Sound doctrine is critical to a Christian's faith and life. How we love, how we live, how we act, how we worship - is all downstream from what we believe; and if it's not rooted in the sound teachings of Scripture, it's easy to go astray in the practical out workings of living. Today I am sharing three ways sound doctrine protects us.

SPF 286: Discerning Zeal - Two Things Passion Must be Rooted In Apr 26, 2025
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message! (I can't directly respond, but I can answer questions and share comments in upcoming episodes!

According to Noah Webster, Zeal is the Passionate ardor in the pursuit of any thing; it is an eagerness of desire to accomplish or obtain some object. Zeal that accomplishes good and godly things must be rooted in knowledge and be disciplined. Today we will throw off impulsive fervor and learn why knowledge is critical when living zealously for the Lord.

    --------------

Zeal for God must be rooted in knowledge and discipline.

    Francis Turretin

Four reasons why our zeal must be rooted in knowledge:

    1. That we may distinguish truth from falsehood, as there may be zeal for error and false doctrine as well as for that which is true;
    2. That we may understand the comparative importance of things, so as not to make much of what is little, and make little account of what is great;
    3. That we may prosecute and defend the truth in the right way, with prudence, firmness, fidelity, and meekness;
    4. That our zeal may have the right object, not our own interest and reputation, but the glory of God and the salvation of men.

Discipline directs our passions back to God's will. We lay down our ways before God and direct our zeal through His will.

SPF 284: A Prayer to Help You Hold Your Tongue (Practical faith for marriage, parenting, and more!) Mar 14, 2025
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message! (I can't directly respond, but I can answer questions and share comments in upcoming episodes!

Have you ever been in a situation where you opened your mouth when maybe you should have bit your tongue instead? James says if you can tame your tongue you can bridle your whole body. This might be impossible this side of heaven, but there is a prayer in Psalm 39 to help us hold our tongues and walk in wisdom especially in the hight of our emotions.

    ----------------------------------------------------

Long into today with a personal story of God's grace to our family!

You can skip to the topic starting at min 8:10

    Plug in carbon detector: https://a.co/d/3vIjtcT

    ----------------------------------------------------

This podcast episode is so practical for our marriages, parenting, and relationships with other people. It will help us remember to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.

    ----------------------------------------------------

“Perhaps he feared that if he began to talk at all, he would be sure to speak amiss, and, therefore, he totally abstained. It was an easy, safe, and effectual way of avoiding sin, if it did not involve a neglect of the duty which he owed to God to speak well of his name.” (Spurgeon)

"Lord, make us to consider this, that we may secure mansions in the house not made with hands." Matthew Henry

"Watchfulness and resolution, in the strength of God's grace, will do more towards the bridling of the tongue than we can imagine, though it be an unruly evil." Matthew Henry

When we are vexed and troubled and our emotions are mounting up, it is a good and wise thing for us to hit the pause button by asking the Lord to remind us of our brevity - that like Psalm 90 says, "teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."

SPF 283: How the Daily Little Battles Build Virtue Mar 01, 2025

Johnathan Edwards said, "True virtue never appears so lovely as when it is most oppressed;" Today I am sharing how Opposition to virtue is grounds for glory - That all these uphill battles in our lives really matter and are cultivating lasting virtue in us, something more precious than gold.

    -------------------------------------------------

I don't have many show notes today, but here is the quote from my friend that I mentioned in the podcast (I had already recorded but thought I'd leave it here as a bonus):

St. Gregory of Nyssa. (from The Life of Moses):
"No Good has a limit in its own nature but is limited by the presence of its opposite, as life is limited by death and light by darkness … Just as the end of life is the beginning of death, so also stopping in the race of virtue marks the beginning of the race of evil."

And here are the Jonathan (not Thomas ha!) Edwards quotes:

"“True virtue never appears so lovely as when it is most oppressed; and the divine excellency of real Christianity is never exhibited with such advantage as when under the greatest trials; then it is that true faith appears much more precious than gold, and upon this account is "found to praise and honour and glory.” - Jonathan Edwards

“True virtue does not arise from self-love or from any earth-bound selflessness… but from a desire to see God’s glory displayed above all.” - J. Edwards

SPF 282: What's the Deal with Manifestation? (And How to Think Biblically about our Desires) Feb 07, 2025
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message! (I can't directly respond, but I can answer questions and share comments in upcoming episodes!

What is manifestation? How has this practice crept into the church? Can we really just declare something and make it happen? How do we pray for things we want? Today I am sharing about the trouble with manifestation and how to think biblically about our personal desires, goals, and prayers.

    ---------------------------

Manifestation is the practice coming out of the New Thought movement which has similiaries to New Age beliefes where you bring your desires, goals, or intentions into reality through focused thought, belief, and action and even your spoken word.

Manifestation is troubling for many reasons - the biggest being it leads people away from their true need of Christ. It teaches that all we need and desire can be found in our own power. It teaches that we are little gods with power and authority to create and call into existence the things that are not.

It drives us away from God because it falsely teaches we have the ability and power to create our reality and that our lives are about our will. It tears down trust in God.

It is so good for us to return to the Word each day and to get our understanding about God and our world and our lives from the Bible.

Prayer shows our dependence on God, helps us put our trust in him, helps us not lean on our own understanding, and pray allows us to present our requests to a good, holy, God.

SPF 281: How to Enjoy Life & Pursue Christ (Is it really an issue of balance?) Jan 31, 2025
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message! (I can't directly respond, but I can answer questions and share comments in upcoming episodes!

How are we enjoy the temporal joys of life? Are they really all a vanity, or chasing after the wind? Today I am sharing how we can faithfully enjoy the good gifts God gives while also heading the wisdom of finding our purpose and delight in Christ alone.
Let's talk about the enjoyment of temporary pleasures and pursuing the eternal. Are they at odds with each other? Is there a balance to strike between the two? And what's the bigger picture?
    Scripture References:
    James 1:16-18
    1 Timothy 6:17-19
    Ecclesiastes 9:7
    Ecclesiastes 2
"So when we consider the good things, the temporal blessings on earth, here is the wisdom - these things are gifts from God to be enjoyed by us and be a blessing, to fill us with thankfulness and to be shared, and used in godly ways." - SPF
"The wisdom is to not make our focus and the meaning of our life the pursuit of pleasure - while good gifts from God are to be for our enjoyment, they are not what we chase down. It's not where we get our meaning, it's not how we solve our problems." - SPF
""If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world." C.S. Lewis

SPF 280: Overwhelmed & Anxious by Too Much Input Jan 25, 2025
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message! (I can't directly respond, but I can answer questions and share comments in upcoming episodes!

The internet has made so many things better. But along with our ability to constantly access information, we can hit a point of input overload, leading to overwhelm and even a dullness of hearing. How can we prove faithful with the availability of constant input via the world wide web? Today I am sharing three ways to grow in our discernment when it comes to all the input from the internet.
    Too Much Input Can...
    1. Make it difficult to discern everything
    2. Desensitized and distract
    3. Drive us toward overwhelm and anxiety
    How to Grow in Discernment:

    1. Always be going to the ultimate authority on all matters - God's Word in the Bible.
      1. Hebrews 5:11-14
    2. Cut through the input by understanding what the Lord's will is
      1. Ephesians 5:6-17

"The best thing we can do is not just throttle the amount of input from the internet we consume each day, but to make sure we are getting input from the source of all truth and goodness: God's Word."

SPF 278: Mirth Through Faith (How to Cultivate a Merry Heart) Dec 14, 2024
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message! (I can't directly respond, but I can answer questions and share comments in upcoming episodes!

Charles Spurgeon once preached "Such merry hearts have a continual feast." Where does a merry heart come from and how can we have a truly "merry" Christmas this season?
But I believe as Christians, there's always a reason to celebrate and that we can cultivate a merry heart and mirth by doing two things:

    1. believing in God's promises and
    2. rejoicing and their fulfillment.

The believing part makes our hearts merry

And the rejoicing is our audible mirth.
