34. When F. Scott Fitzgerald Met Zelda Sayre (Part II) *TEASER* Apr 19, 2023

Where did we leave off? Last we saw them, Zelda had an affair with a French aviator, and Scott said their marriage would “never be the same.”

He was correct, as their relationship took dark turns for the worse. Scott befriended Ernest Hemingway in Paris, who told him “Zelda just wants to destroy you.” Zelda’s mental health deteriorated as she and Scott fought, and she entered many mental institutions in the following years.

Yet even while Scott and Zelda became separated over time, they still wrote heartfelt letters to each other for the rest of their lives. Their relationship was far from perfect, but it’s still a love story influencing pop culture, literature (and now us!) to this day.

You may know Gatsby and Daisy from Scott’s legendary novel “The Great Gatsby.” But behind the writing, Scott’s real-life love story with Zelda was even more wild and fascinating. Many of their letters still exist to this day, and with so much to uncover, we’ve split their relationship into two episodes. In part one, we follow the early days of Scott and Zelda’s relationship as they become engaged, break up, marry, and discover the glamorous, intoxicating worlds of New York and Paris.

Phoebe Bridgers is an indie musician from California. Paul Mescal is an actor from Ireland. It was the height of the pandemic, May 2020, when Phoebe and Paul first interacted over Twitter. Phoebe tweeted about Paul’s new show Normal People, and Paul–already a huge fan of Phoebe’s music—couldn’t believe it. Soon after, the two interviewed each other on a video call, blushing and laughing like a first date.

Fans of both Phoebe & Paul fell in love with their love story as they started to date in real life and (“reportedly”) became engaged. But out of nowhere, Phoebe appeared to be dating the comedian Bo Burnham. What happened to Paul?

We’re HUGE fans of Phoebe’s music and I (Kell) have been creepily following details of her life for years. We weave through the wild, confusing, and often toxic relationships that came before Paul (including married men and throuples) then try to piece together what went down between Phoebe & Paul.
