Week 5 quick reaction: A game that offers mixed reactions for Seahawks fans Oct 08, 2018
    Show notes

The Seahawks had more than their share of opportunities to come away with the victory in this game up 31 to 24 going into the fourth quarter. The Rams even blew an extra point attempt to allow Seattle to hold the lead even deeper into the fourth quarter. But the Seahawks weren't able to respond to a Los Angeles field goal that put the team ahead 33-31 in what would ultimately lead to the final score.

Clinton Bonner joins the show to fill in for Adam and he and Brandan break down the turning point in the game when some untimely penalties pushed them out of field goal range. They also look at the moments leading up to the Rams going for it on fourth down at the end of the game to solidify the victory.

Ultimately there's a lot to be excited about even in the loss, but it still feels as though the team let this one get away even though many expected that Seattle wouldn't be able to go toe-to-toe with the high powered Rams offense. Even in the loss the Seahawks are solidifying their identity on offense, but this week maybe it was just too much to ask of this young defense to contain all of the weapons on the other side of the ball.

221: Even in AZ winning is better than losing, how the Seahawks take on the Rams without ET3, KJ, or Kendricks Oct 04, 2018
    Show notes

Coming out of the 20-17 win against the Cardinals, an unlikely position group is getting some leaguewide recognition. The Seahawks offensive line was highlighted by NFL.com as one of the top five units in the league this last week. Adam and Brandan take a look at just how little Russell Wilson had to worry about getting hit in this game. With Pocic on his way back to being healthy, they look at how the Seahawks are approaching it considering the relative success they've had with this particular group of five players over the past two weeks.

The loss of Earl Thomas will have an impact, but which player injury will have the more long-term impact for the Seahawks. Will Dissly has on the brink of having a breakout rookie season, but could the prior injury of Jimmy Graham provide some optimism for Seahawks fans that the Montana native can return to the player we saw through the first quarter of the season.

Looking ahead to the matchup with the Rams, it's going to be a significant challenge against a team averaging around 35 points a game through their first four games and a team that put up big numbers in Seattle last season. The loss of Thomas right before this game will have an impact, but should Seahawks fans be as concerned that KJ Wright will continue to be out especially with Mychal Kendricks now out indefinitely from his suspension from the NFL? John in Louisville emails in to provide some helpful pointers for the offense in the matchup with the Rams.

After the break, the guys take a look at the team after the first quarter of the season and project forward on what would need to happen to contend for a playoff spot. An email to the show from Nathan shows that even a few days out after a win, it's still maddening how one play call in particular shifted the game and impacted the career of Earl Thomas.

Closing out the show, Adam has two drop a 'do better' on two sports analysts he deeply respects and Brandan congratulates the few people who were able to find the audio of an historic first in NFL sports media. Better at life honors go to a team of scientists who are taking the first steps to preventing Armageddon and to our Seahawks kicker who reminds us that winning continues to be a better option than losing while helping our quarterback be one of the ultimate winners among the Seattle franchise quarterbacks.

Week 4 quick reaction: Arizona is the LOB's graveyard Oct 01, 2018
    Show notes

It was a costly victory as the Seahawks came away with a 20-17 win over the Cardinals. To divide the game into parts of frustration and excitement, the frustration wins out especially when considering a goose egg on 3rd downs, the inability to get a consistent pass rush, missing two field goals and losing Earl Thomas to what was likely his last time in a Seahawks uniform. Strangely it happens on the same field that Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman played their last games with the team.

To see Russell Wilson lead the game winning drive and have Janikowski kick the last second field goal, it seemed to bring more of a feeling of relief than joy. Chris Carson sat out the game due to injury and Mike Davis gave us a 2nd straight 100-yard game. He even did it on 10 fewer carries and scored the Seahawks only two touchdowns of the game.

Seattle, on the defensive side of the ball, ultimately was able to keep David Johnson in check. Josh Rosen had little help from his receivers with multiple drops, and special teams was equally frustrating as the two missed field goals by Dawson matched the misses by Seattle.

The Seahawks return home this week to take on the Rams. It was going to be a test with a healthy Earl Thomas leading the secondary, but if they can manage to put defensive backs instead of linebackers on the Rams wide receivers they'll be a step ahead of Minnesota. If they can pull off a win, it could really make some heads spin and show us all that this team isn't ready to accept a fate that so many were predicting for the Seahawks in the offseason.

220: Cowboys recap, Rosen to lead Cardinals, and a foolproof plan to take advantage of QB hits Sep 27, 2018
    Show notes

We start the show with some frustrating news that keeps cropping up in social media with fake player news coming fast and furious this week. Adam and Brandan look back and some of the biggest highlights from the win over the Cowboys. Going through some of the stats from the game, Russell Wilson has been getting the ball out faster from a statistical perspective, but Adam isn't buying that anything has changed apart from him having more protection and plays that don't require as much time to develop.

Part of the protection includes the return of D.J. Fluker and he showed an impact in the game this week and Ifedi was able to have a solid game as well only giving up three pressures on the day. Russell Wilson is getting more freedom to control the tempo of the game and one example was the Seahawks first touchdown to Jaron Brown to put the Seahawks on the board in the first half.

The Seahawks go back on the road this week for the third time in four games, but to a road location that has been historically favorable in Arizona. The Cardinals are starting their rookie quarterback for the first time this week. Had Arizona actually put Josh Rosen into the game sooner against the Bears this past weekend, they likely would have beat Chicago, because Sam Bradford was awful. He was able to take advantage of some early mistakes last weekend and then the Bears defense shut them down.

If you're going to the game be sure to check out the Seahawks Road Crew page for the Sea Hawkers gathering down in Arizona. Check out seahawkerspodcast.com/tickets if you need tickets for the game. Hopefully the 12s will continue to show up on the road in that stadium.

In the pickem league, the guys go over the latest standings, and even in a week where there were a lot of surprises, there were people getting double digit wins. One of our pickem league champions emails in to challenge Adam about his gameday attire to suggest it may also be considered of the hobo variety. Closing out the show with do better, Adam looks at some of the latest USA Today power rankings. Brandan calls out some flopping quarterbacks and that leads to a discussion of a foolproof gamepan to take advantage of how the referees are calling penalties. Better at life honors this week go to the Mars rover and to this week's 12 flag raiser Kam Chancellor.

Week 3 quick reaction: The Seahawks should consider paying Earl Thomas Sep 24, 2018
    Show notes

The Seahawks get the 24-13 win over the Cowboys in their Week 3 home opener. With so much talk of Earl Thomas continuing as he sat out a couple days of practice this past week, he showed up big in a game against a team that was the talk of the offseason as a potential destination for him. Thomas picked off Dak Prescott early on in the game and then again in the fourth quarter to essentially seal the victory for Seattle.

After all of the offseason talk about running the ball and how Chris Carson would be the lead back, the Seahawks certainly made good on that promise with 32 attempts going to Chris Carson alone as he eclipsed 100 yards. 39 carries in total on the ground as Russell Wilson was 16 of 26 with two touchdown passes and 192 yards through the air.

Even with some pieces missing from their offensive line, the Cowboys still have a solid unit and the Seattle defensive line was able to sack Prescott five times, with Jarran Reed getting two and Frank Clark getting his third sack in three games. Next up, the Seahawks will head down to Arizona and we'll preview the game and break down more of Sunday's win coming up on Episode 220 this week.

219: Russell Wilson is not regressing, and can one timeout suggest a power struggle within the team Sep 21, 2018
    Show notes

With questions about whether or not Russell Wilson is holding onto the ball too long, if the offensive line is struggling to hold off the pass rush or receivers are getting open, Adam is digging into this week's tape to see what the biggest problem was in Week 2. Pete Carroll was called out on his post game comments about Chris Carson and now says he was wrong and that the plan was to give Penny carries in the fourth quarter.

The guys talk about some moves from this past week that caused a stir. With problems of depth at linebacker, Seattle signed Mychal Kendricks after he was released from the Browns following his guilty plea for insider trading. Defensive tackle Tom Johnson was waived from the team to make room for a safety who didn't even play, which was curious considering the team's struggles to rush the passer early this season. Pete Carroll explains part of the thinking behind the move.

Andrew Guzman, Cowboys fan from the Common Ground Football Podcast, joins the show this week to talk about how Dallas has looked through the first couple weeks of the season. He explains why Prescott has struggled to this point in the season, and how some of the injuries on the offensive line are contributing to the inability to move the ball early on this season. The Cowboys pass rush is looking good now that their second-year defensive end Taco Charlton is creating pressure opposite of Demarcus Lawrence.

After the interview, the guys take a look at Ben Baldwin's tweet on a sequence in the game before the Russell Wilson interception in the game against the Bears. Based on that sequence, fans are suggesting that a power struggle could be brewing between the Seahawks quarterback and the coaching staff. Pete Carroll is aware of the questions surrounding the timeout and says it was simply because the offense wasn't lined up correctly. The show closes with a discussion of the Bucs quarterback through the first two weeks of the season and his memorable press conference.

Week 2 quick reaction: The Seahawks commitment to the run game vs the Bears Sep 18, 2018
    Show notes

Maybe the show title is missing a question mark. When it comes to a commitment to the run game, it seems like three straight runs to start the game was enough, because Seattle completely moved away with it and had no success through the second and third quarters. The clear lack of a run game was the story of the game as the Seahawks fall to the Bears 24-17.

The score didn't dictate any reason to keep the ball off the ground as Seattle was down only 10-3 at halftime thanks to a long field goal by Janikowski. It wasn't until Seattle started moving the ball on the ground in the fourth quarter that the Seahawks started to see some success against the Bears defensive line. Before the start of the fourth quarter, Wilson had dropped back 14 straight times and was sacked a total of six times throughout the game.

After a Tyler Lockett touchdown got them within a score, the defense got a stop and Seattle had the momentum. As the announcers were cheering the commitment to the run, the Seahawks go to an empty backfield and Russell's pass out to Penny on the sideline was picked off and returned for a touchdown. The guys discuss where to assess blame and it wasn't to the defense, which managed to hold the Bears offense to 17 points without Bobby Wagner, K.J. Wright and their starting corner from the game against the Broncos.

Where was Chris Carson in the second half? According to Coach Carroll he was "gassed" from playing on special teams. The guys offer some positives as the team heads back home to Seattle after Shaquill Griffin had a monster game with two interceptions. We close with a discussion over whether or not Coach Carroll had the opportunity to challenge a potential turnover early on in the game where Earl Thomas appeared to force a fumble.

218: Denver's end zone paint feathering and a Monday Night Football preview with Da Bears Brothers Sep 14, 2018
    Show notes

What were the biggest issues coming out of the game against the Broncos? Was it the 21 pressures allowed by the offensive line or the defensive line's inability to get pressure on Case Keenum? Was it the inexperience of Tre Flowers at corner or the dominant performance by Emmanuel Sanders? Why does the Denver Broncos field crew seem to have problems painting a solid white line in the end zone?

We hit all of the big questions this week while also looking at some of the positive aspects of the game. Will Dissly did something no other Seahawks rookie has done in the history of the franchise. Chris Carson came out of the game looking like the clear favorite to carry the football moving ahead. Michael Dickson was dropping mortar shells onto the field, or maybe it was some other kind of explosive.

Will and Nicholas from Da Bears Brothers join the show this week to break down what we can expect with the matchup against Chicago this week. Have Bears fans had their moment yet that signals Trubisky as a clear franchise quarterback? The guys also let us know what matchups on the offensive line to watch as there are some questions over one lineman's ability to hold his job in the starting lineup with a clear favorite to succeed him waiting on the bench. The guys talk about how they were riding high at halftime during Sunday Night Football, until Rodgers came back and did Aaron Rodgers things.

In the later part of the show, the guys make an important announcement regarding the pickem league and how listeners should proceed with caution when picking their Seahawks matchups. Mike emails in with a logical way to look at the loss to the Broncos. Do better call outs go to armchair scientists for their suggestions that Seattle handled the trip to Denver in the wrong way and to the NFL for an egregious app update. Better at life nods go to our wildland firefighters, including the brother of a member of the flock. With the Seattle Storm earning a WNBA title, they also get a better at life honor.

Week 1 quick reaction: Miscues defensively, two big calls and a missed kick lead to a 27-24 Seahawks loss Sep 10, 2018
    Show notes

Miscommunications on defense led to the Broncos scoring two touchdowns in the first half, but turnovers helped to keep the score close and a pick by Earl Thomas led to an early touchdown for Seattle. Fourth round pick Will Dissly had a huge game in the first half with more than 100 yards receiving and the Seahawks first touchdown of the year.

A missed field goal by the Seabass was the difference in the game, but can we really be sure that the former Raiders kicker is the same guy Seattle signed or is there some trickery going on?

Russell Wilson brought the team from behind with a fourth quarter bomb to Tyler Lockett, but it was the Broncos receiver who was able to celebrate convincingly enough for a conference between officials to swing a call in the Broncos favor. The guys argue over which call had a bigger impact in the game between that one and a Brandon Marshall touchdown that came off the board early.

217: Earl is mad and that could be a good thing, Pro Football Doc David Chao on Doug Baldwin's knee Sep 07, 2018
    Show notes

Making note that any "disrespect has been well noted" Earl Thomas returned to the Seahawks this week early enough that he could be ready to play in the opener against the Broncos. Can we be certain that the disrespect he speaks of is directed at the Seahawks or was it from fans and other teams around the league? The 53-man roster continued to take shape this week as Seattle picked up a couple players off of waivers and some familiar names landed on the practice squad.

Only having a bit of preseason action to work from, Adam and Brandan note that the Broncos third preseason game showed how Denver could be better than the preseason power rankings are giving them credit for. Von Miller is the biggest concern the Seattle should have going into the game and Case Keenum has a track record of performing poorly is his first start of almost every season.

Dr. David Chao, former team head physician for the San Diego Chargers, is now a sports medical analyst for the San Diego Union Tribune. He also hosts the new Pro Football Doc Podcast and interacts on Twitter @ProFootballDoc. Dr. Chao joins the show to talk about what goes on behind the scenes among coaches and team doctors and talks about how he uses video to help offer fans more information about an injury a player may have. He offers his thoughts on Doug Baldwin, K.J. Wright, Dion Jordan and what could have kept Tyler Lockett from reaching full strength last season.

The first week of picks are in as the guys run through the first week of action ahead of this weekend's games. In the do better segment, a Cowboys writer is still unwilling to give up the fight and NFL.com has Seattle looking up at the rest of the NFC West in their power rankings leading into Week 1. Earl is back and it's enough to earn him a better at life nod to close the show.
