Ep. 33: The Disappearance of Michael Akey, Ridgeville Whale Bones, & Ghost Island Sep 14, 2026

June 24th, 1972. Fourteen-year-old Michael Steven Akey was near Burton, South Carolina when he got into a car. And then he disappeared. For nearly six years, there was no answer. No goodbye. No explanation. Then on a quiet stretch of Lady’s Island, human remains were discovered. Decades would pass. Technology would change. And eventually, science would put a name to those remains…Michael Akey. But identifying Michael was only the beginning because the person who drove away with him was never identified.

Also, scientists uncovered the fossilized bones of a whale that lived here roughly 24 million years ago near Ridgeville. What was a whale doing in South Carolina?

Plus, out on the dark waters of Lake Hartwell sits a tiny piece of land with a chilling history. A forgotten cemetery surrounded by water and a place locals have come to call Ghost Island. But are the stories of spirits here just legends or is something still lingering among those graves?

The beautifully crafted Abbeville Opera House in the Upstate has been the home for many shows and performances since its opening in 1908. But according to many witnesses, some its ghosts seem to stick around for one final performance. Also, in a world full of true crime content, we all seem to know at least a little bit of trivia when it comes to serial killers. One of these killers seems to fly under the radar for the most part, but Junior Pierce was nothing short of a monster. And later, we’ve got a double-dose of haunted theaters in this episode. That is, until they spot a UFO hovering above them.

We’re looking into the abandoned theme park in Fort Mill whose eerie remnants can still be seen to this day. Then, a story that's been spinning for decades in South Carolina involves the ghost of a hound that chases people, cars, or anything it encounters on a five-mile section of Old Buncombe Road as it runs through parts of Union County in South Carolina. And later: in 1983, Steven King gave us a chilling tale about a haunted car with his classic book Christine. To most, the concept of a possessed vehicle seems farfetched and fitting for a horror novel. But for one native in Cherokee County, it seems that truth is stranger than fiction.

It’s a running theme on this show: Charleston is chock full of haunted hotels. We can add The Francis Marion Hotel to that list, as it is said to be haunted by a man who took his own life after being rejected by his lover. What started out as a spring break trip to Myrtle Beach turned into a missing person investigation of teenage girl from Rochester, NY. It would be over a decade before the family of Brittanee Drexel would finally get some answers. A crime solved and a killer sentenced, all because he finally confessed. Then, by day, Poinsett Bridge — one of the oldest bridges in the whole state of South Carolina — offers a quiet, remote setting amidst the mountains of northern Greenville County for relaxing and exploring. But by night, the bridge becomes the site of seemingly unexplainable paranormal activity. And later, we’ve had our fair share of cryptids and urban legends in this state, such as the Hound of Goshen and The Lizard Man. But can we now add Bigfoot to that list?

Ep. 13: Bingham's Light, The Gaffney Strangler, and The Tragic Story of Julia Legare May 17, 2023

Since beginning this podcast, I’ve received a few messages regarding a well-known ghostly phenomena know as Bingham’s Light. There are countless articles and videos that I came across, but none more fascinating and eerie than that of a blog post by a user on YourGhostStories.com detailing his own personal experience visiting the light. Also, most folks are familiar with South Carolina’s most famous serial killer Pee Wee Gaskins, but did you know that another terrifying figure went on a murder spree in the Upstate? And later, in the mid 1800’s, it wasn’t uncommon for young children to come down with awful fevers, slip into comas, and sadly, pass away as a result. When you think about those that were declared dead, but then buried alive, it makes it all the more devastating. And for one unfortunate child, her spirit seems to still attempt her escape.

Ep. 12: Alice Flagg, Fort Fremont, and The 1837 Bed ‘n Breakfast Apr 01, 2023

In a classic case of forbidden love, Alice Flagg, a Pawleys Island plantation princess, fell in love with a lumber man by the name of John Braddock. At the hand of of her brother Allard, Alice’s fairly tale romance would never come to be, as she would die of what most would call a broken heart. But to this day, you can still visit her grave where some have witnessed strange happenings. Could the longing for her lost love still be seen from beyond the grave? Plus, Civil War ghost stories are popular among those who consider themselves history buffs and paranormal enthusiasts. But what is it about Fort Fremont that makes it so spooky if it was never home to any battles? Also, The 1837 Bed and Breakfast has been a prime example of Charlestons beautiful architecture and top-notch lodging for those looking to get away. But don’t be surprised if you end up having an extra roommate during your stay.

Ep. 11: The Disturbing Story of Susan Smith & Urban Legends of South Carolina Feb 11, 2023

Union County was rocked by the news of two missing children back in 1994. The story would continue to shock the state of South Carolina and the rest of the country when it was announced that their own mother was being arrested for their murder. Susan Smith became infamous as her story continued to fall apart. She rolled her car into John D. Long Lake with her two children strapped inside. According to authorities, this was a result of extramarital affair with a man who didn’t want children.
