    Side Work Podcast

Veteran waitresses clap back in a new weekly comedy podcast where nothing’s off the table other than the 15 percent tip we just stuffed into our apron. Hosted by Brooke Van Poppelen & Andrea Wallace, the two use their combined 30 plus years of servitude, extensive careers in comedy (while waiting tables), and disdain for entitled Yelp culture to dish about the career that everyone should experience to be a decent human being. Side Work Podcast combines current events, trends in the service industry and food, with hilarious server submitted stories from around the world. Godspeed and Good Tips!

Ep. 33 "The Double Diaper, That Young Palate, and Jelloyd Spencer" Aug 09, 2019
    Show notes

Today we talk voluntary torture: DOUBLES, and discuss the logic behind agreeing to live in the restaurant from morning to night. It's a special sort of exhaustion that only servers can relate to. We read some more Server Submitted Stories and then Jelloyd Spencer stops by the pod den to talk about his "hospitality industry" skills and the correct outlook on life when you bartend at an Austin Powers themed night club. Yeah, baby.

Ep. 32 "Sexy Mister, Dead Eyes, and Julian Velard" Aug 02, 2019
    Show notes

Today's topic of discussion: the myriad of ways you embarrass yourself on the job. Whether it's your fault, a customer making you feel like an idiot, or your fellow co-workers piling on, the nature of the job makes you feel like a real ding-a-ling. Past guest James Dunn sits in for Joselyn and we read some more of your Server Submitted Stories. Then, long time server now turned "Song-tender", Julian Velard joins us to talk about all the ways being a piano karaoke accompanist at a NYC club is like being put right back behind the bar again.

Ep. 31 "Restaurants Are Killing the Planet, and Amber Nelson" Jul 26, 2019
    Show notes

Our resident environmentalist and co-host Joselyn Hughes leads the topic of conversation today! We discuss the jaw dropping statistics regarding the disgusting amount of food and plastic waste restaurants generate in the United States each year. We go over habits we can all incorporate into our personal lives to reduce waste and highlight (small) steps the service industry is taking to do better. Servers, let's save the planet! Then Amber Nelson joins us to speak about years of bartending experience, working reception at a Hollywood gym, and her solo adventures taking herself on dates.

Ep. 30 "Thank You For Being A Friend" Jul 19, 2019
    Show notes

In today's episode we discuss the one thing that makes the service industry bearable: friends. This soul-sucking profession can become an absolute blast when you've got a crew that gets you. On the flip side we talk about the jobs we had where we didn't fit in, how hard it was, and how other servers can go out of their way to make you feel like sh*t, especially when you're the new hire. But once you find your tribe, server buddies are homies for life and they have your back on the job and out in the streets.

Ep. 29 "Killin' Time for a Dime with Drennon Davis" Jul 12, 2019
    Show notes

Working on and around the Fourth of July is pretty much a guaranteed dead time in the service industry which sparked today's conversation about what servers do when it's slooooooowwwwww. We discuss how the attitude and energy of the job quickly shifts into a hostage situation when no one shows up to dine and how it's utter BS that you're forced to clean the restaurant while you're making negative dollars. Then, Drennon Davis drops by the pod den to discuss being a server at a famous comedy club thus launching an ill-fated string of jobs combining comedy with bartending.

You can catch Drennon on NBC's "Bring The Funny" on 7/23 and on his upcoming new podcast with Mike Phirman called BANDTASTIC on Himalaya. Listen to the preview here! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bandtastic-trailer/id1470629744?i=1000443498942

Ep. 28 "Serving Perks, The Dumbest Waiter, and Mitch Bisschop" Jul 05, 2019
    Show notes

We spend a lot of time hating on the job, so today we are clearing our energy as Andrea convinces us of the many perks of having a serving job. A few epic disagreements ensue, but ultimately we all bond over a rat that fell through a Buffalo Wild Wings ceiling onto a diner's table. Then, Mitch Bisschop comes through the pod den to discuss bartending burnout, years of serving the daytime weirdos and how being a late bloomer is not a bad thing when it comes to chasing your dreams.

Ep. 26 "Bad with Money, Mace Face, and Alan Starzinski" Jun 21, 2019
    Show notes

Let's talk money. When you're a server how are you still broke even though your pockets are flush with cash?? We discuss all the ways in which having a serving job could earn you financial freedom..... as long as you don't spend half of your tips at the bar next door, which is exactly what we all do. It's a vicious cycle. Then, Alan Starzinski stops by the pod den to talk about how serving at Applebee's really prepped him for bigger things in life: waiting tables at Dave and Buster's.

Ep. 25 "Summer Jobs, Little Chernobyl, and David Crabb" Jun 14, 2019
    Show notes

Summer jobs means summer money, baby! Today we discuss the sweaty, hectic hustle of seasonal work when restaurants double in size and garden patios around the country stay slammed for three months. But first we go off about a recent epidemic of bad hostesses and "dork font" on menus. Then, David Crabb stops by the pod den to truly horrify and delight us with stories of utter debauchery he witnessed as a bartender and server for nearly sixteen years.

Ep. 24 "Mental Health, Addiction, & Pastries with Alea James" Jun 07, 2019
    Show notes

We recorded this episode at the very end of May during Mental Health Awareness Month but we need awareness every damn day - particularly in the service industry. We go deeper into why this line of work breeds and invites self-destructive behavior, examine our own issues over the years while waiting tables and living that vampire life, AND manage to be funny about it. The good news is there is a real shift in the industry happening with healthier environments being fostered from the top down. AKA chefs are checking their shit and getting sober. Yay! Did you know there are recovery groups specifically for chefs and servers? We talk about that too. Then our dear friend Alea James drops into the pod den as our first official back of house guest but she gets a pass because she did wait tables at an internet cafe before going to culinary school and becoming an uber talented pastry chef.
