    Single Mother Survival Guide

Becoming a single mum is one of the most daunting and overwhelming life changes someone will ever go through. Whether you are pregnant or have teenagers, you will most likely be confused and struggling with what to do next. I became a single mum in 2013 when my daughter was just a few months old, and it has been a challenging but rewarding journey ever since. This Podcast (and the website www.singlemothersurvivalguide) was created to assist newly single mothers in all things they may need to know about.

SO WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOTHER SURVIVAL GUIDE PODCAST ABOUT?

A Podcast for single mums, made by a single mum… The Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast includes a mixture of me babbling about single mums business and interviews and discussions with different people and experts about different topics.

First off the ranks this includes an interview with a Wills and Estate lawyer which contains everything YOU need to know about getting a Will done, an interview with a financial adviser on everyday money management, savings, spending and so forth, an interview with an online security expert so that YOU know how to keep yourself secure online, an open interview with a domestic violence survivor and advocate, and another interview with a financial adviser on everything to do with insurance, and what you should think about getting insured to ensure the financial safety for you and your kids. Coming up after that I have chats with people including parenting experts, family lawyers, and a life coach.

I also chat about the social stigma of being a single mum, single parent travel, everyday tips to make YOUR life easier, dating, personal budgeting, resources out there to help YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN, child support, domestic violence, successful co-parenting, advantages to being a single mum, and the list goes on…

Hayley thought her relationship with her husband had been a fairytale. They had been together for more than nine years. They had traveled, enjoyed hiking and doing things together in the outdoors, had just finished renovating a home and had just had a baby. Hayley was very much in love. So when her husband's demeanor changed and he then casually told her that he didn't love her anymore, her whole world stopped. But, as shocking as this story is, ultimately it's a story of hope and one woman's strength.

This is Part 1 of a three-part series with Hayley. In this episode, Hayley shares the start of her experience with sudden wife abandonment.

    128 - International parental child abduction: Lisa Kennedy's story Part 2 Jan 22, 2019
    Show notes

Lisa Kennedy met her husband when she was 21 years old. It was love at first sight. They got married and built a life, business, and family together in Australia. Nine years into their marriage they were on a routine holiday in Turkey with their 8-month-old son when one day her husband took their son to visit his parents. When he had not returned later that day, Lisa called him only to be told that he wouldn't be returning. He told her he had filed for divorce, he was keeping their son in Turkey with him, and she should go back to Australia.

Lisa's nightmare had begun. For four years, and beyond she fought to bring her son home.

After fighting the case simultaneously through the Turkish and international courts, and getting in touch with politicians, and doing everything she could legally, she was left with no choice. She had to save her son, and escape Turkey back to Australia. With sixty minutes on her side, she attempted the unimaginable.

Lisa has since written a book about her experience. Her story is one of true bravery.

122 - When you're unsure if you want to stay the primary parent, with Elisabeth Shaw Dec 11, 2018
    Show notes

What happens if you're not sure that you want to be the primary parent anymore?

If you're a regular listener you'll know that I often do "Ask Julia" style episodes, where I try to offer some advice on a particular single mum issue. Recently I got asked this really interesting question... She wrote...

    Hi Julia!

I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your podcast and listening each week. I was wondering if you could do a podcast on single mothers who give up primary custody of their children and the reasons as to why they do it?

I know your podcast is all about empowering single mums to thrive and not just survive but lately, I've been massively struggling with my daughter and have often thought about giving up primary custody for many reasons. I haven't found a lot of support in this area or people I can talk to about being able to change my perspective. I'd love to hear your thoughts or expert advice on single mums who have given up primary custody and how they cope now as the secondary parent or mums who've thought about it but changed their minds and whether they have Mum guilt or feel they made the wrong decision?

    Thank you!

I hope to hear back from you (:

Elisabeth Shaw, CEO of the NSW chapter of Relationships Australia is on the show with me this week to chat about this issue.

    Elisabeth shares her insights on

    • Reasons why people may not want to be the primary parent anymore.
    • The stereotypical belief that as women we think we have to be the primary parent.
    • What may be the wrong reasons for wanting this change.
    • Getting support.
    • Potential impacts of this change on a young child.
    • So much more!

Elisabeth is the CEO of Relationships NSW. She is a clinical and counseling psychologist with extensive experience in child protection, drug and alcohol, sexual assault, women's health, disability, and general counseling services. She has also taught in Masters programs at ACU, UNSW and Newcastle universities in areas including clinical practice, and management and professional ethics, and she routinely presents and publishes work in these areas.
