COVID-19 brings a halt to sports in America.

This gives us an opportunity to pull together and sacrifice for each other.

Why the NFLPA made the right decision to ratify the new CBA.

There will now be seven playoff teams per-conference, hence only one bye on each side of the playoff bracket.

    A 17-game regular season arrives in 2021.

It's impossible with 17 games to split the schedule evenly home and road. There are several options on how that can be handled, including one that plays the 17 extra games league-wide in foreign markets or domestic markets without current teams.

Gene Smith held a conference call Friday to outline measures Ohio State is taking to prevent a COVID-19 outbreak and what that means for the athletic department.

OSU athletes, and all students, must be out of the dorms next week.

Athletic facilities are closed by order of the Big Ten until April 6.

Ohio State hasn't cancelled the remainder of spring practice yet, but that seems inevitable.

Smith says he is in favor of an extra year of eligibility for both spring sports athletes, who have had their seasons wiped out, and winter sports athletes who did not get to compete for a championship.

S1E101 - Corona concerns/cancellations; Should seniors get extra eligibility?; Impact on OSU football; Let's pull together Mar 13, 2020

The latest edition of the Spielman and Hooley podcast includes discussion about how the NCAA should react to the cancellation of spring sports going forward, what areas of OSU's football development are most impacted by the COVID-19 precautions and whether the Buckeyes are better-positioned than other schools to handle the consequences.

    TODAY

Coronavirus concerns result in the cancellation of the NCAA Basketball Tournament and all spring sports.

Personalizing the end of the college basketball season and the spring sports season puts some possible solutions on the table for consideration.

The NCAA would have to allow special exemptions for schools to carry extra scholarship players next season.

Not every player would want the extra year's eligibility that might be extended.

Evaluating the COVID-19 adjustments in a year or two will perhaps result in some dramatic changes to college sports.

One of the things that could come from this is the elimination of spring football.

OSU has 15 early enrollees who sacrificed the end of their senior years in high school to play spring football. Is that something that could be eliminated in the future?

The Browns issue an edict that has a Big Brother feel to it.

Television networks suddenly have gigantic programming blocks to fill.

Ohio State loses at Michigan State on Senior Day for the Spartans.

Cassius Winston played one of his best games ever and Kaleb Wesson, uh, did not.

What happens to Wesson when he struggles like this?

OSU gets Purdue at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Round One of the Big Ten Tournament. A win advances the Buckeyes to play Michigan State on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Bruce said on Friday that the ideal Big Ten Tournanament scenario was an opening-round win and then a second-round loss so the team could be fully rested for the NCAA Tournament. Now that a second shot at MSU looms, does he still feel that way?

Mr. Spielman said this should happen and now it has.

Was it the original mistake or the double-down that sealed the fate of this reporter?

Kaleb Wesson might be playing his final season for OSU. Is he ready for the NBA? Would he get drafted? Would returning to school and playing for the Buckeyes as a senior make any difference in his basketball future?

Emailers weigh in on the ideal scenario for the Buckeyes at the Big Ten Tournament and the game-ops at Value City Arena.

Like the Apostle Paul said, "As much as is possible, live at peace with others."

Ohio State's course correction continues with a ninth win in 11 games at the expense of Illinois' Big Ten title hopes.

E.J. Liddell comes off the Buckeyes' short bench and plays very big for the Buckeyes.

Senior Night offers Danny Hummer his first start. If you didn't know it, Danny was a baller back in his Upper Arlington High School days.

Kofi Cockburn of Illinois is the largest human being Bruce has ever laid eyes on. Lovie Smith might want to check him out as a tight end or defensive end.

Yes, Mr. Spielman, the Dispatch is still in business.

Speaking of big men, OSU's Kaleb Wesson is channeling his inner bully and playing great when needed.

We need emailers to settle an argument about whether it would be good for Ohio State to win the Big Ten Tournament or lose in its second game and get the weekend to rest for the NCAA Tournament.

C.J. Walker sensed an opportunity with D.J. Carton's departure and Walker has delivered in a big way.

What a treat to hear from Jerry Lucas and other members of OSU's 1960 NCAA Championship team.

A possible clarification on Master Teague's injury.

There is a reason why Ohio State, and other schools, aren't forthcoming with the details on player injuries.

Mr. Spielman's former academic advisor at OSU says the big man did not get to major in the subject he preferred.

Al Michaels may get traded from NBC to ESPN. Al has already been traded once before, and what ABC received in return may surprise you.

Peyton Manning could trump Tony Romo's $18 million annual contract to broadcast football. Will this salary escalation among analysts filter down to the Spielman level?

An emailer makes us laugh repeatedly with references to previous issues raised on the podcast.

Another emailer affirms the effort to be more civil on Twitter.

We check Bruce's Timeline to see how he's doing and gauge whether he went over the line in a Tweet disclosing the error that often courses through the national media coverage of the issues of the day.

Some encouragement amid depression and despair.

Just as Bruce wrote about Master Teague taking over for J.K. Dobbins, and a day after asking Ryan Day about him, OSU's sophomore running back suffers an injury that will keep him out all of spring football and perhaps in the fall.

Who is left at running back for spring and how might the depth chart look in the fall?

Demario McCall worked at wide receiver on Monday, but he's probably moving back to running back.

How many teams on OSU's schedule are good enough to beat the Buckeyes if they are only average at running back?

The Arnold's Fitness Expo is cancelled because of concerns over the Coronavirus spreading to Columbus among the 200,000 visitors who typically attend the event downtown.

There will be no crowds allowed at the Arnold competition in Columbus. Are we headed for similar restraints on attendance at the NCAA Tournament?

Spiels goes home to Massillon and takes to Instagram with a landmark from his past.

    Do dads remember their youth?

Dwayne Haskins is in the spotlight as rumors surface that Washington might be looking at Tua No. 2 in the draft.

Should the Bengals take Haskins and the No. 2 pick in exchange for the No. 1 overall?

OSU defeats Michigan, 77-63, to continue an amazing stretch of success in the rough-and-tumble Big Ten.

3:00 -- Buckeyes get it done despite Kaleb Wesson struggling from inside the arc. Duane Washington delivers them from danger early. Andre Wesson comes up big at the end and C.J. Walker was solid throughout. Oh, and don't forget Luther Muhammad.

5:00 -- Would it be a good or bad thing if OSU wins the Big Ten Tournament?

6:00 -- It will be a show on Thursday when the Buckeyes finish the season at home and some greats from the past return, including Jerry Lucas and Bob Knight.

7:00 -- While celebrating Ohio State's 8-2 record over its last 10 games, it's probably only fair to recognize that Chris Holtmann has answered his critics questions about whether he's the right man for the job.

15:00 J.K. Dobbins' nagging injuries keep him from running or working out at the NFL Scouting Combine.

22:00 Joe Burrow wants the Bengals to Franchise Tag A.J. Green.

23:00 -- If Tua's hip checks out medically, should the Bengals take a look at him instead of Burrow, given how Burrow has been chilly toward playing in Cincinnati?

    24:00 Andy Dalton's possible destinations.

25:00 Shoutout to Michigan Man Rich Eisen for doing a nice thing for charity.

26:00 Henry Ruggs and others flash some serious athleticism at the Combine.

3:30 Duane Washington gets OSU started on the right foot and the Buckeyes cruise from there in an easy win at Nebraska.

5:00 Kaleb Wesson's career-high 18 rebounds is hopefully a hint of things to come down the stretch.

The transition Washington has made from one type of guard to another is not easy to accomplish.

10:20 Spiels reflects on one of the most difficult phone calls a father can receive.

14:00 The crescendo is getting louder as OSU's Chris Holtmann claps back again at Maryland's Mark Turgeon.

ESPN analyst Robbie Hummel joins the fray and may merit status as an honorary Buckeye.

22:00 Chase Young says he is the best player in the draft, but where does Mr. Spielman put him in the pecking order with the Bosa brothers?

30:00 J.K. Dobbins is in the running for best running back in the draft, but will he run on Friday with a couple of nagging injuries?

34:00 Who are the other running backs likely to compete with Dobbins as first running back off the board?

K.J. Hill runs a slow time, but there's still time to make up for that.

41:00 Ohio State increases Ryan Day's buyout, but there's no wisdom in raising it so high he's held prisoner if he really wants to try the NFL.

Ohio State extends Ryan Day's contract by three years and hikes his pay well over $6 million.

What is the reason for OSU to do this with four years remaining on Day's original contract?

Will this make any difference in keeping NFL teams away from Day?

Does Day now make more than most NFL coaches?

Speaking of money, there's a lot more of it available to NFL players if they ratify the new Collective Bargaining Agreement the owners have proposed.

Seventeen games will become the norm for 10 years if the deal gets OK'd.

This will give NFL players the biggest piece of the revenue pie of any major sports league.

We remember a "fussbudget" from Spielman's OSU days.

Joe Burrow does damage control on his passive-aggressive treatment of the Bengals in advance of the NFL Scouting Combine.

Should the Bengals take a trade with Carolina if it offered three No. 1 picks for Burrow?

Spiels might be getting to do preseason games with Tua Tagovailoa in Detroit.

Tony Grossi gets suspended from ESPN Cleveland for a comment about Baker Mayfield.

    Today:

Luther Muhammad comes up big for OSU in a seven-point win over the nation's No. 7 team.

Muhammad's success wasn't restricted to the offensive end. He also had a great game defensively on Maryland's leading scorer, Anthony Cowan.

Kaleb Wesson didn't play well at Iowa, and faced the threat of additional embarrassment from Maryland's Jalen Smith. This time, the OSU big man delivered.

Wesson's defense was a little too physical for the liking of Maryland coach Mark Turgeon.

Not surprisingly, OSU's Chris Holtmann didn't endorse Turgeon's view of things.

Turgeon would be using Wesson exactly like Holtmann is using Wesson if Maryland had a big man whose skills mirrored Wesson's.

Kyle Young's injury has been diagnosed as a high ankle sprain. Maybe OSU will get lucky and it will be a low ankle sprain that allows him to play Sunday against Mcihigan.

The Wolverines are 9-7 in the Big Ten, and thus two games up on Ohio State entering the final two weeks of the season.

Duane Washington's emergence as a dribble-drive threat has been a welcome addition to the offense.

Holtmann predicted that Muhammad would win a game for the Buckeyes with his offense. But in so doing, the coach might have torched a sponsorship from a corporate partner.

Cardale Jones lost his first game since high school with the DC Defenders' 39-9 defeat in Los Angeles. Jones threw four interceptions.

The faith portion of the podcast may expand in coming months once spring football and the NFL Draft are over.

Answered prayer demonstrates how much God is invested in the smallest details of our lives.
