Southern Ground - Winter To Spring Deer Transition - Where Are They Right Now? Mar 16, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. As many of us start transitioning into the true off-season, we find that whitetails are transitioning in their daily habits and routines as well. This week, the guys discuss their thoughts on what deer are doing now as we roll out of winter and into spring. While we may not be able to hunt them right now, it pays off to know what they're doing. This change in pattern is very similar to what we find deer doing during the time of season where it's not quite pre-rut, but it's also not really "early season" anymore.

Ohio Outdoors - Reporting for duty Private Tick Dick aka Glen Reich Mar 15, 2023
    Show notes

You’re in for a treat this week! Shine your boots and report for duty as the guys sit down for a good talk with Glen (one N) Reich. Glen is a friend of the show that has helped the guys grow behind the scenes. But Glen has some pretty good stories to tell and one of them involves those hellacious demons we know as ticks. Glen relives his time in basic training as a private, in which he had an upclose encounter with a tick, on his private. Follow that?

Around the state there is a lot of fun spring activities in the works. Water safety council meetings, Geology days, Spring flowers, and Hatchery open houses. Paul will be on his way to Florida when the show releases for his first Osceola hunt. Navigating the swamps with gators, snakes, ticks, and more! Andrew is getting ready to head to Oklahoma in a couple weeks for some hog hunting, so gearing up for that, but not ready to go yet. Happy to announce a new partner to the program, Xvision optics. Check these guys out, and be on the look out for more content from this awesome optics company.

Make sure you guys check out our friends at GoWild, Midwest Gun Works, XVision optics, Half Rack, and First lite!

Have a great week and enjoy the O2 if you get out into Ohio’s great Outdoors!

Antler Up - Traditions, Planning Your Season & Half-Rack w/ Josh Dutton Mar 15, 2023
    Show notes

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 164 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Wisconsin native Josh Dutton. What an absolutely fun conversation that we had! Josh works for Half-Rack which makes some real fine gear for hunters. We only get into the gear a little bit at the end. Josh shared his hunting traditions with his family and you see the impact that it has had on who he is today.

Josh from a very young age knew he wanted to work within the hunting industry and mentions how Half-Rack started. Really cool story regarding that and then he follows this up by telling hunting stories! Josh maps out his typical year for planning for the next hunting season. From right now, figuring out what hunts he will get to come fall, to getting his property in good shape with land management and of course getting lots of time behind the bow.

We get into other hunting strategies, and stories throughout the podcast! I am really looking forward to having Josh on again in the future. Really enjoyed speaking with him and would like to dive deeper into some stories that helped him become successful in and out of the woods! Enjoy this fun episode!

Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!

Whitetail Landscapes - Soil Health Equals Bigger Deer Mar 14, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Albert Tomechko (Vitalize Seed) discuss the importance of soil health and an equation that will lead to bigger deer. Albert discusses the one-two system that they offer and why their seed strategy requires less inputs. Al discusses the most overlooked aspects of soil test, and why we need to think about certain seed mixes to optimize nutrient cycling. Al and Jon discuss the mistakes of putting too much seed down and related nutrient tie up we sometimes fail to consider.

Al discusses soil and plant synergies, and why balancing carbon to nitrogen ratios are so critical to the microbial communities in our soil. Jon and Al discuss the when, why, and how to get a soil sample, to include the depth, location and reducing variables. Jon discusses using a roller crimper and balancing seeding techniques. Al discusses where he goes to get soil samples and thinks about soil from a full spectrum perspective to include mineral balancing. Al and Jon discuss thinking through crop sequencing and thinking through the next crop (i.e. corn).

Al and Jon explain what is important to consider in the fall and why carbon building is meaningful. Al discusses options to terminate cover crops in the springtime (i.e. crimper, chopper, etc.) Al discusses when he uses a heavy legume mix and what happens when we become too clover focused. Al and Jon discuss cattle and deer browse. Jon explains simple techniques to assess your soil and how compacted soils can be detrimental to food plots. Jon discusses a simple method to evaluate seed quality and how better-quality soils and plants lead to less disease.
