Mel has been rewatching Season 1 of The Crown and felt inspired to cover Prince Edward VIII’s controversial relationship with American socialite Wallis Simpson. History remembers the short-lived king abdicating the throne of England after his family and Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin disapproved of him marrying the 2x divorcee. On the surface, their story appeared incredibly romantic—sacrificing everything for a forbidden love—but was that the whole truth?

In this episode, we discuss the realistic consequences of giving it all up to be with the one you love. We also take a closer look at Edward and Wallis’ moral compasses, questionable decisions and disgraceful politics.

Fifty years before the Brad-Jen-Angelina love triangle, there was Eddie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, and Elizabeth Taylor. In the early 1950s, crooner Eddie Fisher and actress Debbie Reynolds were officially known as “America’s Sweethearts.” They were also best friends with actress Elizabeth Taylor and her husband Mike Todd, and were even in each other’s weddings.

After Mike Todd tragically died in a plane crash, Eddie went to comfort his best friend’s wife (and wife’s best friend) Elizabeth Taylor. He ended up spending the night—and starting an affair that scandalized the nation.

Did Elizabeth feel any remorse for ‘stealing’ her friend’s husband? “I don’t go about breaking up marriages. You can’t break up a happy marriage,” she said. “Debbie’s and Eddie’s never has been.” Join us as we read through the “lore” and history of this infamous love triangle that rocked the end of the 1950s.

They met and fell in love when Sam—a 42-year-old, newly divorced mother of two—made her directorial debut with the film “Nowhere Boy,” starring an up-and-coming, 18-year-old Aaron. Within a year, they were engaged and expecting, and 15 years later, still seem genuinely happy against all odds and expectations.

It was 2004, and our hometown hero, Ben Affleck, and America’s sweetheart, Jennifer Garner, were a Fever Pitch love story when they debuted their relationship at the Red Sox World Series. Fresh off breakups, these two lovebirds moved fast, getting pregnant and married within a year.

Over the next decade, their domestic life was on display daily in tabloids as they raised their three kids together, battling paparazzi and stalkers. We look back at their adorable chemistry up through Ben’s questionable moments—referring to their marriage as “work” in his Oscar acceptance speech, allegedly cheating with the nanny, and his infamous Howard Stern interview comments about how his marriage affected his addiction struggles.

As we compare this relationship with the original “Bennifer,” we can’t help but wonder if the good girl/bad boy trope can ever truly work out in real life.

We’re getting in our time machine and heading back to the Wild West this week to visit Annie Oakley! And if you’re like us, maybe you’ve heard her name before but never really knew who Annie Oakley was. Well, Annie was a world-famous “sharpshooter” known for never missing a target with her rifle. Think Katniss Everdeen, old west style.

Annie Oakley performed across the U.S. and Europe with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show where she soon became a household name. But beyond shooting things with her rifle, she also had a super sweet romance (and meet-cute) with the Irish man Frank Butler.
