    "Jump" by Van Halen - 1984 Nov 11, 2018
    Show notes

This week Neil O.U. fights off a case of deja vu and hops back into the hot seat to discuss the 1984 number one hit "Jump" by Van Halen. Lead guitarist Eddie Van Halen's instrumentation and musical stylings had taken a questionable turn in recent years, culminating in the band's only number one hit, whose heavy use of synthesizer was reviled by the other members of the band. The album 1984 would also mark the final appearance of David Lee Roth whose jump kicks and stage antics were admired by millions and sadly missed by dozens of loyal fans. How did the worst song in the band's catalog become their only number one hit? How did Eddie convince the band he was actually the long lost 6th member of DEVO? Hey you! Who said that? All these questions and more will be answered on this week's episode of Single File.

    "Take On Me" by A-ha - 1985 Nov 04, 2018
    Show notes

This week Doctor Delirious returns to the studio for a Single File hat-trick as we grapple with the 1985 number one hit by A-ha, "Take On Me". On the strength of an innovative and ground-breaking music video, Take On Me brought Viking-synth-pop to American shores and took the music charts by storm. Despite being considered a one-hit-wonder in the US, A-ha's music career has successfully continued throughout Europe over the last 30 years. What was the original wacky title of this song? Why is the greaser guy in the video being chased by a pipe-wrench wielding motorcycle gang? What world record is held by the lead singer of A-ha? All these questions and more will be answered on this week's episode of Single File.

    "Ms. Jackson" by OutKast - 2001 Oct 28, 2018
    Show notes

This week Nate from the NotNerd Podcast joins me in an episode for all the baby's momma's momma's as we get real on the 2001 number one hit, Ms Jackson by Outkast. The second single from the album that unquestionably secured the Atlanta based duo a place among classic hip hop artists. Don't let the playful sing-a-long chorus fool you... this song hides a message so dark, you might rethink playing this one at your wedding reception. Is Andre 3000 really an alien? Which prolific musician's financial ruin facilitated the making of this record? Why does the car blow up in the music video? All these questions and more will be answered on this week's episode of Single File!

    "Sunshine Superman" by Donovan - 1966 Oct 20, 2018
    Show notes

This week Kevin Palmer returns to the studio to take a savage journey into the heart of "Sunshine Superman", the 1966 number one hit by Donovan. As the catalyst for the psychedelic rock movement, the father of Ione Skye, and a major inspiration for the Beatles, Donovan is at the center of a pop culture universe so vast and interconnected, there should be a thing called Six Degrees of Donovan. What Beatles song did Donovan supposedly write? What fate befell the Love Syndicate and Dreamworld Earth in the #7 issue of Final Crisis? Would the movie Wayne's World exist if it wasn't for "Sunshine Superman"? All these questions and more will be answered in this weeks episode of Single File.

"Kokomo" by The Beach Boys - 1988 Oct 14, 2018
    Show notes

This week our old pal Johnny Grundo returns to the Cabana as together we cover the 1988 hit "Kokomo" by The Beach Boys from the soundtrack to the movie Cocktail. With a record-breaking 22 year span between number one hits, this upbeat nod to tropical paradise concealed a dark period in the bands career. Despite the recent death of Dennis Wilson, inner turmoil, legal disputes, and the mysterious absence of Brian Wilson, the band spawned a hit so huge, John Stamos joined the band. Where was Brian Wilson anyways? Why does Tom Cruise have such a hard time remembering the ingredients to a simple white wine? Who was watching Michelle while Uncle Jesse was playing the bongos? All these questions and more will be answered on this week's episode of Single File.

"Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke - 2013 Oct 07, 2018
    Show notes

This week Thor Deacon visits the studio to bring a moment of clarity to the 2013 number one hit "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke. This ode to the ambiguity of sexual consent casually slipped Robin Thicke's lengthy R&B career into the spotlight of modern pop music. Shortly after its release, the song was subject to a massive lawsuit that would create a new definition of copyright infringement in the music industry. Did this song really rip off Marvin Gaye? Did Robin Thicke have a grunge phase in the 90s? Who is that guy yelling "whoo!" every eight bars? All these questions and more will be answered in this week's episode of Single File!

"Down Under" by Men At Work - 1983 Sep 30, 2018
    Show notes

This week Detroit artist Sean Nader calls in to the studio to talk about flutes, koalas, and the 1983 number one hit "Down Under" by Men at Work. With its catchy chorus and wacky video, this song quickly became a patriotic anthem near and dear to the people of Australia. When a 2002 lawsuit claimed that the melody was borrowed from a classic children's song, the outcome divided the nation between Men at Work fans and everybody else. What's up with Colin Hay's wonky eye? What are some useful slang term to use when buying bread from a man in Brussels? Who would win in a fight between AC/DC and Men At Work? All these questions and more will be answered on this episode of Single File.

This week Lindsay Deacon visits the studio as we squeeze into our shortest short-shorts to talk about "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", the 1984 number one single by Wham!, the British teen idol duo comprised of musical genius George Michael and also a man named Andrew Ridgeley. Providing the theme song to millions of jazzercise workouts and gasoline fights, George Michael's songwriting and musical talent is unveiled to the world in this upbeat nod to 50's teen pop. What is the hidden meaning behind the word "Jitterbug"? Why didn't anyone know George Michael was gay? What ever happened to Andrew Ridgeley? All these questions and more will be answered on this episode of Single File.
