Space the Nation — Arts
Space the Nation

On Space the Nation, we take our love of science fiction (and fantasy and horror) and smash it together with our professional passions: international relations (as brought to the table by Tufts University professor and Washington Post columnist Dan Drezner) and cultural criticism (as brought to the table by political columnist Ana Marie Cox). It’s a highly informed but hilarious conversation that starts with an examination of a particular text (everything from Ursula K. LeGuin to the MCU, Star Trek to Colson Whitehead) and veers into current events, mental health practices and imagined conversations between Ted Cruz and the Predator. For people who like white papers and graphic novels, Chapo Trap House and what Political Science Twitter used to be.

S3E25: JUPITER ASCENDING Jul 03, 2023

Show notes

Ana and Dan don their flying rollerblades and save some galactic royalty that happens to be dropping from the sky. This is not a good movie; it's not a good bad movie; it's in the uncanny valley between. It's a project where everyone gave 110 percent and a project where no one knew what they were giving 110 percent to. Except Eddie Redmayne. Eddie Redmayne is perfect. There is IR in this movie.

S3E24: ANNALEE NEWITZ & THE TERRAFORMERS Jun 26, 2023

Show notes

Ana and Dan have way more questions about robot sex than you probably imagined. I mean, I don't know what you imagine, but we had a lot of questions! Annalee Newitz came by and graciously satisfied our curiosity about R4R (and cat4train) hook-ups, as well as our questions about urban planning and very, very, very late-stage capitalism, all as depicted in their latest novel, The Terraformers. There is IR in this interview.

S3E23: NIMONA Jun 22, 2023

Show notes

Ana and Dan shapeshift into podcasters who occasionally release episodes on time, but not this time. Apologies for the delay, it is mostly Dan's fault (guess who writes these descriptions!). This week, beloved queer fantasy graphic novel, Nimona, a whimsical tale of a magical girl that is also a bleak examination of the violence bred of marginalization. Enjoy! There is IR in this book.

S3E22: YELLOWJACKETS: S2 E5-9 Jun 12, 2023

Show notes

Ana and Dan sit down and let the wilderness decide: Was the second season of Yellowjackets a gruesome exploration of the limits of belief, or was it a vicious deconstruction of gender ideals? The highs were high (all hail Melanie Lynskey!), and the lows were low (Walter will fix everything!); they kept us guessing about the exact nature of the supernatural element, and the one-liners punctuated the most intense interpersonal drama we've seen since Ana went to summer camp. There is IR in this series.

S3E21: CANON FODDER: NEUROMANCER Jun 04, 2023

Show notes

Ana and Dan jack in and try to break through the ICE (insane cultural extrapolation) around this neo-noir heist novel, maybe you've heard of it? SPOILER ALERT: It is as good as you remember and as everyone says. There is IR in this story.

S3E20: SILO (E1-4) WITH BONUS ENCORE: ENDER'S GAME May 29, 2023

Show notes

Ana and Dan think something is going on at that silo. We dive into the problem of genre-savviness, the "freeconomy" of the future, and how we would like to see more of Will Patton everywhere. Also, an encore presentation of Ender's Game is going up, as a treat. There is IR in this tv series and a sneaky critique of capitalism.

ENCORE: ENDER'S GAME May 29, 2023

Show notes

There's something up at that military academy for kids. One of our first Canon Foder episodes! Enjoy!

S3S19: STAR TREK TOS/STRANGE NEW WORLDS CROSSOVER May 21, 2023

Show notes

Ana and Dan put their redshirts on and join the crew of the Starship Enterprise for this time-hopping remix of an original series favorite and Paramount's sassy prequel. The TOS submariner plot holds up nicely; Kirk's random yeoman-cuddling does not. Strange New Worlds delivers a cautionary message about excessive caution and Anson Mount's hair continues to amaze. There is IR in these episodes.

S3E18: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. III May 15, 2023

Show notes

Ana and Dan agree that Cosmo is a good dog. The final (?) entry in the Guardians saga manages to be both the most emotionally affecting of the bunch and somehow the most forgettable. Discussed: Can we give Bradley Cooper a voice Oscar? Is the High Evolutionary a good executive? IS THERE A GOD?

BAYPRIL/MAY 2023 AUA May 09, 2023

It's an intimate AUA this month, but all the more spicy for it.
