EP 2-13 Looking Forward – Looking Back Jan 20, 2017

For the start of a new year, we’re leading off with a look back at the last, as we hear from trail correspondent Hey Girl and special guest Sphagnum PI. We follow along on the crazy ride from the night before the finish of the Appalachian Trail to a few months later. Episode 28 – This Is Why We Do It Feb 16, 2016

IMPORTANT: If you are an Appalachian Trail Class of 2016 hiker (thru-, section, or otherwise), please listen right away! We need your help!

As we get ready for thru-hiking season, we take a minute to remember why we want to do this. In this episode we hear from special guest Wired as she tells us what she has gotten out of thru-hiking and what about it has motivated her to keep hiking (over 10,000 miles by foot and counting).

Then we get to hear from our friends at the Dirtbag Diaries, as they share with us the story of a hiker named Paul, and why they need our help.

Episode 27 – An Everyday Commitment Feb 11, 2016

One guy, with one goal – to ski 2.5 million vertical feet in one year. That is, 2.5 million feet UPHILL. To make this happen, Aaron Rice is planning on skiing 10 hours a day, every day, for an entire year. Kimchi sits down with Aaron and his friend Joey Campanelli to talk about what it takes to do something like this, and why skiing uphill every day for 10 hours a day is something that anybody would even want to do.

Episode 23 – End of A Season Nov 03, 2015

It’s the end of A season, but it’s not quite the end of THE season, at least not for a few hardy hikers or for Sounds of the Trail. Not many northbounders are still braving the mountain passes, but we ran into a few still heading for Maine. Special guests Smokey Bear, Homegrown, and Bailey the dog.

Sounds of the Trail is back after a short hiatus. We’re in the process of transitioning to an off-trail broadcast, and figuring out what that’s going to look like. We have some good stuff lined up so be sure to tune in.

Episode 22 – Making It Happen Oct 01, 2015

Thru-hikes are a hugely physical undertaking that take a lot of time and a lot of money – or at least the ability to forego earning money. A lot of people ask – how do you make a thru-hike happen? We have no magical secrets to share – but we do have some thru-hikers share stories about their own journeys on the Appalachian Trail. Young, old, and in-between, the trail is for everybody. Special guests Spicy Guy, Bluebird, Hakuna Matata, and Sock Ninja. We delve dangerously close to “overly inspirational” territory in this podcast, but I don’t care. You need to listen to this.

To walk through it, or get off trail? Our correspondents struggle with injuries, changes in plan, and aches and pains.What’s the best way to take care of yourself on the trail?

In this podcast we discuss the hard business of thru-hiking, and the wear and tear on our bodies as a result. Injuries are incredibly common. According to a survey by distancehiking.com, 60% of thru-hikers report having been injured on trail. Although, if they are defining an injury as: “an injury, or more than a few days of aches and pains”, this rate seems a little low.

Episode 04 – What’s in a Name May 15, 2015

Trail names – are they the symbol of a new identity, a silly nickname, or a waste of time? We ask a bunch of hikers – and ourselves – and come to no consensus. For myself, I think that the name you call yourself can be very powerful, but the same way that you must Hike your own Hike, you must Name your own Name.

In addition to trail names, we get some trail updates from Kimchi and Saina. Check out the links to their blogs on the right sidebar if you’re looking for more stories from them. We end our episode with an interview with Max Heap, who has beautiful things to say about the trail, but neglects to tell us where his trail name came from.

Episode 03 – My Feet Hurt May 08, 2015

Episode 02 - Milestones and Beginnings May 01, 2015

In our second episode we get to hear from Saina, who has passed mile 100 on the Pacific Crest Trail! Kimchi has officially started the Appalachian Trail, starting at Springer Mountain in Georgia – we’re looking forward to hearing from her next week. Guest appearances by a bunch of new thru-hikers who I had the opportunity to chat with at the Annual Day Zero Pacific Crest Trail Kickoff in Lake Morena, CA.
