2020 and 2021 has been overwhelming for most of us, dealing with various types of loss, pain, worry, grief, trauma, mental illnesses, health scares etc. This episode introduces the idea of leading with a trauma sensitive approach with our interpersonal & intra-personal relationships. It also acknowledges that trauma is NOT the new clout term- instead of criticizing that everyone is talking about it, maybe we should view it as less people suffering in silence for various reasons. So many of us are fighting battles we never discuss- lead with kindness. ♥️

How Racial Disparities in Healthcare Almost Cost Me My Life ————-This episode begins as a check-in & brief life update but the true focus is on racial disparities in healthcare. In JULY I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Embolism in every lobe of both lungs, a deflated heart valve, deflated intra ventricular septum & a right heart strain after constantly being ignored by the doctors since reporting symptoms in JANUARY. Basically spent 7 months in pain, distress & constant fatigue after multiple doctors visits & their assumptions that I was just wanting pain medicine. By the time they decided to LISTEN and take me serious- I was NO longer able to TALK because my lungs were completely filled with clots— the irony. Imagine losing your life mainly because you’re Black— that’s my reality. My lived experience. The reality of so many. The reality of too many. (Side note: I sound different and winded because my lungs are still healing).

Episode 5: Discursive Injustice: The Power in Language & Authority x Social Identities Nov 14, 2019

What are the implications when Social Identities intersect with the Power in Language & Authority? When I walk into a college classroom as a BLACK FEMALE instructor, I have to prove why I’m qualified to be there, even after 4 college degrees— the same does not ring true for my White peers, especially males. Why? In this segment, Al & I explore the intricacies of the philosophy behind power, authority, language along with intersectionality. (Even the impact on/of social media!) Al is a 5th year PhD candidate in Philosophy & Also the president of my Mizzou’s graduate student government. His research examines the social philosophy of language, particularly on why members of marginalized groups sometimes lack authority to successfully carry out speech acts like ordering and recommending, despite their having institutional credentials that should be sufficient to allow them to give an order. The main idea is that some people face barriers even after entering positions of power. This work provides us tools to characterize systematic barriers of oppression, that way we may be able to help remove some of those barriers. ~ viviendo y aprendiendo ~

- Why are aspects of my identity risk factors against me, my well-being and the quality of my life? - Why are Black Females the least protected group?. - We often hear and talk about the school to prison pipeline and the effects on Black boys and men as if there’s no impact on Black girls & Black women. Why? - Black girls and Black women are severely impacted by numerous racial disparities. Not only do they share these experiences with Black men and boys, they have additional struggles that only a black female would know, much less understand. Why is this? - Why am I only seen or celebrated if I conform to white middle-class femininity? - Why are black Women often seen as less than? - Understanding black female experiences aid in increased consciousness where our femininity is seen as inferior. This is what underlies exploitation & criminalization of Black girls. - Black women are subject to public scrutiny constantly that affects our ability to thrive & shape our identity, get opportunities, survive! - Why are black girls from low income families the prey for sexual predators & abusers? - Many Black women like myself have viewed defiance as a necessity sometimes: - Maybe to some Black women being.... - “Ghetto” represents resilience to racial & gender oppression. - “Loud” is a demand to be heard. - Having an “Attitude” is to reject a doctrine of invisibility & mistreatment. - Being “Fabulous” to revise the idea that SES isolation is equated with not having access to materially desirable things. To be a ghetto black girl means to reinvent what it means to be black, poor, and female. - Our survival skills are degraded and punished rather than recognized as tools of resilience. - These circumstances are a result of the judgmental perceptions about how we respond to injustice. What can we do? How do we change the narrative? How do we protect our Black girls? What role will you play in the decriminalization of Black girls in schools? What role will you play in the protection of Black women? What am i doing? - challenging the narrative and embracing my true self without conformity to white femininity. - Research to promote social justice. - Projects that bring awareness and teach the skills necessary - Allyship and mentorship of Black youngsters - Using my platforms to inform, inspire and educate. What will you do?
