Hound Dog Network - Gone To The Dogs – Talking Track Dogs with Steve and Corey Jul 09, 2024
    Show notes

Corey Gruver is back and he and Steve have the porch rockers humming like the treadle wheel on Grandma’s sewing machine as they talk about a wide assortment of topics this week.

Hot weather is abundant and so are summertime tales in this episode. Recent exploits of the boys Plott dogs as well as the announcement of the upcoming nuptials of Corey’s female Goldie to Bill Shininger’s stud dog are front and center. The talk moves to the latest accomplishments of Steve and Mark Miller’s Plott Fever in field and water events and progresses to the realm of deep-thinking about how to decide when and to which stud to breed with an admonition to owners of females “not to wait too long.”

With Autumn Oaks less than two months away, the boys share some of their favorite humorous stories from experiences at “The Event Where History Is Made.”

This one is jam-packed with good information concerning how to improve club membership, explores the dangers of a once-common practice of climbing trees and culminates with a very interesting conversation on the importance of track dogs in the sport. The boys discuss the all-important question “which is more important, the track dog or the tree dog?” If you don’t listen to anything else this week, check out this portion of the podcast. It’s good stuff!

Wisconsin Sportsman - Maximizing Your Trail Cams with Jacob Sklenar Jul 09, 2024
    Show notes

It's hot, it's humid, the mosquito swarms could carry you away, and that can only mean one thing... It's time to start hanging trail cameras! And who would be better to talk about trail cam strategies with than Jacob Sklenar? That's right, folks, Jacob is back again to drop even more knowledge to help you guys get off on the right track this deer season, and you might want to grab your notepad.

In this week's episode the guys share how their summers have been, and then dive right into strategy talk. Jacob breaks down why he uses trail cameras to answer a question he has, and how he goes about doing that. He shares areas he likes to hang cameras, when he likes to hang cameras, some subtleties he picks up about other hunters in an area and how they will shift deer movement, how he uses historic data about an area, reading tracks when the camera doesn't go off, and even a bit of speculation about technology in the woods. All that and more in this week's episode!

Oklahoma Outdoors - Preseason Gear Inventory Jul 08, 2024
    Show notes

This episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast is all about gear. John has three out of the ordinary hunts this year that all feature different states, terrains, weapons, and gear. John breaks these hunts down one by one and discusses the drastic differences in gear he will need for the different hunts. John will start off with an early season September muzzleloader hunt in Kansas. After doing a lot of map scouting, John learned that the area of Kansas he will be in is much more remote than he realized. This hunt will probably be a truck hunting scenario, something John has not done much of recently.

Back in Oklahoma, John drew a tag for a traditional archery only hunt which means he will need to polish his archery skills. After testing out an old recurve he had, he discovered a bent limb which makes the more powerful bow not an option. He now has to decide to stick with his 40 pound longbow, or drop some money on a new recurve. He also has to decide if he wants to stick to hunting on the ground or practice shooting a long traditional bow from a tree stand.

The last hunt of his season will take place in the cactus covered mountains of south Texas. Clothing is the main concern on this hunt. Being just off of the Rio Grande River and Mexican border, this area has some of the most unpredictable weather in the lower 48. Add long hikes mixed with hours of sitting and glassing, you just never know what you are going to end up needing to put on or take off in a moment's notice. All while possibly needing to take a 300 to 400 yard shot at any second.
