    Nomadic Outdoorsman - Maine’s Grand Slam Sep 08, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Erin Merrill, an outdoorswoman, writer and one of the few people to ever accomplish Maine’s Grand Slam

Erin started hunting 20 years ago with her Dad. Since that time, they have spent countless hours in the woods stalking whitetails. In 2021, Erin was drawn for a moose tag and set the goal to get her Grand Slam - taking a turkey, bear, moose and deer within the same calendar year. She trapped her bear in early September, followed by an incredible moose hunt at the end of September into early October. Her grand slam was completed in early November after she shot a turkey and a 5 point buck.

Erin writes for the Northwoods Sporting Journal, is a Senior Writer for Drury Outdoors' DeerCast, is the Director of Business Operations for Blood Origins, sits on the board of the New England Outdoor Writers Association and is field staff for OnX and Fit to Hunt. Her blog, And a Strong Cup of Coffee, highlights her hunting adventures.

How to Hunt Deer - How to Hunt Early Season Bucks in the Morning with Mark Haslam Sep 08, 2022
    Show notes

Conventional whitetail wisdom espouses a few basic tenets for early season hunting: find where the deer bed, find where they eat, and don’t hunt mornings. While hunting mornings in the early season is very different than, say, November 5th, early season morning hunts can still be very productive. In this episode, guest Mark Haslam shares the strategies he’s used to kill mature bucks in the morning during the early season four years running, including his most recent South Carolina velvet brute.

Mark Haslam is a deer hunter and land manager from Georgia who spends most of his hunting time in South Carolina. Mark runs southeastwhitetail.com, hosts the Southeast Whitetail podcast, and writes for Wired to Hunt on Meateater. He was also named the 2020 National Deer Association Deer Manager of the Year hunts and manages his family farm in South Carolina. Mark knows his stuff, and his tactics for early season hunting can be effective no matter where you hunt.

Ohio Outdoors - OHLAP and Timber Ninja Sep 07, 2022
    Show notes

We are officially into the 2022-2023 hunting season! Last week we welcomed some small game seasons, doves, and some early waterfowl. This upcoming weekend is the opening of archery deer in the Disease surveillance areas of Hardin, Marion, and Wyandot counties. Paul was able to get out and knock down a couple doves this past week, but had little luck in the waterfowl blind. Andrew’s still prepping for the upcoming season and rehabbing his knee.

The show this week has 2 parts. To start we talk with Dave Kohler of the ODNR Division of Wildlife. Dave has been with the Department for many years and has a lot of knowledge. He shares with us the recap of the 2022 OHLAP program, as well as looking forward to the upcoming season.

After Dave, we have the chance to talk to Jason Redd of Timber Ninja. Timber Ninja is a company that specializes in high quality mobile hunting gear, but the show is more directed at Jason’s love of the outdoors, and some of the adventures he’s been on. Enjoy!

Antler Up - Rick Brule of Vapor Trail talks about his Upcoming Boundary Waters Hunt, Pope & Young Buck Stories, & Whitetail Calling Strategies Sep 07, 2022
    Show notes

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 137 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Rick Brule from Vapor Trail and Stokerized! Rick has been with Vapor Trail for over 10 years and he shares a little bit about himself and their companies. Rick talks about his upcoming Boundary Waters hunt and all the details regarding what he will be going after and when! We asked Ricke about his whitetail hunting situation for this upcoming season and it was really interesting to hear the way Rick hunts the metro Minnesota areas. Right after that Rick dives into two different Pope and Young buck stories! Then we wrap things up by talking about some whitetail calling strategies and experiences.

To start things off in the podcast Rick briefly introduces who he is and what his role is with Vapor Trail and Stokerized. Vapor Trail has been extremely busy this past year not only with products but with building their own pro shop in Minnesota! Rick shares some information regarding their shop and what people in the area can expect when they go there! From actually selling products, hanging out, 40 yard range and Techno Hunt! Rick follows this up by talking about his upcoming season which includes a 2 week canoe trip in the Boundary Waters! This is where he drew a limited bear tag but plans to fish, hunt whitetails and birds! Really interesting to hear how he plans on attacking this trip and makes you want to go for the ride! Following this conversation up we dove right into his two Pope & Young whitetail buck stories. Both stories happen during the middle of November and hearing how he was able to overcome a bad shot on the biggest buck yet to date. To finish off the episode Rick shares how his improved calling techniques has led to him getting more deer encounters and what he is doing. Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! Antler Up!

N.F.C. - Hunter Profile with Ryan Herman Sep 07, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with fellow bowhunter and police detective Ryan Herman about his passion for hunting big bucks. Ryan kicks off the episode by talking about his profession and discussing some of the similarities between his job and bowhunting. Ryan talks how he has learned to stay calm in the moment of truth, using hunting and all day sits as therapy, and the process he uses to gain access to properties where he feels a specific caliber of deer live. This is an awesome interview with a bowhunter who has not only evolved in his approach in deer hunting strategy, but the ability to locate big deer and put himself in position to hunt them every single year. Whitetail Landscapes - Wildflowers, Deer, and Design Sep 06, 2022
    Show notes

In this podcast Travis Harmon (Creative Habitat) and Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) discuss the importance of ecological diversity through considering pollinator plantings. Travis explains ideal locations to emplace wildflowers on the landscape. Travis details the observation and activities that occur around these locations and how attractive plantings can be for deer. Also, wildflowers can increase the number of insects and birds that prey on these insects, like turkeys.

Travis explains annual and perennial plants that should be considered and how attractant they are to deer. Jon details some cover crop options that work well to attract deer while removing pressure off wildflowers. Travis explains the intense interest of deer in sunflower planted areas, and a trick he uses to reduce deer browse. Both Travis and Jon explain the federal programs, and the potential benefits and what route they prefer to go with clients.

Travis explains more on-site selection, where to start and ideal conditions to establish pollinator plantings. Travis identifies the time required to establish plantings and the related long term and short-term stance on plant selection. Travis explains the ideal times to establish plantings and consider competing plants, especially cool season grasses. Travis details the minimum equipment he uses and how he has shied away from expensive tools like a no till drill. Travis suggested the benefits of transitioning from grass to wildflowers can be great to landowners and reduce workload.
