Hoop App: Easy Way for Students to Meet Strangers on Snapchat Feb 13, 2020
    Show notes

The Hoop app makes it easier than ever for students to meet strangers on Snapchat. You must log in to the Hoop app with a valid Snapchat account. Hoop app is built on the Snapchat platform (but is not owned by Snapchat). Hoop users swipe through profiles to find new people to connect with on Snapchat. On each profile the Hoop user can either: push an “X” and go to the next profile or push the Snapchat icon to ask them to connect on Snapchat. Users must earn Diamonds to make new connections. They can earn them by sharing a referral code, rating the app on the App Store, taking surveys, adding new Hoop profiles to Snapchat, and through other virtual tasks.

Yubo App: "Tinder for Teens" Feb 06, 2020
    Show notes

The Yubo app markets itself as a way to make friends even though it’s mostly used as a dating app. This can be confusing for teens and tweens who join the app and are not aware of the intentions of other users. This app is nicknamed “Tinder for Snapchat” and “Tinder for Teens.” Yubo app users can join a live group stream or swipe through profiles. If two users swipe right on each other’s photos then they become a match and can chat or share Instagram and Snapchat usernames. The Yubo app is free, but users can pay for a premium subscription to up their visibility and get rid of ads.

Teaching Students Compassion, Dignity, and Respect with guest David Flood Feb 04, 2020
    Show notes

Teaching Students Compassion, Dignity, and Respect

David gives every student he speaks to three challenges:

Look on the Inside - don’t focus on another student’s appearance or the color of their skin, religion, or disability. Try to focus on the whole person. Be a friend to everyone.

Connect With and Identify Two Adults at School - It’s important for students to always have a trusted adult they can turn to if they need to talk to someone or if they have a problem.

Noone Eats Alone - When David's son Justin was in middle school, he came home one day and told his dad he ate lunch alone. David now challenges other students to make sure no one in the cafeteria ever eats alone and to be a friend to those "invisible" students, like his own autistic son. He teaches teens to “be an includer, not an excluder” at lunchtime, and also on the bus, in hallway conversations, and on social media.

"If you can connect with the place in yourself when you realize and recognize that someone near you is lonely that needs to be reached out to - that's the message," he said.

David teaches students that “your life is not about you,” rather it’s about the way you treat the people around you. He learned this from his mother and from his son, Justin. David calls his son his “onramp to the highway of kindness.” Watching other students show kindness and include him in social activities taught David that reaching out to others goes a long way.

This message carries over to the digital world. David uses the example of friends chatting on a public social media page about an upcoming party. How do the students who weren’t invited feel when they read the comments? David encourages students to always be aware of who’s watching and try to prevent making others feel left out.

“A phone is a great connection to the world, but it’s no substitute for personal interaction and looking someone in the eye,” said David.

The Negative Effects of TikTok with guest Theresa Desuyo - Screen Time & Digital Family Expert with the Qustodio App Jan 31, 2020
    Show notes

Smart Social Founder Josh Ochs caught up with Theresa Desuyo, the Screen Time & Digital Family Expert for the Qustodio app. What is the Qustodio app? It's a parental control app. Their goal is to give visibility to parents with information about how their students are using games and apps on their devices. Currently two million families use the app, which allows families to see how much time they are spending on apps and games so they can set healthy limits for themselves and their students. The app also helps to filter out harmful content such as cyberbullying, explicit content, and predators.

Theresa talked with Josh about some of the negative effects of TikTok and gave some tips on how to talk with your students about using TikTok and screen time as a whole.

Based on Qustodio usership, TikTok is one of the most popular apps for kids ages 4-18. It's at the top of the list followed by Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. Theresa noted that TikTok is actually more popular among younger users, with interest falling away for older kids.

Theresa shared Qustodio's data for the average time spent in the TikTok app by age:

    • 4 to 6-year-olds spend 45 minutes per day in the app.
    • 7 to 9-year-olds spend 60 minutes per day in the app.
    • 10 to 12-year-olds spend 1 hour and 15 minutes per day in the app.
    • 13 to 15-year-olds spend 65 minutes per day in the app.
    • 16 to 18-year olds spend 57 min per day in the app.

    Negative Effects of TikTok

    TikTok May Affect Attention Span

Each TikTok video is 15 seconds long, with the option of putting together many clips into a 60 second video. If on average a user is on TikTok for an hour per day, users will watch around 240 videos in that hour, depending on the length and amount of times a user watches each video.

    TikTok Allows Messaging from Strangers

TikTok has 800 million monthly users worldwide, with 26.5 million users just in the US. 50% of those global users are under the age of 34. That's a lot of strangers for kids to interact with.

TikTok has Very Little Restrictions on Explicit Content

TikTok videos have no obvious pause button, so the videos play on an endless loop. There are no warnings for explicit content in videos and students could hear or see dangerous and inappropriate behavior without even looking for it.

So, what can parents do? Theresa and Josh agree that parents should have open conversations with their kids about the apps they are using. Create a social media agreement and lay down the ground rules and consequences to breaking those rules.

Theresa mentions three things to teach your kids around screen time:

    1. Teach accountability – talk about the rules and consequences if they don’t follow them.
    2. Remember that not all screen time is equal - what are your students doing on their phone that is productive? What is purely entertainment?
    3. Teach healthy use of their devices – take breaks and be connected with the world around you.

Theresa also warns parents to monitor their own behavior with their devices. What might you be doing that you want to discourage your students from doing? Model good screen time behavior in your home.

Byte App: The New Video Looping App Jan 30, 2020
    Show notes

The Byte app gives users just 6-seconds to show off their humor, talent, or creativity. It launched in late January 2020 with a lot of online hype about its similarity to its video looping app predecessor, the Vine app. Byte is sticking to basic features for now with big plans to unroll more in the future, including a way for influencers to make money on the app.
