    Show notes

In recognition of Black History Month, we are rereleasing this podcast to recognise the black sewists in the Sewover50 community. Carol's podcast was published in July 2020 and listeners love her work and her sewing journey.

Carol or Anncie2001, is our next Sewover50 stalwart that kindly gave her time for this podcast. Her sewing story is compelling and heartwarming.

Carol hosts a private Facebook Sewing group called Carol's Sewing Corner and a youtube channel and a blog - G-CAS dot net. Carol is self employed and had a sewing business for 12 years.

You'll hear Carol's excitement when she took her first sewing classes. She's sewn for her son and is proud of the clothes she made him. That's why her tailoring skills are embedded in her tutorials and sewing advice. Keep an ear out for her Elmo robe story.

Carol continues to champion diversity through the Black Makers Matter Coalition.

Autumn Sewing Celebration Feb 07, 2021
    Show notes

This is the first online sewing conference style event developed by the Australian Sewing Guild (ASG).

In 2020 the ASG worked hard and developed online workshops and sewing challenges to further people's sewing skills.

Early bird tickets are available to the first 125 participants when tickets go on sale today. There are 14 presenters from a range of industries and practices to keep ASG members interest both on the day and for 6 months after this event. The big plus is the presenters will be available on the day to take audience questions at the time their video presentations are launched.

There is a live Zoom presentation with Pam Holland and at the end of the day there is a live Zoom celebration for all participants and presenters to round off such a huge day for everyone.

Don't feel alone while you watch each presentation as you sew your own projects at home. There will be ASG volunteers to give you a virtual hand or advice on the day #askasghelp.

Participants will also get a virtual show bag with discounts from industry partners and our presenters.

Make sure you can make it to the cocktail hour at the end of the Autumn Sewing Celebration. Participants will receive recipes for ASG named cocktails and mocktails as well as a marsala chai tea recipe. Come celebrate with your online sewing friends on 27 March 2021. We hope to see you there.

Elaine is a Sewover50 follower and she gives her perspective about Black History Month. She sees that she wants to know more about Black History both in the US and in her home country in the UK. Black History Month in the UK is recognised in October each year and she's suggested listeners go to Black History Month UK website and Black Poppy Rose .

Elaine began following Sewover50 when it was first started because she has learnt about Sewover50 through joining the Sewcialists. Elaine refers to her sewing machines as her toys and she's been able to sew her designer inspired dreams as a Minerva Maker.

Elaine recognises that she has found her sewing community through Sewover50 and enjoys the connection with sewists who are over 50 and want to stay visible.

    #bhmpatterndesigners Feb 01, 2021
    Show notes

The Black History Month Pattern Designer Challenge (#BHMPatternDesigners) was established in February 2019 by Nateida of SewNaturalDane. Nateida decided to created this challenge due to the lack of representation she saw in the sewing community that highlighted Black Pattern Designers, as well as black owned fabric companies and knitting designers. February is Black History Month in the United States and it's also Nateida's birthday month!

Rule 1: must tag both Nateida (SewNaturalDane) and Keira (IslandSewcialist) on Instagram and you must use the hashtag #BHMPatternDesigners in order for your entry to be counted. If you do not tag SewNaturalDane or IslandSewcialist AND use the hashtag your entry will not be counted.

Rule 2: use any pattern from a black designer

Rule 3: your make must be made and completed in February 2021

    Meet Lindzeanne Jan 21, 2021
    Show notes

Lindsay Anne is an English literature teacher by day, self-taught hand-stitcher by night living in Tokyo Japan. Growing up, Lindsay was always described as the "creative one".

Lindsay suggests that new starters should use what they have at hand. Machine thread is what Lyndsay uses for her embroidery pieces. The important thing is to start!

Because of the pandemic, there are less fabrics Lindsay can use for her sewing.

She's a teacher from the States living in Japan and loving what the world has provided her with.

This is the first mending podcast for 2021. There are many mending and sewing save podcasts we've published in 2020 so make sure you listen to them if mending and saving textiles is your goal.
