    Scottish Watches Podcast #821 : We’re Feeling Blue Daba Dee Daba DIE Oct 08, 2026

    This week the watch industry seems to have decided that normal is overrated. We’ve got G-Shock putting a sapphire case through the kind of engineering exercise you wouldn’t normally associate with a quartz watch, Porsche Design revisiting one of the most influential military chronograph movements, and Formex somehow continuing to make a Swiss titanium watch for under a thousand pound. Then things get considerably more extravagant with Denison using diamonds and onyx in a very different kind of watch, Breguet reworking its Marine Chronograph, and Ulysse Nardin giving the Freak One a pair of seriously good-looking new treatments. There’s also plenty of conversation around whether these watches actually justify their prices, why quartz deserves more respect, what happens when traditional craftsmanship meets modern materials, and what we found when we finally got to see some of these watches in the metal at Geneva Watch Days.

    We’re talking to Karl from Chrome Calibre about Chronography, a brand-new watch show taking place on October 10 at Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin, one of the city’s historic 16th-century theatres. The event brings together more than 20 watch brands and exhibitors, with names including Fortis, Vertex, Christopher Ward, Nomadic, Doxa, Oris, Farer and Moriarty Watches, alongside Irish watchmakers and independent brands such as McGonigal. There’s also a full programme of talks and presentations in the theatre, new-watch launches, a magazine, a charity raffle supporting breast cancer research, and a live recording of the podcast. We get into how Carl put the event together, why he wanted to create something that would give Irish collectors access to brands they normally only encounter online, and the wider goal of putting Ireland’s own watchmaking talent in front of a much bigger audience.

    This week on the Scottish Watches Podcast, we’re getting into some pretty varied releases and plenty of listener chat. We start with H. Moser’s Streamliner Off-Grid, a pair of digital watches developed with Sequent, and get into what it means for a traditionally mechanical brand to put its name on a watch with GPS, GMT, chronograph, perpetual calendar, moon phase, and a whole host of other functions. We look at Hublot’s Classic Fusion x Jeff Koons Balloon Dog, which is the first Hublot in a few years that we’d actually consider adding to our collections, Studio Underd0g’s fish-inspired chronograph with Ahmed Siddiqui, and the latest colourful Neo Digitour from Chronoswiss. We also cover Meistersinger’s Route 66 edition, answer questions about Formex and collecting at different price points, discuss the Day of the Independents event in London, and finish with a watch using genuine Horween American football leather for its dial and strap.
