How can you introduce dogs to each other?

In today's podcast episode, we are diving into safely introducing dogs and the considerations you can have in mind as you work toward introducing a new dog into your home or dogs that may be spending time together.

How can your emotions and behaviour have an impact
What can you do if you feel you aren't confident in orchestrating the introduction
Identifying whether your dog is ready or prepared for an introduction
Setting the scene to maintain safety and allow freedom of communication

Making sure you have considered the set up and the process of preparing them for the interaction gradually. We provide examples (including with other animals!).

There are so many situations where knowing the best approach is essential to the success of the introduction. There is no rush and be sure to have safe guards in place that ensure the introduction happens in the way you want it to vs. a spontaneous interaction that occurs due to a failure of set up, such as a barrier breakdown, etc.

Introducing your new puppy to an adult or senior dog, into a multi-animal and multi-dog household, as well as introducing a new rescue or rehome into your home can go smoothly when you're able to set the energy, set the expectations, and minimise the opportunity for poor decisions.

Every situation will flex dependent on the variables and some dogs will require much slower introductions than others. Listen in for our top tips to introducing dogs and let us know what you think!

When you are looking to change your dog's behaviour is your dog being:

Pulled to do the behaviour?
Pushed to do the behaviour?

Your answer to the question will help you recognise whether or not you're on the right path to transformation with your dog. In training, there is no need to use force, deprivation or intimidation to achieve effect, long-lasting results.

In today's episode, we're talking about tools that are sometimes advised (by well-meaning people) that are often not the best or most effective solution for your dog. It is important to understand the process and how your dog may perceive the use of a tool in their training.

WIth every interaction you have with your dog, it is also important to aim to pull your dog toward the appropriate choices and decisions in your training.

Setting really clear expectations is important with family members to set your dog up for success (and you!). Let’s face it, it can be really frustrating when everyone has their own opinions and thoughts on how training should happen and what is acceptable and what isn’t acceptable.

Providing a cost (what is the consequence if they do something you don’t want or do want) and
Shaping them into interacting with your dog in the best way

are all really key strategies with family and friends.
