Silvi Knows: Peter Whittaker Oct 02, 2019
    Show notes

It was 10 years ago when mountaineering legends Peter Whittaker and Ed Viesturs led a group of mostly novice climbers to the summit of Mt. Rainier. The group included NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke and then Seahawks head coach Jim Mora. I was also part of that group. On this week’s Silvi Knows podcast, I sat down with Whittaker to hear some of his stories a decade later. He was 12 years old when he first summited Rainier (32:00) and at the top of his game when he summited Mt. Everest (40:30). Whittaker shares a lot of memories about guiding Goodell up Rainier and the challenges that came with it (10:45). As an elite climber, Whittaker was also impressed with Mora's effort on the 18-mile round trip (21:23). Our conversation goes a little off the rails when we talk about the necessities needed for a successful climb (33:00). Whittaker has climbed Mr. Rainier 254 times and he's not done yet, but for now we'll bask in his memories from 10 years ago and his achievements most climbers can only dream about.

Silvi Knows: Lofa Tatupu Sep 25, 2019
    Show notes

Lofa Tatupu played six NFL seasons, all with the Seahawks, who moved up in the 2005 draft to take the USC linebacker. The scouting reports pegged Lofa as undersized and slow, but he proved them wrong. Tatupu went to the Pro Bowl three times and helped lead the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl. He shares memorable stories about head coaches Mike Holmgren (4:10) and Pete Carroll (27:00) including the days Tatupu played for Carroll at USC (30:50). Tatupu's love for football came at an early age watching his dad, Mosi, who played 14 years in the NFL (20:00) and who also became part of pop culture with a cameo on The Simpsons (23:00). Injuries and multiple concussions cut Tatupu's football career short, but it also steered him toward his new business venture, Zone In - a company that specializes in CBD oil. He talks about its benefits (11:30) which helped him transition to life after football.

Silvi Knows: Jamal Crawford Sep 18, 2019
    Show notes

Jamal Crawford is one of Seattle's favorite sons, not only for what he's accomplished in his 19-year NBA career, but for what he continues to accomplish off the court -- giving back to the community (37:42). We sat down with Crawford in this week's episode of the Silvi Knows podcast to talk about a career that took off during his one year at the University of Michigan. Why he chose the Wolverines (6:00) is just the start of a storied journey he takes us on. From what he believes is his most prestigious award (19:25) to his relationship with Kawhi Leonard (25:00) and Kevin Durant (33:45). Crawford has played for teams in eight NBA cities. He talks about his favorite (10:00) as well as the trades that took their toll on him (30:40). He tells us why he loves social media (22:30) and how growing up in Seattle helped him become the player he still is (40:00) as he prepares to enter his 20th NBA season.

Silvi Knows: Greg Haugen Sep 11, 2019
    Show notes

Greg Haugen made a name for himself in the 1980s and 90s fighting some of the biggest names in boxing. The Auburn, Washington native battled Hector Macho Camacho, Vinny Pazienza, Ray Mancini and one of the most famous champions of all in that era, Julio Cesar Chavez. That Chavez fight was for the WBC Super Lightweight Championship and it still holds the record for the largest paid attendance crowd in boxing history. Haugen talks about all of his big bouts in this week's Silvi Knows podcast. Pazienza (8:00), Camacho (13:00) as well as the rematch with Camacho just three months later (20:00). When Haugen fought Mancini, he challenged him to a winner-take-all bout where the two fighters placed a side bet before climbing into the ring (23:00). It was Haugen's last championship bout against Chavez (25:25) that left him with the biggest regret of his career. Haugen's experiences from that night in front of 133,000 fans in Mexico City (31:00), are memorable and all on this week's podcast.

Silvi Knows: Warren Moon Sep 04, 2019
    Show notes

Warren Moon put up ridiculous numbers in his 23 years of pro football. He totaled over 70,000 passing yards between the NFL and CFL -- just one of the reasons he's the only player to be inducted into both the Pro Football Hall Of Fame and the Canadian Football Hall Of Fame. On this week's podcast, Moon talks about his struggle in the 70's to find a college willing to recruit him to play quarterback (5:00) before Washington came calling (9:25). Moon experienced the same challenge breaking into the NFL, which forced him to start his pro career in the CFL (19:35). He eventually played 17 years in the NFL, experiencing highs and lows, like the epic collapse in Buffalo when his Oilers blew a 35-3 lead in the playoffs (28:00), or the fact he never played in a Super Bowl (28:45). Yet the 9-time Pro Bowler played in the league until he was 44, making him an authority on such things as how to fix the Pro Bowl (33:30), and why the new XFL could be an important part of pro football's future (42:40). He even talks about his brush with Hollywood (49:50). Moon admits having regrets in his career as well as his personal life. We open the podcast talking about his recently-settled sexual harassment lawsuit. All he wants now is to return to a sense of normalcy in both his personal life and his career.

Silvi Knows: WSU head coach Mike Leach Aug 28, 2019
    Show notes

Washington State head football coach Mike Leach is one of the great characters in college football. His inquisitive personality has helped fuel his desire to travel the world over, including his most recent offseason trip to Petra. He talks in depth about that trip on the podcast this week, along with random topics like his belly-flop video that went viral (1:03), his Insurgent Warfare class at WSU (6:00), his experience as a certified scuba instructor (11:10) and his belief in the paranormal (14:46). We also get into his taste in movies and the strict routine he keeps each time he goes to the theater (19:10). When the podcast ended I wanted to do a sequel immediately. Needless to say, I'm already looking forward to it.

Silvi Knows: Former Seahawks quarterback Dave Krieg Aug 23, 2019
    Show notes

Dave Krieg spent 12 of his 19 NFL seasons with the Seahawks and earned a spot in the team's Ring of Honor. Should Dave Krieg be in the Hall of Fame (33:40)? He answers that question and more in this week's episode of Silvi Knows podcast. His love of football began with a Green Bay Packers uniform when he was five years old (6:03). The passion he developed for the sport led to an improbable football career that gained traction at a now-closed Milton College. Krieg talks of his first NFL start, an upset win over the Jets and the New York Sack Exchange (9:29). Krieg played for six teams, calling the 1994 Lions the best team he ever played for (17:13), but the greatest win he ever had as a Seahawk was in Kansas City, despite getting sacked seven times by Derrick Thomas (22:43). After that game, head coach Chuck Knox did something Krieg will never forget (24:00). Krieg vividly remembers getting to within one win of the Super Bowl and losing to a Raiders organization he learned to hate (28:10).

Silvi Knows: Robbie Tobeck Aug 14, 2019
    Show notes

On this week's podcast, Seahawks great Robbie Tobeck talks about his road to the NFL and some of the stories along the way. His high school only offered flag football until his senior year, yet with the help of WSU great Jack Thompson (2:50) and a dunk video, Tobeck earned a scholarship to a Division I program. Former Cougar teammate Drew Bledsoe taught Tobeck how to snap (15:28), which put him on a path to become a center in the NFL, where he even caught a touchdown pass (22:47). Tobeck had a reputation for talking tough (34:45) and backing it up. His years with the Seahawks brought stories of Hall of Famer John Randle (40:35) and Mike Holmgren (45:50) as well as a brush with Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson (47:42). Tobeck is a member of the Seahawks' 35th Anniversary Team.

Silvi Knows: Seahawks punter Michael Dickson Aug 07, 2019
    Show notes

Seahawks punter Michael Dickson made the Pro Bowl in his rookie season last year. He has set the bar high for himself, so how does he improve on being the best punter in the NFC? We sat down with the Australian native on this week’s Silvi Knows podcast and he admits he's still learning the rules of American football.

Silvi Knows: Chip Hanauer Jul 31, 2019

With Seafair celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, it's a good time to appreciate just how much history is in its marquis event - hydroplane racing on this week’s Silvi Knows podcast. No driver has won more Gold Cup titles than Chip Hanauer. But he has also suffered some horrific crashes. Chip talks about the challenges of being in the cockpit on this week’s episode.
