    Show notes

Do you know what happened on this day in Star Wars history? On Aug. 25th 1977, Luke, Han, Leia and Chewbacca made the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. This issue features one of the first in-depth interviews with George Lucas, and we share all the good parts! Lucas speaks about the struggles of getting Star Wars off the ground, storylines he wants to revisit in future films (this is the first time he mentions Vader getting burnt up in the volcanic pit), he also talks about how he would be so happy to go back and redo the special effects since he was so disappointed in them, and so much more. We've uploaded all the article pages here in our show notes so you can follow along as you listen.

338: Writer Steven Melching and the Hoojibs Aug 19, 2021
    Show notes

Star Wars animation writer Steven Melching joins us to share stories of writing on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: Resistance! Over an hour of great insight into TV writing, because his filmography includes Batman, Transformers, He-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, RoboCop, and Marvel franchises. Steven gives us behind-the-scenes stories about some of the fan-favorite Star Wars episodes, like "Twilight of the Apprentice," "Rookies," and the emotional Star Wars Rebels Season 4 Finale. He also has advice for up and coming writers, and shares his thoughts on The Bad Batch. We talk King Kong, Hoojibs and so much more!!

    About Hoojibs

We started STN back in 2013 to share our passion for Star Wars and Disney, to create a family-friendly community, and, to make Hoojibs canon! As of 8/16/21 we completed all of our goals as the news broke that Star Wars Adventures Annual 2021 was to feature - HOOJIBS!!!

We want to thank Brian Sims of alerting us to this news first - he told us to go look at Twitter where Matt Martin of the Star Wars story group had posted this tweet:

    https://twitter.com/missingwords/status/1427388511309598730

WOW! You can check out more about this news and HOOJIBS in this new article, and a history of the hoojibs in our Episode 208. But that's not all! It seems like Lucasfilm is fulfilling all of our wishes. Not only are we getting a comic with hoojibs in November, but we're also getting a Life Day comic! Check out this starwars.com article for more.

Totally Tell Me Everything: 6...about Theme Parks Aug 03, 2021
    Show notes

Hello, friends! This month, we're gabbing about THEME PARKS, a subject Sarah and Bryn have a lot of experience with.

Question 1: What was your favorite Theme Park experience as a kid, teen and adult? Kid
    • Not Afraid: Bryn begins with the tale of the time her former fighter pilot father took her on her first upside-down roller coaster, the Corkscrew at Knott's Berry Farm in '80s Buena Park, California.
    • Risk-taker: Sarah's also got a roller coaster memory for us: When it came to amusement park time for the Heitman family, the formula was Sarah and dad bonding on roller coasters, and her mom enjoying watching them from a bench with a nice coffee. Sarah's first experience was on The Rattler at Fiesta Texas, a wooden roller coaster.
    Teen
    • Living in an '80s movie: Bryn takes us for a trip to a slightly alarming teenage memory of her 8th grade field trip to Disneyland, but redeems herself with tales of sultry summer nights at all-ages dance club Studio K at Knott's Berry Farm. Bryn didn't know this at the time of our recording, but found out that Studio K was located in the Fiesta Village esplanade where Jaguar! now stands.
    • Sweet freedom: As a member of marching back from middle through high school, Sarah has plenty of band trips to various theme parks under her stylish belt. And she remembers this great sense of freedom, being unleashed at the parks without chaperones clinging tight: You're given your stipend of money to spend and a time to return to the bus. Have at it! She felt like flying.
      • Biggest ride memory: Batman: The Ride for the first time. And the soundtrack theme was pumping through the line, it was at night, and it was very, very cool.
    Adult
    • Moving to LA = Theme parks galore: Sarah discovered that when your new college friends have annual passes to Disneyland, you get an annual pass and become a regular. And she discovered that her favorite Knott's Berry Farm is actually Knott's Scary Farm.
    • Moms and Kids and Solo Moms: Of course, one of Bryn's favorite things about theme parks has to be getting to take her kids there for the first time and watching their relationship with the parks evolve as they get older. An unexpected second discovery has been the joy of going to theme parks alone, which has been a gift to herself that has made a big impact on her.

Extra: Bryn likes themed stuff: Clifton's Cafeterias, Old World, Madonna Inn

Question 2: What do we want to learn about Theme Parks?
    • Bryn dug into the difference between an amusement park and a theme park.
      • This article from Theme Park Insider gives a good definition of a theme park.
      • An amusement park generally is a large outdoor area with fairground rides, shows, refreshments, games of chance or skill, and other entertainments. American amusement parks came out of the idea of the "pleasure gardens" of Europe.
      • A theme park is an amusement park that's organized and built around a particular theme or group of themes.
    • Sarah brings us the 411 on roller coasters!
      • History: Where did they come from?
      • Engineering! How does a roller coaster work?
        • Reading: Newton's first law of motion
        • Extra credit: Weightlessness
    • Extra credit: Weightlessness
Question 3: What are you excited about regarding Theme Parks, especially now that they have reopened after a long period of closure?
    • Sarah is super-digging how Disney California Adventure's new Avengers Campus is mirroring the Disney+ shows and changing up characters and interactions
    • Bryn is looking forward to being more present when she's at the parks and appreciating the privilege of being there.
    • And both of us are excited about getting dressed up in fun outfits/Disneybounds, and packing our bags with just the right stuff to optimize our day. Especially big scarves.
BONUS Question: What's your favorite immersive Theme Park experience?
    • Sarah relates her experience of walking into Be Our Guest, the Beauty and the Beast restaurant in New Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom. It was literally walking IN TO the beauty and the beast film's ballroom.
    • Bryn cheated and said the Exploratorium's Tactile Dome in San Francisco. We'll all have to forgive her.

336: JUNGLE CRUISE and Tom Ameen Jul 29, 2021
    Show notes

Composer, pianist and good friend Tom Ameen joins us to share his latest Disney-inspired relaxation album, Magical Meditations. It features tracks like I See The Light, it's a small world, Circle of Life - all reimagined at slower tempos perfect for naptime.

Then Richard and Sarah share a spoiler-free review of JUNGLE CRUISE. Did it live up to the hype? Was it worth the wait? Would we watch this, The African Queen or The Country Bears? And most importantly, we want to know what you thought of the film, regardless of our comments. Please share with us on social media (links below) or in our Facebook Group.

This episode also features a few quotes from Gwendoline Yeo (voice of Nala Se on THE BAD BATCH). On July 26 we attended a Virtual Roundtable. My full write-up will be here on Friday. We shared some fun bits here:

    • How to pronounce Kaminoan according to Dave Filoni.
    • How she changes her voice acting based on the aliens she portrays, like Nala Se as a Kaminoan and Gungans.

335: LOKI - For All Time. Always. Jul 23, 2021
    Show notes

Skywalking through LOKI -- Season One! Richard and Sarah go deep into this Marvel Disney+ series - we talk characters, soundtrack and share press tidbits from Kate Herron (director) and Natalie Holt (composer). We also share some thoughtful comments from Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston. In Shout-Outs, it's all about you as we share your thoughts on LOKI.

The series picks up right after a moment we see in Avengers: Endgame. The Avengers have traveled through time to pick up various Infinity Stones, and bungled an attempt to pick up the Tesseract (Space Stone). Instead, Loki seizes the opportunity and takes it, and disappears!!! This causes a nexus event in the timeline, because back in the original Avengers film, Loki is captured and taken back to Asgard by Thor. So in Loki TV series, we see where he reappears - in Mongolia where he is captured by the TVA - The Time Variance Authority which is a bureaucratic organization that exists outside of time and space and monitors the timeline.

They give Loki a choice: face being erased from existence due to being a "time variant", or help fix the timeline and stop a greater threat - a Loki Variant.

In this King-Size episode, we dive into Classic Marvel Star Wars Comics King-Size Annual #1! (December 1979) This one-shot story is double the size of a regular issue, and is split into two parts: "The Long Hunt" and "A Dual of Eagles". We will be talking about both with our special guest, Chris Alexander (Star Wars Origami author).

Richard, Sarah and Chris discuss this comic and find FTOOM! Fast Facts (classic comic people or places that appear now in Star Wars books, comics and films). Plus, what is up with our heroes mingling with the likes of fantasy characters - are those werewolves?? We all remark on the artwork - it is SO MUCH better than previous issues. Hmmm, could that be due to new artists? We think so. Do you remember this comic as a kid, like Richard and Chris? Or are you new to these stories - like Sarah? Either way, we have a fun podcast episode for you.
