SENDING THE WOLFE Returns Next Tuesday!
Feb 06, 2018
Hi friends!
SENDING THE WOLFE is taking the week of this week to do some work behind the scenes but we will be back next Tuesday, February 13 with Mark Ellis and GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM. There are a lot of exciting things in the works so stay tuned!
In the meantime, take the week to catch up on the episodes that have already been released and we'll see you next... Oh. Um... See you next week!
Today is a very fun and exciting day: Today is Hector Navarro day on SENDING THE WOLFE!
You may know Hector from Geek & Sundry, Hyper RPG or DC All Access like I did, so you can imagine my surprise when he selected Walt Disney's SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS as his movie for the show. What I quickly learned, however, is that Hector's passion for animation spans his entire life and our conversation about the medium is one of my favorites.
I was a bit worried that people would see "Walt Disney" and "SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS" and not listen to the episode but I am here to tell you that that would be a big mistake. Today's talk spans almost a century of Disney feature animation, that legacy, superheroes and Superman, fairy tales, cynicism, and so much more. I learned so much from this conversation and I think you will too.
Speaking for fairy tales and cynicism, if you're interested in reading my take on CINDERELLA in a woke and modern age, here is a link to the article "In Defense of the Fairy Tale: Does CINDERELLA Work In 2015?" that was originally published on Nerdist.
If you liked today's episode, please rate and review SENDING THE WOLFE on your podcast app of choice! Or, if you want to support the show further, check out the Patreon campaign where there are exclusive mini episodes, live movie watchalongs, giveaways and lots more each month.
OK, sure, it's only been a week since the last full episode where Marc Bernardin and I explored the exploitation classic THE TERMINATOR, but still, the sentiment remains. And, incase you didn't notice by my THE FORCE AWAKENS paraphrase, it's STAR WARS week here on SENDING THE WOLFE! Just a few days after Episode 8: THE LAST JEDI hit theaters last week, today I am pleased to bring you a deep dive into the one that started it all, A NEW HOPE, with LA Times entertainment reporter Jen Yamato.
A few things before we get started: First, there are no THE LAST JEDI spoilers in today's episode but an extra long mini dedicated to Rian Johnson's divisive new offering will be available for $5+ Patreon subscribers this Thursday. And between us, a little droid told me that the mini *might* be dropping a whole day early as a little holiday treat and a big thank you for supporting the show. But you didn't hear it from me!
Next, today's episode is a discussion of A NEW HOPE and many of the industry changing things that came as a result. But it is not a nitty-gritty debate about what's cannon and what isn't, or an analysis of the inner workings of the lore of the greater STAR WARS universe. No, today's show is a conversation reflecting on A NEW HOPE specifically and all of the things it has come to symbolize: modern fantasy storytelling, the use of practical effects, blockbuster movies, pop art and cultural relevance, the differences between "best" and "favorite," the cyclical nature of the STAR WARS saga, and lots of other topics in between.
I am hopeful that Episode 4 of SENDING THE WOLFE (guys, I didn't even plan that!) is enjoyable for STAR WARS enthusiasts, general cinephiles, and pop culture junkies alike. And, as always, I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it.
This week on SENDING THE WOLFE, I am thrilled and pleased to welcomes CASTLE ROCK scribe and FATMAN ON BATMAN co-host Marc Bernardin! Enjoy as we explore what happens when acclaim meets iconic in James Cameron's 1984 pop culture classic THE TERMINATOR. For a little exploitation movie that launched several of the biggest careers in Hollywood, it's kind of incredible at how profound and fortuitous this movie turned out to be, don't you think?
And, as always, don't forget the mini-episode that lands exclusively on Patreon this Thursday for $5+ subscribers. THE TERMINATOR franchise is often credited as showcasing one of the most exciting and badass female characters in movie history, the mother of the revolution Sarah Connor, portrayed by Linda Hamilton. But does Sarah become a hero because of or in spite of her femininity?
