427: Classic Marvel STAR WARS Comics #42 "THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK" Adaptation Part 4 Aug 03, 2023
    Show notes

Time to head back in time and revisit Classic Marvel Star Wars Comics! We break down the fourth issue of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Marvel comics adaptation - BOUNTY HUNTERS. How is the artwork? What are our fond memories of this cover? And just how much does this issue feature the bounty hunters? This issue also contains Sarah's favorite love scene in all of STAR WARS - how does the comic measure up???

This episode also contains our tribute to PAUL REUBENS and some heart-felt memories.

Watch the video version with the full comic above, or listen to the audio podcast here:

Aboard his Star Destroyer, Darth Vader has assembled a motley crew of Bounty Hunters to find the Falcon with the distinct command - "No disintegrations!"

Disney's HAUNTED MANSION Review: Foolish Mortals, Beware! Jul 30, 2023
Show notes I miss Eddie Murphy!

Haunted Mansion is in my top three attractions at the Disney parks. I enjoyed Eddie Murphy's Haunted Mansion (2003). I absolutely loved Muppets Haunted Mansion. We have Haunted Mansion Christmas tree ornaments! Can you imagine how excited I was to see this new iteration of HAUNTED MANSION?

It saddens me to say this version lost me from the beginning. It was very hard to root for the protagonist when you think he's a jerk. Let's back up here and summarize the uninspired plot. Single mother Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her nine-year old son Travis (Chase Dillon) move into the mansion with the hopes of turning it into a bed and breakfast. Very quickly they realize the house is haunted! However, they never appear frightened when freaky occurrences happen such as when a suit of armor suddenly appears right behind them. I don't know about you but at that point I'd be scrambling for my car keys!

Father Kent (Owen Wilson) pops into the story and enlists the help of grieving astrophysicist Ben (LaKeith Stanfield). We then take a Wizard of Oz detour as the two enlist more help from psychic Harriet (Tiffany Haddish) and then visit haunted house historian Prof. Bruce Davis (Danny Devito) only to steal his blueprints to the mansion. When that plan goes awry, Davis ends up joining the ghost buster group. Now this overpacked cast has to rid the house of the ghosts and the ghost that is haunting the ghosts!

When Ben arrives at the mansion with his camera that can photograph dark matter, he is paid $2,000 for his services. He doesn't believe any of these hauntings are real so he couldn't even be bothered to take actual pictures but instead make a "click" sound with his mouth. That is what I meant when I said it is hard to root for a protagonist who I think is a jerk. If you're not going to do the work then give Gabbie back her $2,000! This really irritated me.

    No Direction!

Maybe this film was just too big for director Justin Simien ("Dear White People," "Bad Hair"). Performances were out of sync with the scenes.

If it's a scary scene, the characters should be frightened, not just slightly taken aback. With a dream team cast like this who can work circles around this material, you have to look towards the director for bringing the right reactions from the scene. Rosario Dawson has nothing to do in the film, but if two or three characters had been cut out (or more to the point SHOULD have been cut out) it would have given her something to do.

Another A-lister in the cast is Jared Leto as the Hatbox ghost. He was a CGI character and when he spoke there was so much reverb you couldn't understand what he was saying. They could've saved even more by cutting out the unnecessary cameos. I was excited to see Dan Levy but his insignificant role as a counterpart to Winona Ryder's tour guide at Crump Manor took away more than it gave.

When the film detoured into the backstory of Alistair Crump (AKA The Hatbox Ghost), the film got exciting! I love backstories on villains since they often come from a sympathetic place. (Big kudos for paying homage to Disney Imagineer Rolly Crump who was a leading artist in the Haunted Mansion attraction.)

Will the Hatbox Ghost save the day?

I really liked the concept of the Hatbox Ghost holding the 999 other happy haunts to increase his power and bring terror to the world. But it just made me want even more of Alistair Crump's story. At this point we've seen enough Haunted Mansions iterations, let's focus on the characters who inhabit the mansion and their stories! Jamie Lee Curtis was wonderful as Madame Leota in both her corporeal state and housed in her crystal ball. The film really came alive (no pun intended) when these characters were brought into the story and I was excited to learn more about them. The excitement was short-lived since the film had to get back to the main plot of grief for both Ben and Gabbie who had lost a loved one and now have to move on with their lives.

There are plenty of Easter Eggs and references that will make Haunted Mansion fans excited. However, the couple I sat next to had no idea what any of the references were since they kept whispering, "I don't get it." Since Simien is a huge fan of the attraction it did look like he had a blast sprinkling in stretching walls, hitchhiking ghosts, portrait ghosts, the Duelists, and concept art. And of course, what Haunted Mansion iteration would be complete without the earworm that is "Grim Grinning Ghosts." That theme permeates the film with plenty of iterations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSaqSVi--Ms HAUNTED MANSION has been HOCUS POCUSed!

Unfortunately I don't see HAUNTED MANSION making back its $150 million budget anytime soon. I would really like to know why Disney thought to release Haunted Mansion in the middle of summer instead of closer to Halloween. You'd think they would have learned from the dismal box office of Hocus Pocus when that Halloween-themed film was released in July of 1993. Unlike Hocus Pocus, it's unlikely this film will build a cult audience or ever have a nostalgic resurgence. At the end of the Disney park attraction, a ghost hauntingly tells guests to "hurry back." Sorry that won't be happening here.

A Star Trek Musical and More at Star Trek Universe Panel - San Diego Comic-Con 2023 Jul 24, 2023
    Show notes

At San Diego Comic-Con 2023, I attended my first Star Trek Hall H panel - an interesting affair due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. I was not expecting to see any actors from our favorite new Star Trek series like Strange New Worlds, but I did expect to hear from a director or producer. However, the panel began with one moderator - Scott Mantz (Film Critic, Variety) - and he remained the single person on stage sharing new footage from upcoming Star Trek series.

Scott began by explaining his Star Trek super-fandom which began at the age of five, then went on to warn us that this would be a content-heavy panel. Indeed it was! Much of this content you can see now, so I'll share with you what we learned, and any links to content you can view right now.

The excitement levels of the crowd started on a high with a beautifully edited sequence that mixed all the matching scenes from The Original Series, The Next Generation, Star Trek (2009), and all the other Star Trek series through Strange New Worlds. All the Captains said "their thing", the various Star Trek ships all jumped to warp, kissing scenes, friendship scenes, and more. This 3-minute sequence made us all tear up!

As the panel waxed on, however, I felt the crowd's excitement begin to wane as we realized that we were only going to view content, and not hear directly from current Star Trek creators and producers like Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, Bryan Fuller, and Kirsten Beyer. This was unlike any Hall H panel I'd ever attended, and certainly a small let-down.

Let's go over all the footage we saw, and then I'll share my thoughts on the entire experience.

    Star Trek Discovery

Season 5 of Star Trek Discovery is currently scheduled for an early 2024 release on Paramount+, and we were able to view the first 5 minutes of footage. You can too!

The new clip features Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and season five's newest cast members Callum Keith Rennie as Rayner, Elias Toufexis as L'ak and Eve Harlow as Moll. This fifth and final season will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. Sounds a bit like INDIANA JONES, don't you think?

    Star Trek: Lower Decks

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an animated series boasting a tongue-in-cheek commentary of lower deck officers on a low-ranking ship in Starfleet - the opposite of the high-stakes flagship Enterprise featured in many Star Trek series and films! Scott Mantz announced that season 4 will premiere with two episodes on Thursday, September 7, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Paramount+ international markets exclusively on the service.

In season four, an unknown force is destroying starships and threatening galactic peace. Luckily, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos isn't important enough for stuff like that! Instead, Ensigns Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Tendi (Noël Wells), and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) are keeping up with their Starfleet duties, avoiding malevolent computers and getting stuck in a couple caves – all while encountering new and classic aliens along the way. Here is the trailer:

    Strange New Worlds

Season 2 of Strange New Worlds is airing on Paramount+, and Star Trek fans, including me, love the series. Therefore, those of us musical-loving fans freaked out when Mantz confirmed that the series would get the first Star Trek Musical episode in the franchise's history!!! Want to see a trailer???

The special musical episode "Subspace Rhapsody" will feature 10 original songs, plus a "Subspace Rhapsody" version of the series' main title, with music and lyrics by Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo) and Tom Polce (Letters to Cleo, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend). The episode will stream on Thursday, August 3. Please click HERE to pre-save the "Subspace Rhapsody" soundtrack on all available digital music streaming platforms.

In season two of STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, under the command of Captain Christopher Pike, confronts increasingly dangerous stakes, explores uncharted territories and encounters new life and civilizations. The series stars Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley, Ethan Peck as Spock, and Jess Bush as Christine Chapel.

After all this fun footage, Scott Mantz led the panel to its' crescendo: a screening of the much-anticipated Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks crossover episode, "Those Old Scientists". I always enjoy watching an episode in a room full of thousands of fans. It's an opportunity to experience our favorite geek content together, and feel special because you are the first.

But this experience was lessened when Mantz announced that this episode would stream on Paramount+ within the hour! We weren't expecting it until next week, 7/27, so to hear that our 5-day special preview was cut down to an hour hurt a tiny bit - especially for those that had waited hours to be in Hall H. Want to watch that episode right now? Head to Paramount+.

In general, the Star Trek panel definitely made the news and shared lots of new content, but will it be a panel I'll remember in my top 5 favorites? Most certainly not. Hopefully one day I'll be able to fully embrace my burgeoning Star Trek fandom by attending a mind-blowing Hall H Star Trek panel. To the future - Engage!

420: Return of the Jedi Unauthorized Timeline May 25, 2023
    Show notes

Our Star Wars month celebration continues with the 40th anniversary of RETURN OF THE JEDI! Authors Justin Berger and Jamie Benning share details of their NEW book, Return of the Jedi Unauthorized Timeline, out June 1st.

We (Richard and Sarah) then recap Comic-Con Revolution: our Star Wars Trivia panel, book sales, and meeting TIMOTHY ZAHN.

Then it's on to Star Wars news this past week, which unfortunately included sad events. Ray Stevenson passed away on Sunday May 21. Many fans first heard him as the voice of Gar Saxxon on THE CLONE WARS and STAR WARS REBELS, and most recently we all cheered him and his enthusiasm at Star Wars Celebration Europe when he was promoting AHSOKA.

Then Disney announced that the Galactic Starcruiser will journey on its final voyage in September, and we are sad to see this go.
