    Episode 26: Q&A Discerning Women Teachers & Authors Jan 18, 2017
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message! (I can't directly respond, but I can answer questions and share comments in upcoming episodes!

There are a lot of Christian voices out there dropping books and conferences like toddlers drop food at the dinner table. Some of it seems so good, but sometimes the people that we’ve grown to love or follow go south. Or at least seem to be on a whole new trajectory. How do we become wise women who can identify bad theology? Today Andy Hlushak joins the SPF Podcast to give 8 great filtering questions we can ask to be discerning women.

Question and Answer: Which Women Teachers Can We Trust?

I recently received a question about how to discern what is good and biblical when looking to purchase Bible studies and books by Christian women. "I know critical thinking is what is truly needed, but what red flags can we look for?"

What a great question! So I brought my husband on this episode who gives us 8 things to look for to make us discerning women.

Before the questions - you can always go to your pastors/elders at your church. They should have good recommendations and discernment to help guide you to a study or book.

AND - this applies to all bible studies and book authors, not just women - the question received was specifically asking about women teachers.
Which women can we trust? Ask these questions:
    1. How do they view Scripture?
    2. How do they view the sovereignty of God?
    3. What is their reputation?
    4. Who are her friends who are her enemies?
    5. Is she anthropocentric or theocentric?
    6. Is her worldview to change or discover?
    7. How do they apply the gospel to all of life? Or are they dualistic, separating faith and life?
    8. Where do they fall in history?

    If you feel overwhelmed:

    • Start with Scripture! You don't need a Bible study to study the Bible!
    • Go old school - check out old Christian authors who have proved faithful and finished well. Puritans like Jonathan Edwards and William Bradford; Charles Spurgeon.
    • Feel freedom to stop a study if you think it's not a biblically sound choice after starting it.

Episode 25: Is the Bible True? Jan 13, 2017
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message! (I can't directly respond, but I can answer questions and share comments in upcoming episodes!

What if someone asked you, “Why do you believe the Bible is true?” How would you answer? There is more to believing the Bible than our personal experience or blind faith. Today we will help answer the question Why I believe the Bible as we look at 2 Peter 1 and even explore some mathematics.

The Bible is True, not just because of Personal Experience

After attending Voddie Baucham's workshop, "Why I Believe the Bible is True" at the Christian Home Educators of Colorado Conference in 2014, my faith and confidence grew just by being able to articulate why I believe the Bible.

Check out Voddie's talk here: Why I Choose to Believe the Bible

“The Bible is true because it is a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eye witnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses. They report to us supernatural events that took place in fulfillment of specific prophecies and claim to be divine rather than human in origin. ”
    — Voddie Baucham

    Based on 2 Peter 1:16-21

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son,[i] with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

2017 is here and you’ve probably been met with a million messages to be the change you want to see this year. Wait, can we be the change? What’s the Bible say about this? Today we are looking at 2 Corinthians 5 about our true nature and give Ghandi a little run for his money. Plus learn my favorite way to defeat a cold.

    Can I Be The Change?

New Year's means New You and you can be the change you want to see in the world! Remember, that we must hold these statements up to the Truth of God; shed light on what is real, otherwise we will be trapped in a cycles of failure, performance, achievement, and humanism.

According to 2 Corinthians 5:17 change start by Jesus taking away our old nature and giving us a new nature. Our old selves before Christ could do nothing but sin and be self focused on pleasure. Now, in Christ, He changes our hearts to obey Him - and want to obey Him - and makes us free from sin and death.

New You starts with Jesus Christ and if we want to see change in us, we must look to Him and fight sin.

Today is a special episode where my husband and I invite you into the background of our Christmas traditions, what makes this holiday a holy day, and discuss the forgotten line in Joy to the World. It’s festive, it’s fun, it’s a Christmas spectacular podcast.

    Fireside Chat with Andy Hlushak

Discover some of our childhood Christmas traditions and what we are doing with our family now and learn a great way to form opinions and traditions by some learned wisdom from an old guy with a sweet mustache. This really is such a fun, cheery Christmas episode. We hope you laugh a lot and learn about the JOY given to this world.

Now I want you to know, I was making this long before Miss Trisha Yearwood posted this but she's got a little video and great instructions - so take it away Trisha! Here's the recipe for the toffee bark (sans graham crackers -ew Andy).

My TWO changes - don't use a whole cup o brown sugar. You just need 3/4 cup. Save at least one tooth from a cavity this Christmas. Good luck to all the others! ;) And sprinkle some chopped walnuts on top to balance the sweet.

New City Church Sermon - Now is the Time by Aaron Carlson

    Verses

    Romans 13:11-14

    Ephesians 2:8-10

    Ephesians 4:17-24

Three Ways to Practice Living with Advent in Mind

    1. Teach your children or a friend at church the truth about sin. Read Romans 13:11-14 and discuss it with each other. Ask questions about each verse.
    2. Repent of your sin - if you know there are sins you make provisions for, if you know there are areas of darkness you are holding on to, repent and turn from those things and believe that God has forgiven you to walk in a manner worthy of Him
    3. Fight sin with a friend - expose your weaknesses to a friend to help you fight sin together. Let her pray for you and encourage you with truth. My friend Lindsay helped me in the social media area - I told her my struggle a couple years ago and she did not excuse it - like ooh that’s hard for everyone. But she acknowledged it took my focus away from the Lord. She told me the truth of how that must change my day when I am distracted from God and she prayed for me.

    What is the "Man Code?"

Ephesians 5:33 says, “Let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband." The "Man Code" not exposing negative or weak things of our husbands in the public sphere. There is a general set of topics that are safe to steer clear of talking about in public. They should be reserved for just you and your husband out of respect for him. There are four areas that men generally like to keep quiet about:

    1. finances
    2. health
    3. feelings
    4. failures

We show great respect to our husbands when we try and understand these sensitive topics that we can avoid in public conversations. Respect is discovering what honors our husbands and what dishonors him. Respecting our husbands actually serve to advance the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Two Solutions for Respecting the Man Code

    1. Talk to your husband about the issue in private and come to a resolution

    2. Ask for permission from your husband if you want to share that information with someone else

Declare me innocent from hidden faults.

let them not have dominion over me!
    Then I shall be blameless,
    and innocent of great transgression.

Episode 17: The Five Solas of the Reformation (and how to teach them) Oct 31, 2016
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message! (I can't directly respond, but I can answer questions and share comments in upcoming episodes!

There are five "solas" that represent the five foundations of Christianity brought about in the 16th century through the Reformation. When we know them and teach them we gain wisdom, understanding, faith, and a biblical worldview for the glory of God. Today we are talking about the five sola’s and five ways to teach them, to ourselves, our children, and others.

Hey! Thanks for listening - make this podcast more accessible by rating and review on itunes! It would bless my socks - and blessed socks are very nice ;)

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcast-she-proves-faithful/id1116242133?mt=2

    The Five Solas

    Sola Scriptura (“Scripture alone”)

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16-17

"I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you." Psalm 119:11

"For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." Romans 15:4

    Sola Fide (“faith alone”)

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." Ephesians 2:8-10

    Sola Gratia (“grace alone”

"In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight." Ephesians 1:5-8

    Solus Christus (“Christ alone”)

"For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth." 1 Timothy 2:5-6

"He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son." Colossians 1:13

Soli Deo Gloria (“to the glory of God alone”)

"And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Colossians 3:17

How Do We Teach the Sola's?
