategy according to what he was seeing amongst multiple bucks he was following. Then we also talk about other fall hunting strategies, scrapes, clear cuts, ground set ups, and mature buck tendencies surrounding weather and time of year that Steve sees consistently repeat themselves.

    This week on the Ohio Outdoors Podcast, the guys get to sit down with some of the best the hunting industry has to offer. Mark Kenyon from Wired to Hunt, Cuz Strickland and his grandson Cranky, and Brian and Gage Hall. Covering the gambit of raising kids in the outdoors no matter ages, genders, backgrounds etc. This group really shares what it’s like raising kids outside from the average Ohioan, to some that have been in the industry for a long time.     On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with Massachusetts bowhunter Kevin Martone about deer behavior, the terrain he hunts, and his yearly hunting strategy. Kevin breaks down the properties he hunts and how he uses wetlands and marshes that create edge that funnel deer movement. He hunts on a large piece of property that is owned by a popular non-profit organization that is archery only. This property is shared with other hikers and nature lovers so Kevin also talks about how he deals with that type of pressure.

    On this specific property, Kevin is the hunting coordinator and talks about the how he works with a wildlife biologist to best manage the deer population. This is an interesting episode with several layers of insight in to both conservation and hunting strategy. Enjoy!

    Will is 24 years old and grew up in Southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Will has been part owner of Beartrack Outfitters in Manitoba, Canada since 2018. He jumped into owning a bear hunting outfit having never bear hunted and has been learning the ins and outs of hunting Canadian black bears ever since. His love for bear hunting and conservation spurred him on to start Bearbeans Coffee in 2021 where he gives 10% of the income back to bear research, habitat improvement and conservation. His background as a hunter and hunting outfitter has deepened his knowledge of just how vital hunters are to the conservation of wildlife. Dan and Will discuss everything bear hunting and traveling internationally to hunt.

    Whitetail Landscapes - Summer Scouting for Big Bucks Jun 14, 2022

    In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Steve Sherk (Sherk’s Guide Service) discuss summer scouting for big bucks. Steve discusses the importance of summer scouting and Jon details food sources that attract deer. Jon identifies cover and food sources combined and the related benefits and usage. Steve explains the importance of areas that have heavy timber cuts and why he focuses on these locations.

    Steve explains his process of inventorying deer in the summer months and why he values this information. Jon identifies how some properties are more conducive to attracting deer in the summer months and how to make a property more attractive to deer throughout the summer and fall. Steve and Jon discuss the cover that is used by deer in the summer months. Both contributors explain specific considerations such as usage and accessibility, and how this information explains how deer value certain habitat.

    Steve explains where to put trail cameras, and how he creates interest at specific locations to help inventory deer. Steve explains options for scrapes and minerals and why these are important tools for surveying. Steve discusses how often he checks trail cameras and the importance of evaluating the trail camera data to understand more about deer and their landscape usage. Jon gets into his process for creating a positive environment for deer and how this technique can lead to a good outcome when you enter the property and the concerns some may have with disturbing deer.

    Steve and Jon talk about why they monitor certain areas in the summer months for deer usage. Further, monitoring tools such as cellular cameras are discussed in detail. Jon explains what will be discussed in the future and how both contributors have their eyes on certain bucks they plan on breaking down in future episodes.

    It all started 22 years ago when a film maker wanted to showcase a unique style of catching catfish by hand called Noodling. Out of that documentary came the Okie Noodling Tournament and festival in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma.     Mitchell has been doing land and crop consulting as an Agronomist with Rosetree Consulting in Southeast Pennsylvania. He not only helps growers maximize yield potential and profitability, but also translates farming practices into food plot practices. Mitchell taking a back seat on hunting trips from 4 years old until about 10 when he was able to start hunting. Although he started out by hunting anything and everything that was legal, as time went on Mitchell became passionate about chasing after whitetail deer with a bow. Mitchell has been a student of quality deer management and property manipulation for years as he grew up hunting on a 280 acre chunk of private land. On this episode Dan picks his brain about every possibility he has to maximize deer movement and encounters on his newly signed 10 acre lot in Missouri.
