    437. Steve Gelbs, Sportnet New York (SNY) Jan 10, 2024

    Steve Gelbs has been the New York Mets on-field reporter for regional cable network SNY since 2015. In 2014, he took over for Kevin Burkhardt, in the 10 years since Gelbs became the studio host for SNY's New York Jets coverage. Two years ago, he began freelancing as a commentator on NHL Network. In this episode, the Syracuse alum talks about the 2014 season, where they met, and where Steve was introduced to the Mets broadcast. He also talks about the evolution of baseball over the decade on the field, and the recent rules changes in baseball. He also discussed the Jets 2023 season, and how the Aaron Rodgers injury was covered on TV. He also talked about working with the NHL; his passion is for the New York Rangers.


    436. The State of College Sports' NIL and Transfer Portal Jan 03, 2024

    The first episode of 2024 discusses College Athletics and the role Name, Image, and Likeness money is impacting athletes. While NIL has been in college sports since 2019, the changes to the transfer portal have been similarly consequential. In 2021, the NCAA changed transfer rules that eliminated an athlete from having to sit out a year when changing schools. David Kelley PhD, CAA is a Professor and Master's Program Coordinator of the Sport Administration Program at the University of Cincinnati. He recently attended the National High School Athletic Directors Conference where the subject was NIL and the Transfer Portal. Kelly is also a coordinator of the Cincinnati Public Schools first annual CPS All-Star Showcase. Proceeds from this event will go to CPS Project Connect, a program founded in 1996 that helps provide CPS students experiencing homelessness with backpacks, school supplies, uniforms, transportation, after-school tutoring, and more.     Like the 5 episodes before it, this show is exactly what the episode title says it is. Scott Seidenberg, now with Pre-Game.com, joins the show for a record-tying sixth time, tying LaTroy Hawkins and Eli Manning. The story behind this episode is that the show fell on Christmas six years ago, and was going to be skipped. That wouldn't work with a new sponsor, so Scott came to the rescue. The success of that episode (177) led to it being done again the next year. A new tradition was born. In this episode, Scott reflects on the year that was. They discuss sports and streaming, the impact of Taylor Swift, outdoor hockey games, and various other sports topics.     434. George Clooney and the cast/crew of "The Boys in the Boat" Dec 20, 2023

    Acclaimed actor and director George Clooney directed a new sports movie entitled “The Boys in the Boat,” which is being released in theaters on December 25th, 2023. The story is based on the 1936 United States Olympic Rowing team, which took gold in Berlin, Germany during the height of the Nazi regime. The story involves the University of Washington junior-varsity rowing team that qualified for the Olympics against all odds. Clooney appeared at a press junket for the film. Also appearing on the podcast are stars Joel Edgerton, who plays the coach Al Ulbrickson, and Callum Turner, who plays rower Joe Rantz. The episode also features a conversation with Terry O'Neill, an Olympic rowing coach who coached the team from Great Britain in the 1988, 1992, and 1996 Olympic Games, who was convinced by Clooney to teach the actors how to look like Olympic rowers.

    In March 2023, Steve Cohen left his position as the Senior Vice President of Sports Programming at Sirius/XM Radio. He recently created The Content Lab and is looking for new projects. He still advises Sirius/XM and hosts a Sunday show on the NFL Channel. Cohen was an early employee of WFAN-New York in the late 1980s/early 1990s before leaving to join Sirius Satellite Radio. In this episode, Cohen explains the thought process of walking away from his position. He also comments on the current state of Sports Programming at Sirius/XM and the company in general. He weighs in on the debate between live radio and podcasts. He also explains what he's looking for in his new venture.

    John Kincade is the morning show host on 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia and has been for the last 3 years. He recently faced his second bout with cancer, and after declaring on social media that he was cancer-free, he came back to the show. Kincade's first appearance was Episode 195. Before Philly, John hosted in Atlanta and nationally on both ESPN and CBS Radio. This episode is divided into 3 segments. First, John addresses his battle with cancer. Second, he talks about his radio show and the challenges that go with it. Finally, he answers questions about the sports teams in Philadelphia, his hometown teams. The Flyers, 76ers, Eagles, and Phillies are all covered.


    431. Patrick McEnroe Returns Nov 29, 2023

    Former Tennis player and current ESPN Tennis Broadcaster Patrick McEnroe returns to the podcast after a six-year absence. He previously came on Episode 59. Since then, he started his own podcast, “Holding Court.” As a player, McEnroe won one singles title and 16 doubles titles, including the 1989 French Open. His career-high rankings were world No. 28 in singles and world No. 3 in doubles. His younger brother is John McEnroe, a tennis legend. The McEnroe brothers have opened the John McEnroe Tennis Academy in many New York area locations. They are also embarking on a trip to Tanzania from December 1st-8th, 2023 to bring tennis to a part of the world that hasn't been exposed to the sport. In this episode, McEnroe discusses the current state of the sport of tennis and its surge in popularity. They discuss the potential for Carlos Alcaraz, the amazing staying power of Novak Djokovic, and the balance on the women's side. They talk about the growth of tournaments beyond the four major tournaments.


    430. Former Formula-1 Driver Jenson Button Nov 22, 2023

    In 2009, Jenson Button won the prestigious Formula-1 championship for the newly-branded Brawn GP team. The saga of that season has been the subject of a new documentary that recently premiered on Hulu called: Brawn: The Impossible F1 Story. Hosted and produced by actor Keanu Reaves, the story tracks the incredibly improbable 2009 season. Jenson Button won 6 of the first 7 races. Then, a controversy about his car surfaced. That was followed by a massive slump and economic problems. Button joined the show to recount that wild story. In this episode, Button discusses what he learned from seeing the documentary vs. what he knew during that year. He also discusses the various players in the film and his relationship with them. He also addressed the current surge in F1 popularity, and what a sports documentary can do for that sport. Also, Button addresses the differences in F1 racing now as opposed to 14 years ago.


    429. New Radio Voice of the Phoenix Suns Jon Bloom Nov 15, 2023

    Jon Bloom was recently named the new full-time 'Voice of the Suns' this 2023-24 season on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. He replaces the legendary Al McCoy, who retired after 51 seasons calling Suns' games. Bloom graduated from Syracuse University and began his career in Detroit. In 2003, he moved to Arizona, and in 2008, began working with the Suns in various roles. Bloom started doing Suns road games for McCoy dating as far back as the 2016-17 season. In this episode, Bloom talks about getting the job and replacing a Suns legend. He also discusses how his career really started at Syracuse, and the lasting legacy that had. He also discusses the NBA's new In-Season Tournament and the recent injuries that have hampered the Suns.

Laurent Courtines is the host of the “Squeaky Bum Time” podcast and has covered the EPL (English Premier League) and released over 200 episodes of his Premier League soccer-specific show over the last 3 years. In this episode, Courtines explains the origin of the EPL and the media deals that have evolved over the years. He explains the differences between soccer and other American sports, namely football and baseball. He also explains where Major League Soccer ranks on the global stage.
