    Show notes

I want to wish you a very happy Holiday Season from me over here at Speech Time Fun!

I know many of you are enjoying a well-deserved break, so in this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am reflecting on the year that we have had because not only is this our holiday episode, but it’s the last episode of 2022.

I don’t know about you, but for me, this year has been a little…cray cray. I am still working in the schools, just like you. And we are understaffed, overworked, and honestly a little burnt out. Our students are needing more support and it feels like there’s just not enough hours in a day.

If you are feeling this way too, I just want you to know that you’re not alone! Tune into this episode for a reflection of this year and some words of encouragement as we move into 2023.

Fighting for my Voice: My Life with Verbal Apraxia with Jordan Christian LeVan Nov 28, 2022
    Show notes

Are you wondering how you can have a greater impact on your students with verbal apraxia?

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Jordan Christian LeVan to talk about his journey with verbal apraxia. He is sharing tips for SLPs who are working with these students.

Jordan Christian LeVan is an apraxia, disability, and mental health advocate. He writes about his life experiences with childhood apraxia of speech on his blog, Fighting for my Voice: My Life with Verbal Apraxia. He wants to show the world that being different is okay and that we should celebrate who we all are.

Jordan couldn’t speak until he was 5 years old, and to have a conversation with strangers was difficult even at age 12. Nevertheless, Jordan aims to be the person he needed when he was younger. He recently published his nonfictional children’s book series called, Jordan’s World. It has sold over 15,000 copies and has been picked up by numerous retailers.

It’s so important that we show students that there’s nothing wrong with the things that make them who they are and that we teach them how to advocate for themselves, so tune in to learn more about Jordan’s experience and his advice for SLPs.

Using Song Lyrics To Target A Variety of Goals Nov 14, 2022
    Show notes

Have you ever used song lyrics in your speech therapy sessions?

I’m all about using my students' interests which is why I have high-interest themes in my membership every month. One of those interests is music.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I’m sharing how you can use song lyrics to target a variety of student goals while keeping students engaged.

There are always going to be students that complain that speech activities are boring. Over the years, I realized that I have to use their interests and change things up each and every time. I can’t use the same lessons or games or worksheets in my sessions because it gets old for students really fast.

A lot of students spend their free time listening to music on their iPads or watching music videos on YouTube, so why not use that to our benefit? The tips in this episode will help you use song lyrics to work on multiple different goals.

You can take any goal you're working on and use some lyrics to make it motivating, engaging, and relevant to your students. Tune in to hear my favorite ways to use lyrics to work on articulation, vocabulary, inferencing, social skills, and so much more!

How To Teach Tier 3 Vocabulary Words in a Meaningful Way Nov 07, 2022
    Show notes

Wondering how you can help your students master their tier 3 vocabulary words?

If you have been following me for a while, you know that I am a huge fan of working with tier 2 vocabulary words, but in this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I’m sharing my best tips for teaching tier 3 vocabulary words to your speech students.

For so many students, we work with them and their parents work with them, and they seem to have these words down… but then they go to take their test and struggle. Maybe the word was used differently or it was put in a different order so it was more challenging for them to remember.

If you want to help your students be more successful with tier 3 words, there are ways that you can do it in a more meaningful way rather than just drill and kill or memorization.

These tips will help your students find more success with these words. Tune in to learn more about my best tips, tricks, resources, and strategies for helping students master their tier 3 vocabulary words.

Autistic Play is Authentic Play with Cari Ebert Oct 31, 2022
    Show notes

Many SLPs were taught the medical model of working with autistic children where we found the deficit and worked to fill it. However, we know now that autistic children develop differently, and we need to focus on helping them become the most successful version of themselves, not more like their neurotypical peers.

There’s a lot of unlearning to do here, so in this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Cari Ebert to talk about becoming a relationship-based therapist, the best methods for working with autistic children, and more.

Cari Ebert, MS, CCC-SLP, is a pediatric speech-language pathologist in private practice in the Kansas City, Missouri area. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1993 and her master’s degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1995.

Cari is a therapist, consultant, author, and nationally recognized speaker who gets paid to do what she loves most…TALK! She has dedicated her career to helping young children achieve their maximum potential with speech, language, and social-emotional development. Cari has an autistic son, allowing her to engage audiences both as a professional and as a parent of a neurodivergent child.

With our autistic students, we need to look at what they love most and use it to support and facilitate their development. Tune in to learn more from Cari about neurodiversity-affirming therapy and autistic play.

Even after graduate school is over, SLPs are continuously learning. We are constantly being given new research and information that could change how we do therapy.

No matter how long we may have been doing things one way, it’s important to adapt. We live in a time where we have easy access to new information that can improve our therapy skills and make us the best SLPs we can be as long as we lean into it.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Jess Teixeira to talk about unlearning what you learned in graduate school and learning new ways of doing things for your students that put their needs first.

Jessica is a licensed speech-language pathologist in the state of Massachusetts and has been practicing for two years. She is a pediatric private practice owner working mainly with neurodivergent children and specializing in gestalt language processing.

Tune in as we chat about Gestalt language processing, child-led therapy, neurodiversity-affirming approaches to therapy, learning new things, and so much more!
