    Smell Ya Later

Two friends from the beauty industry chat about all things scent and smell. Every week, Smell Ya Later explores the myriad ways we interact with the aromas and odors in our lives, the scents seared into our memories, and how scent defines the way we envision our future.Β

125: What Are Your Fragrance Beige Flags? Jul 11, 2023
    Show notes

There are red flags, there are green flags, and now there are beige flags β€” all of which we've somehow made about fragrance and scent in this episode. We answer a listener hotline memo about cultivating one's sense of smell, we discuss that "perfume girl" scent and what its commonalities are, and other nonsense.

    Show notes

A lovely listener and tattoo artist tagged us in a photo of a Mugler Angel bottle she tatted on a client, which prompted (half of) us (Tynan has a bottle of Britney Spears Curious on his arm) to ponder: what fragrances would be cool tattoos?

    121: The Best Non-Visual Compliments May 30, 2023
    Show notes

The best compliments are ones where you feel understood, known, and sometimes maybe a little too seen. This is where fragrance serves as a homing beacon. Here is a fun little ep about the most memorable scent compliments we've received, as well as copious encouragement to compliment other peoples' fragrances. Why? Because it's nice and makes people feel nice, and sometimes it's just nice to smell nice things and say that out loud.

120: If You're Gonna Do One Thing This Summer, It's Smell Me May 23, 2023
    Show notes

We are exploring "beast mode" fragrances as a concept, as a way of wearing scent, and as a trigger. It could very well be the antithesis of summer fragrances, just happening to have a resurgence in relevance as summer approaches. While we don't believe in seasonal scents, summer tends to have a hold on fragrance wearers' perceptions of the existence of summer scents as a concept. With respect to that, we discuss our favorite scents that go as long as the days are this time of year.

119: Fragrance Has Always been Quiet Luxury May 09, 2023
    Show notes

All this chit-chat about quiet luxury is skipping fragrance, which one could argue has always been quiet luxury. Your hosts go on about what luxury is now, what kind of fragrances and scent notes narrate the perception of luxury, and agree to disagree about what luxury even is, before eventually agreeing after all. Does it matter what volume you luxuriate at? If discussions about money and spending annoy you, this episode is... loaded.

118: The Santal Elephant In The Room feat. Perfumer Frank Voelkl May 02, 2023
    Show notes

We have the perfumer of the moment, Frank Voelkl on for this benchmark episode of Smell Ya Later. We talk scent trends, signature perfume styles, how one fragrance he created is solely responsible for Big Sandalwood's rise, why everyone is obsessed with scents that smell like nothing, and his favorite scent that he's made.

117: Make Everyone Around You Suffer Apr 25, 2023

What is the perfume spray threshold? How many sprays do you spray? We asked, we researched (went on Reddit), and we sprayed, all in the interest of Sprayologyβ„’ (not to be confused with anything remotely involving science).

    116: What's The Value Of Viral? Apr 11, 2023
    Show notes

OK, look, we haven't seen each other in over a week so this is a lot of catching up in all areas: beauty, personal, taxes, fragrance, professional, fragrance...

This episode has everything (but a concrete agenda):

    • Power Couple swag swaps
    • Sable went to some influencer party at The Met
    • Tynan did his taxes.
    • Do not pay for Raya
    • Manifesting
    • Sable has to finish her dumb book
    • The pistachio scent supremacy
    • Do not ask us what beauty products to buy (we don't know)
    • Why doesn't anyone know how to write about fragrance still?
    • Beauty's capitalist gaze
    • What even are indie fragrances anymore?
    • What fragrances do most people think are fancy?
    • The me-ification of all things beauty
