Disclaimer: It should also be clear that Jose is not representing the Department of Defense or the US military establishment and that his opinions are only those from his personal/professional standpoint. In this way, he cannot be held liable or in violation of any DoD/US military statutes or regulations that he may not agree with or be held liable or in contempt in any way when he mentioned that this country should be moving to have a "Health Care Act" akin to the Social Security Act, which enables all Americans to have equitable and high-quality access to medical care.

Addendum to episode 96: FIERCE Jul 20, 2020
    Show notes

This is a little audio addendum to episode 96: FIERCE. This podcast has been, from the beginning, a journey of learning how to reach out to others instead of hunkering down, how to change and grow even as this world changes faster than we can keep up with it.

The conversations I’ve had over the past four months have inspired and challenged me, and this was never truer than in my conversations with the thirteen incredible authors of FIERCE: Essays by and About Dauntless Women. FIERCE is a marvelous book, and I hope you’ll check it out for yourself.

After the FIERCE episodes went live, it came to my attention that we’d made an error that needed to be corrected. In this short bonus episode, Edissa Nicolás-Huntsman speaks to her use of pronouns for Taté in episode 96, and Taté Walker explains what it means to be Two Spirit.

Episode 99: My Fabulous Foolproof Formula for Fame and Fortune Jul 16, 2020
    Show notes

Long before this pandemic, entrepreneur John Hall was rethinking what it meant to be successful in one's career. In this COVID-19 economy, American cultural historian Lawrence R. Samuel, Ph.D is continuing that conversation with an even broader lens. In this penultimate episode of Shelter in Place season one, I share insights by John and Lawrence, as well as the things that have mattered most on the journey of letting go of the success I thought I had to have.

John Hall is the co-founder and president of Calendar, a leading scheduling app that he’s convinced will change how we manage and invest our time. He authored the best-selling book “Top of Mind,” published by McGraw-Hill. John was a recipient of the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Best Emerging Company and was recognized as one of the Business Journals’ Top 100 Visionaries.

With permission, I quoted his story in Forbes, "The Trend Toward A New Definition Of Success And Why It's Important To You."

Lawrence R. Samuel, Ph.D., is the founder of AmeriCulture, a Miami- and New York City-based consultancy dedicated to translating the emerging cultural landscape into business opportunities. He holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Minnesota and is the author of many books. I quoted his story in Psychology Today with permission, "How the Pandemic May Change Our Idea of Success."

Episode 98: What the Devil is Capable Of Jul 14, 2020
    Show notes

Bay Area poet Vernon Keeve III lost his father during this pandemic. That loss--and that relationship--was a complicated one. His father was a Southern Baptist preacher and lawyer who for most of his life did not extend to his son the grace he was preaching. He suffered from dementia for two years before his death, and was only just beginning to make amends in their relationship before he lost the ability to do so.

In this final conversation of season one, Vernon shares how he's come to terms with his personal history, and used both the past and the present to inspire his writing.

You can find Vernon's book, Southern Migrant Mixtape, here.

You can find The Bay Area Writing Project here.

I mentioned C.S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters in this episode, which I highly recommend. Casey Cep wrote a great story about it for the New Yorker back in 2013, which you can find here.

    Episode 97: The Scream Jul 13, 2020
    Show notes

As schools across the nation announce plans for distance learning or part-time attendance in the fall, working parents seem to not be factored into the equation. Smitten Kitchen's food writer Deb Perleman voices the scream we've all been holding inside in her New York Times story, "In the Covid-19 Economy, You Can Have a Kid or a Job. You Can’t Have Both."

Thanks to Deb Perelman for permission to quote this excellent story, which I highly recommend you read here--whether or not you have kids.

    Episode 96: Fierce Jul 11, 2020
    Show notes

This week I’ve been sharing my conversations with the writers of FIERCE: Essays by and About Dauntless Women*. On today’s Story Saturday, you’ll finally get to hear from all thirteen of them.

FIERCE won the Book Life Prize and the Nautilus Book Award. Publisher’s Weekly will be featuring the book in a story this month. What makes FIERCE unique is that the women who wrote these essays all have a personal connection to the historical women they wrote about. When Karyn Kloumann of Nauset press dreamed up the idea for this book, she realized that this connection would be crucial in helping both the writers and readers understand why these stories matter today. But it’s also created a community of women who admire, celebrate, and encourage each other.

You can purchase a copy of the award-winning anthology, FIERCE: Essays by and About Dauntless Women here.

Trigger warning: while there’s nothing graphic in this episode, some of these women have been through some hard stuff. There are mentions of self-harm, genocide, and rape. But there’s a lot of good stuff, too.

*ADDITIONAL NOTES: Taté’s pronouns are they/them (see addendum bonus recording at shelterinplacepodcast.info to hear this discussed in greater detail by Edissa Nicolás-Huntsman and Taté. I have included the correct pronouns in brackets in the episode transcript.

The discussion on "Origins" opens in media res with Taté talking about their first experience in a sweat lodge. “The house” that Taté mentions refers to the group home where Taté was living at the time of this story. They give further context to this experience later in the episode.
