From The Vault: Secrets of Sauerkraut Cave and Lakeland Asylum Aug 10, 2026

Show notes

Tucked behind the archery range at Louisville's E.P. Tom Sawyer Park lies a dark history that most visitors never notice: the forbidden entrance to Sauerkraut Cave and the grim footprint of the former Lakeland Asylum for the Insane. Long before thousands of forgotten patients were buried on these grounds—and long before the asylum's history was marred by fatal abuse, crude lobotomies, and rumored clandestine births hidden deep underground—the land was stained by the 18th-century killing of settler Isaac Height. Today, despite strict trespassing laws and heavy surveillance, the cave remains a magnet for urban legends, ghostly encounters, and eerie personal coincidences, serving as a sobering reminder of the suffering, tragic escapes, and lingering spirits buried just beneath the surface of a popular park.

Who is Mothman? Aug 07, 2026

Show notes

Today Allen is traveling to the riverbanks of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, to unravel one of the most thoroughly documented and terrifying mysteries in American folklore: the legend of the Mothman. Beginning in November 1966—when gravediggers and young couples encountered a seven-foot-tall, winged figure with glowing red eyes that could keep pace with a car at a hundred miles per hour—we trace the thirteen-month panic centered around the eerie, abandoned World War II TNT plant. From high-speed chases and terrifying shrieks to the mysterious Men in Black, we examine the strange events that haunted the town right up until the catastrophic collapse of the Silver Bridge on December 15, 1967, which took forty-six lives. Did a terrifying monster stalk the Appalachian hills, or was this mysterious entity a tragic omen appearing to warn a community before disaster struck.

The Man They Couldn't Hang Aug 05, 2026

Show notes

Today we are going back to Devon, England, in 1885 for one of the most astonishing moments in criminal history: the execution of John "Babbacombe" Lee. Convicted on thin circumstantial evidence for the gruesome murder of an elderly heiress, Lee was led to the scaffold where executioners tried—and failed—to hang him three separate times, only for the trapdoor to mysteriously jam every single time he stood upon it. Did a fatal mechanical glitch save a guilty killer, or did divine intervention step in to spare an innocent man from the gallows? We peel back the sensational newspaper headlines and Victorian lore to examine the bizarre trial, the impossible scaffold failure, and the lingering mystery of the man history declared unbeatable by death itself.

The Legend of the Westmoreland White Thing Aug 04, 2026

Show notes

Today on Tennessee Tales Tuesday, we are going down the winding backroads of Sumner County, to explore one of the region’s most chilling cryptid legends: the Westmoreland White Thing. Traced back to a catastrophic 1940s circus train derailment along the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, this ghostly, razor-clawed creature supposedly escaped its cage and vanished into the dense forests and limestone cave systems bordering Kentucky. From mutilated livestock and unsettling mimicry of a crying infant to an ear-splitting, unnatural scream that still freezes locals in their tracks, we peel back decades of mountain folklore, family warnings, and eyewitness encounters to uncover what might still be lurking just beyond the tree line.

Summoning the Dead in the White House Jul 29, 2026

Show notes

Southern Ghost Stories takes you inside a chaotic 1926 congressional hearing where an undercover investigator for Harry Houdini dropped a political bombshell: secret, table-tipping séances were allegedly being held inside Calvin Coolidge's White House. While the administration dismissed the rumors as total nonsense, the public couldn't ignore the chilling parallel to Abraham Lincoln—another president trapped in a dark executive mansion, desperately trying to use the Spiritualist movement to reach a teenage son taken too soon. We bypass the generic campfire tropes to trace the raw, unfiltered evidence behind Washington's most sensational supernatural conspiracy and the legendary magician who died trying to expose it.
