    Spiritual Batteries

These recordings of guided prayer are efforts to grow in faith, hope, and love while personally contemplating Jesus in the Gospels. Following the example of St. Josemaría Escrivá, I hope to provide considerations that might help as a person tries to pray on their own.

Intro: "If you only knew the gift of God" Nov 26, 2017

To begin this weekend retreat, we consider various goals, using Jesus' words to the woman at the well as our theme.

With Thomas, Contemplating Jesus' Wounds Nov 17, 2017
    Show notes

In order to believe that someone loves us, we all look for "proof": actions that confirm what they say. After the Resurrection, Jesus wanted to preserve the wounds of his crucifixion. He wanted there to be visible, physical proof of his love without limits. To renew our belief in that love, we do well to join Thomas in contemplating them and in touching them.

Contemplating Jesus' Healing of the Man with a Withered Hand Nov 15, 2017
    Show notes

Today we pray about an aspect of Jesus' personality that we might often avoid, perhaps out of fear: his reactions of anger. However, we must take the entire portrait of Jesus that we find in the Gospels. If we do, we will find that his anger is unique. In fact, it is another expression of his love.

Praying with Lazarus, Martha, and Mary Nov 11, 2017
    Show notes

Considering Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, we try to discover specific ways in which our friendship with Jesus can become more sincere and personal.

Confiding in God's Great Gift: Parable of the Talents Nov 08, 2017
    Show notes

Our prayer today centres on the parable of the talents. We try to contemplate the great confidence that God has in us, and how this is expressed in the baptismal vocation that he entrusts us with, encouraging us to make it grow and multiply.

Purified by Hope Nov 01, 2017
    Show notes

We pray with some words of St. John, where he gives us a solid foundation for hope: hope in the unique dignity that God has given to us by creating us male and female. This hope, he says, purifies us. So we try to pray about how holy purity is nurtured by hope, whereas lust is a kind of despair.

Jesus Liberating Us in our Work Oct 21, 2017
    Show notes

In this meditation, we contemplate Jesus' own interior freedom and how, through grace and baptism, he wants us to work with that same freedom. In other words, to work with the freedom of people who love Jesus and are therefore free, no matter the circumstances.

Praying about Enjoying God's grace Oct 18, 2017
    Show notes

We consider the rich young man's dissatisfaction with doing good deeds so as to pray about how God wants us to "enjoy" the Christian life he calls us to. Also, the example of the Prodigal Son's older brother shows how an inability to enjoy God's mercy separates us from him, and from the true Christian life that we are called to live.
