DAVID BARONI: Flowing in the Spirit Dec 30, 2017
    Show notes

David Baroni is one of those rare gifts to the Body of Christ as a songwriter, worship leader, and teacher. One of his early CCM hits "Soldiers of the Light" (Andrus, Blackwood, and Company) helped blaze the trail of pop Christian music. With over 200 songs on CCLI (and counting), his impact on the field of worship is perhaps crowned with the modern hymn "O Mighty Cross" (Baroni/Chisum), as well as dozens of songs recorded by Integrity Music and his own Kingdomsongs Music.

In this episode, David and John Chisum sit down at the keyboard to talk about "flowing in the Spirit" as a songwriter and even demonstrate an impromptu co-write during the show. David's encouraging heart and insights will refresh and inspire you in your own songwriting to new levels of trust and "flowing."

You can reach David at david@davidbaroni.com and follow him on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube.

BRANDON HEATH: Songwriting & Music Business Reform Dec 23, 2017
    Show notes

If Brandon Heath could offer a word of advice about how to navigate a well-lived life, he would sum it up in three words: faith, hope and love. These tenants of the Christian faith have provided an unshakable foundation for his own journey with Jesus through the years, and they continue to be the three virtues he claims in times of both joy and struggle. For Heath, it's simply "instruction for a good life." This trifecta of wisdom converges on his sixth studio project, Faith Hope Love Repeat (Provident Label Group), an album that fuses his signature pop sensibilities with his storytelling gifts.

A Nashville native, Heath quickly won the hearts of listeners when he released his major label debut in 2006. With four No.1 singles to his credit, including the RIAA Platinum-certified "Give Me Your Eyes," the singer has garnered five GRAMMY® nominations, an American Music Award nod and an Emmy Award. In addition, he's earned eight Dove Awards, including two consecutive Male Vocalist honors (2009, 2010) and a win for Song of the Year ("Give Me Your Eyes"). He's also been recognized as a top lyricist in his field with numerous songwriting accolades, including being named BMI's 2014 Songwriter of the Year.

Despite all the success and accolades for his music, Brandan is down-to-earth, grounded, and authentic. He and his wife are expecting their first child soon and this new season influenced much of the content on Heath's 2017 release, Faith Hope Love Repeat. John Chisum unpacks a little of the reality of the music business, songwriting, and life in this episode with CCM Artist, Brandan Heath.

DAN DEAN: 25 Years with CCM Supergroup Phillips, Craig, and Dean Dec 16, 2017
    Show notes

Few songwriters cultivate more fertile creative soil when crafting a new album than Phillips, Craig, and Dean. Juggling dual vocations as both pastors and recording artists for more than two decades, Randy Phillips, Shawn Craig, and Dan Dean have created an impressive body of work inspired by what God is doing in their lives and their respective churches. Transparency, passion and integrity have long been the foundation for Phillips, Craig, and Dean's music and ministry. For more than two decades, the trio has churned out some of Christian music's most enduring hits, including "Revelation Song," which recently earned RIAA Gold Single status, signifying downloads of more than 500,000. This is only the seventh time in the history of Christian music that a single has reached gold status. The song spent 17 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Christian AC chart and also topped the National Christian Audience chart, AC Indicator chart and Soft AC charts. On this episode, John Chisum sits down with PCD's Dan Dean to recall the group's beginnings in 1991at Star Song Records and to walk through highlights of the group's fantastic 25-year run. Dan shares some great stories, his songwriting process, and some valuable songwriting advice to aspiring writers. JOHN CHISUM: Why the World Needs One More Christmas Song Dec 09, 2017
    Show notes

Ahhhh, the sounds of Christmas…. the ubiquitous Salvation Army Santa outside of Walmarts and Best Buys with that annoying little bell clanging till you give him a buck just to make him stop, but he never does...

The bustle of shoppers and imaginary tinkling of Silver Bells, the very real laughter and shooshing of ice skaters in Rockefeller Center...

The carols and classic songs in all the movies we binge watch leading up to the big day to help us get in the Christmas spirit…

Halloween is barely over before the malls and shopping centers and music on hold cranks up the endless loop of Winter Wonderland, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, and Frosty the Snowman, and, depending on your particular childhood memories of this holiday and how it played out in your house, this is either really awesome or a slow merciless death akin to Chinese water torture that FINALLY stops dripping on Christmas Day.

But does the world really need ANOTHER Christmas song?

    Aren't there enough already?

Certainly no one needs another BAD song about Christmas, but what if, just maybe…. YOU wound up penning a Silent Night or O Come, All Ye Faithful, or Tender Tennessee Christmas that actually became part of the sacred canon of Christmas tunes?

This week, John Chisum encourages you to believe in a Christmas miracle one more time and step up to write the songs only you can write.

ISAAC WARDELL: Bringing Worship Back to the People with Audrey Assad, Josh Garrels, Liz Vice, Urban Doxology, and Aaron Keyes Dec 02, 2017
    Show notes

In 12th Century Benedictine tradition, the Church was viewed as a warm and hospitable place always open, and desirous, of wanderers and weary travelers. In fact, one monk would always be posted as the lookout, scanning the horizon for those in need of shelter called the "porter." Whenever a road-worn traveler found his way to the monastery, the porter made sure that all the monks were alerted to greet the guest, wash his feet, feed clothe them, and pronounce that "Christ is surely among us."

With this ancient vow of hospitality in mind, Isaac Wardell has formed The Porter's Gate as a new movement in worship music, conversation, and community that seeks to return the high value of hospitality to us again. The fruit of this movement is The Porter Gate's Worship Project: Volume 1/Work Songs featuring Audrey Assad, Josh Garrels, Liz Vice, Urban Doxology, and Aaron Keyes. Earthy, sober, raw, and organic are words that describe the songs on this stripped down, live project, a completely intentional move to show that authentic worship doesn't have to be over-produced in order to reach the heart.

Wardell, director of worship arts at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville, Virginia, understands very well the need for unity in a racially and politically divided church and country. The violent Unite the Right white supremacists rally garnering international news happened very close to Trinity and hit home for Wardell and the church.

It's time, he says, to be an agent of change, to change the way the church engages the community. To reimagine a movement of redeeming love that seeks to welcome those outside its doors. "Of all our particular practices, liturgies and beliefs, the thing that marks us the most is our welcome, our hospitality," Wardell says. "By becoming the porter at the gate, the Church identifying itself by its welcome/hospitality, it is a renunciation of power..." he says of the organization's mission. "We give up the power to control the narrative and embrace the community and what it brings to the Church." (Quoted from The Welcome of Worship The Porter's Gate Re-Imagines Music That Celebrates the Work of the People by Melissa Riddle Chalos)

If you're someone critical of the "modern worship movement," you'll find Wardell and The Porter's Gate's music quite down-to-earth and refreshing. It's almost like you're sitting in the sanctuary at Trinity singing along with Wardell, Assad, Garrels, and the others as they bring worship back to the people.

TIM TIMMONS: Big Beards, Big Baldness, Big Glasses, Big Life Nov 11, 2017
    Show notes

Tim Timmons' life has always been one of adventure, but for the first time, the singer/songwriter feels awake enough to actually live it. After nearly two decades of ministry and a lifetime as a believer, Timmons is no stranger to the tenets of the Christian faith. Now he finds himself moving beyond believer to follower, awake and alive to the nearness of Jesus. His sophomore album, Awake Our Souls(Reunion Records), is a portrait of Timmons' own awakening and an invitation for every listener to discover the abundant life beyond belief.

"We talk about all these things I've known about my whole life—like freedom in Jesus and overwhelming joy—but I've never known it until now, and it's just this awakening in my soul," the singer shares. "The goal of this record is to invite people into a new reality of the Kingdom of God that is around us all the time. Here are ten songs—ten prayers—that help me practically live in the availability and the truth of God's Kingdom," he says. "It's a huge concept—the Kingdom of God… We have power, but who lives as though the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives inside of us? Jesus is saying, 'You can do anything I did.'"

In this episode, John Chisum yuks it up with the very affable Timmons and talks about Timmons' recent spiritual awakening from professional Christian to authentic believer and how it's affected his entire life, ministry, family, songwriting, and world outlook. Armed with a new contentment in his soul, Timmons' songs have taken on a whole new depth that is nothing short of incendiary to passive, cultural Christianity.

JONATHAN CAIN: "Don't Stop Believing" in the Journey of Life Oct 28, 2017
    Show notes

The piano intro of Journey's mega-hit Don't Stop Believin', written and performed by Jonathan Cain, stands as one of the most iconic musical motifs in all of rock 'n roll history. Cain's own journey through over 40 years of music to date is epic, too, having written monster hits like "Faithfully," "Who's Crying Now," "Open Arms," and with "Don't Stop Believin'" being iTunes #1 rock catalog tune of all time. And, if that's not enough success for one guy, Cain was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 and is still packing out arenas around the world with this classic rock band.

And yet, there's a deeply spiritual side to Cain's life. As he explains in this podcast, he received "prophetic words" from a pastor when he was only ten-years old that music would be his life, words echoed through the prayers of his own father, the one who uttered the words "Don't stop believin'" destined to be one of the most recognized and loved songs on the planet, and most recently by well-known prophetic voices in the country of Ghana speaking blessing and truth over his life. Cain has been guided and blessed through these words, for sure, though life as a rock superstar hasn't always been easy.

John Chisum recently caught up with Cain via Skype to capture some of the moving stories and prophetic undertones of Cain's current journey into Christian music, including his new Christmas release, Unsung Noel. Cain spoke candidly about the "outpourings" of songs God has given him and of his fresh emphasis on writing for the Lord. He's also developing more of his worship leading ministry as part of his dynamic marriage to Pastor Paula White of New Destiny Church in Apopka, Florida.

The journey of Journey's Jonathan Cain is far from over and word has it that the best is yet to come.

You can follow Jonathan here http://jonathancainmusic.com/, Addiction Sound, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
