Chiefs say they’re doing all they can to keep COVID-19 at a distance Oct 07, 2020
    Show notes

Wednesday did not bring good news to the NFL when it came to COVID-19 testing. Patriots’ cornerback Stephon Gilmore received a positive test result on Tuesday, and so did an unidentified Raiders’ player. The added significance to that news: The Patriots just played the Chiefs and the Raiders are the next opponent.

No positive test results for Chiefs players, at least none reported. Practice team quarterback Jordan Ta’amu had a positive test last week. Chiefs coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes met with reporters on a zoom call Wednesday and the team is moving forward with preparation for Sunday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium.

Chiefs beat writer Sam McDowell joins SportsBeat KC host Blair Kerkhoff to discuss the latest developments and what Mahomes and Reid had to say on Wednesday.

Style points be darned. Chiefs will take any victory over shorthanded Patriots Oct 06, 2020
    Show notes

It wasn’t the most artistic of triumphs, but the Chiefs finished the job in defeating the New England Pariots 26-10 Monday night at Arrowhead Stadium. Their pass defense was excellent and made three interceptions, including Tyrann Mathieu’s return for a touchdown.

Yes, the Patriots had to go with backup quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham to replace Cam Newton, who had tested positive for COVID-19. But the Chiefs took advantage. It took a while for their offense to get going, but Patrick Mahomes flipped touchdown passes to Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman in the second half.

We cover it all on SportsBeat KC, The Star’s daily sports podcast, with Vahe Gregorian, Sam McDowell, Sam Mellinger, Herbie Teope and Pete Grathoff. The A-Team gathered to break down the action on SportsBeat Live, and it’s presented here in podcast form.

So did Chiefs backup quarterback Jordan Ta’amu.. Kickoff is 6:05 p.m.

But you’ll hear Chiefs today, specifically wide receiver Mecole Hardman. After a break, we’ll listen in on the postgame news conferences of Kansas State Coach Chris Klieman and Missouri Coach Eli Drinkwitz. The Wildcats defeated Texas Tech, overcoming a fourth-quarter deficit, and Mizzou fell at Tennessee.

Catch the A-Team after tonight’s game on SportsBeat Live, which will become the podcast on Tuesday morning.

Do Chiefs, NFL teams have letdowns? And 1st or worst car for A-Teamers Oct 01, 2020
    Show notes

Chiefs-Patriots matchups have produced some of the NFL’s most dramatic games over the past few years. Will that be the case again on Sunday?

The Star’s A-Team of Sam McDowell, Herbie Teope, Vahe Gregorian and Sam Mellinger break down Sunday’s game between the previous two Super Bowl champions on SportsBeat Live, presented here as a SportsBeat KC podcast.

For the only time this season, the Chiefs will be preparing on a short week, and they’ll be facing a former MVP quarterback for the second straight weekend: Cam Newton. Plus, this is a battle of coaching titans: Andy Reid vs. Bill Belichick. Also, could this be a letdown game for the Chiefs after their resounding triumph at Baltimore on Monday?

All that, plus the candy-corn topic of the week: first/worst car, in honor of Kansas Speedway maintaining two races for the 2021 schedule, which was announced Wednesday.

Matheny on Royals’ improvement for ’21, plus Mahomes on being a dad Sep 30, 2020
    Show notes

The baseball playoffs have started ... without the Royals. That means it’s time to wrap up the season. Manager Mike Matheny said the young starting pitching and bullpen improvement over last year were season highlights and knows the team has to get better offensively. The team’s success in the second half was partly due to the ability to get runners on and move them around. Matheny wants to see more of that next year.

After a break, you’ll hear from Patrick Mahomes, who reviewed the Monday victory over the Ravens, looked ahead to Sunday’s game against the Patriots and fielded a couple of questions about fatherhood.

One of Mahomes’ four touchdown passes against the Ravens was throwing to tackle Eric Fisher, and Fish gets the last word on SportsBeat KC today, describing the experience.

How the Chiefs beat the Ravens, let us discuss the ways Sep 29, 2020
    Show notes

The Kansas City Chiefs entered Monday’s game at the Baltimore Ravens as underdogs. After all, the Ravens had won 14 consecutive regular-season games and are led by reigning MVP Lamar Jackson.

But the Chiefs were the better-prepared team. Patrick Mahomes had one of his best days in a Chiefs uniform, the defense bottled up Jackson and the KC prevailed 34-20.

The Star’s A-team of Vahe Gregorian, Sam Mellinger, Herbie Teope and Sam McDowell, plus colleague Pete Grathoff and SportsBeat Live host Blair Kerkhoff, bring you this breakdown of all the action. Who besides Mahomes stood out? Why do the Ravens have so much trouble with the Chiefs, and did the outcome stamp Kansas City as the Super Bowl favorite?

How K-State stunned OU, and final word on Chiefs-Ravens from Kelce Sep 28, 2020
    Show notes

A funny thing happened to Oklahoma on its way to another blowout victory at home. Kansas State scored the game’s final 24 points and pulled off an upset of the third-ranked Sooners.

How did the Wildcats do it?

Beat writer Kellis Robinett, who covered the game in Norman, stops by The Star’s daily sports podcast, SportsBeat KC, to break down the first road victory by a K-State team over a top-three opponent with show host Blair Kerkhoff.

After a break, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce shares his thoughts about the team’s huge game Monday night at Baltimore. The Chiefs and Ravens appear to be the top teams in the AFC.

Baltimore is riding a 14-game regular-season winning streak and the Chiefs are Super Bowl champions. It’s not too early to think about how this game will influence playoff seeding this season.
