RIK ROBERTS - MY COMEDY JOURNEY [EP. 155] Nov 01, 2017
    Show notes

Rik Roberts took a business approach to pursuing comedy. Starting in 1991 at an open mic, he quickly got bit by the comedy bug. In this episode, Joel Byars (of the popular HOT BREATH podcast) interviews Rik Roberts in this "pod-swap" part two. In part one of the pod-swap, Rik interviews Joel about his 7 year career in comedy and how he got started. To listen to that interview, click here.

Episode 155 is brought to you by Patreon supporter Doc Kennedy. To learn how you can support the podcast visit www.SchoolOFLaughs.com/Patreon.

Rik Roberts grew up in the Lexington, KY area working on loading docks, as well as horse and tobacco farms. Often times working back to back shifts, Rik was never afraid to put in the work. Little did he know that his communication, speech and theater classes in college would all be put to use in a surprising direction after college. He took that same blue collar approach to hard work to his comedy career. In fact, comedy was a little easier than pulling in 80+ hours a week. Easier on the back and body at least. Just a few weeks prior to recording his 9th comedy album, Rik sits down to talk all things comedy.

We cover a lot of ground in this episode, including:

    • Rik's early days with Midwest Comedy Tool & Die Improv Troupe
    • Having a business mindset early on in the comedy journey
    • Easing into speaking
    • Being more productive
    • Using Zone Focus time to achieve better results
    • George Carlin's influence on my thinking
    • How a weed eater and a hedge clipper can help
    • Side Hustling until success
    • The reward of leading the Christian Comedy Association
    • Using comedy unselfishly
    • Why Rik Roberts doen't chase "trophy goals"

    and a whole lot more!

What You'll Get When You Attend http://bigpodcast.com/ 1. Marketing strategies that work in the real world – not just theory.

We're in the trenches of podcasting, not only working on our own podcasts, but also with dozens of podcasters, helping them grow their audiences. We've seen "podcast marketing" from all sides and We know what's working right now (and what isn't).

    2. The "whole story" from people who are actually living it (and doing something).

We're not here to sell you a pipe dream – we're here to show you what works when it comes to growing a podcast. And what works isn't what most people think…

The "technology" of marketing yourself via a podcast is fun, but none of it matters if you don't have what listeners want — old school, nuts-and-bolts entertainment. And who better than to show you how to deliver that than a guy who's spent the last 25+ years on the road, entertaining crowds night after night, and a guy who's worked with dozens of top entertainers to help them do the same thing?

Big Podcast Bootcamp isn't a traditional "podcast seminar" — it's the "secret weapon" that will give your podcast the edge you need to grow a big audience.

    3. A marketing plan you can put into action immediately.

You'll get a proven marketing plan that works with actionable steps you can put into place immediately. It's not an exaggeration to say that this could change the course of your podcast (and the business behind it) within just 60 days.

What would that be worth to you?

HAVE A SEAT ON THE COUCH [EP. 153] Oct 01, 2017

Are you starting comedy later in life? Trying to find a way to get more stage time? Looking for realistic goals? Then this episode is for you! Today I talk with former student Bo Shuster, about all things comedy.

This episode is brought to you by Patreon supporter Dwight McCormick and by the Clean Comedy Conference!

Bo is a great guy with a heart for the audience. We cover a lot of ground in this episode including:

    • Setting up your own open mic
    • The obsession with finding a stage persona
    • Developing material for your Ultimate Audience
    • His workshop offered at Third Coast Comedy Club
    • The value of comedy goals
    • His litmus test for what jokes to do

And a whole lot more! Look up Bo Shuster these following channels:

    More about Bo Shuster ...

Bo Shuster is the funniest Doctor in Tennessee…..probably.

Smarter than he looks, Bo is a psychiatrist and hospice medicine specialist. While he has practiced his profession for years, he has been a smart aleck his entire life. A native of Chattanooga, Bo grew up in Flat Rock, Alabama and attended school (which was a pretty smart thing to do). He grew tall and strong and moved back to Chattanooga for college, then to Atlanta to learn about doctorin'. He lived among the Yankees for a few years, to the puzzled amusement of the good people of Boston. With his ruddy good looks and irresistible charm he convinced a fine woman to be his bride and they raised their family in Birmingham for almost 20 years. In 2010, like so many of America's most talented, he surrendered to the siren song of Music City, USA and has made his home in Nashville ever since.

Bo is the co-host of Comedy on Tap, a bimonthly comedy open mic at the Belcourt Taps in Nashville. He's also the caretaker of the Comedy Gym, a rehearsal sweatshop for local comics.

Now on the far side of 50 years old, Bo appears to be on the verge of abandoning a successful medical career to pursue fame and fortune in comedy.

Smarter than he looks isn't the same thing as smart.

SUMMIT COMEDY INC., [EP. 149] Aug 01, 2017
    Show notes

On today's show I catch up with Chuck Johnson, CEO of Summit Comedy Inc., in Charlotte, NC.

I first net Chuck in the late nineties when he left Comedy Zone and started his own comedy agency. At that time he was doing a little bit of everything from booking one nighters and clubs to managing a handful of comics and pursuing the college comedy market.

Over time he has narrowed his focus primarily to the college market. With a few dozen comics on his roster and a firm grip on that scene, Chuck stays very busy. Lucky for us, he took a break for a few minutes to give us an inside look at the College comedy market. He tells us what they are looking for, how he looks for talent and what you can do to get on track to test the waters.

This episode is sponsored by Patreon supporter Wayne Fitzpatrick and the Clean Comedy Challenge.

    Summit Comedy Inc., Show Notes

Chuck Johnson attended Appalachian State University in North Carolina. While there he followed his passion and booked bands at a local club. Bands like Dave Matthews and Rusted Root performed on the same bill. He followed up with roughly a three year stint at the Comedy Zone where learned about booking comedians, marketing, promotion and everything comedy business related. In 1998, he went solo and started what is now Summit Comedy Inc., We cover a lot about the college comedy market in this episode!

JEANNE ROBERTSON COMEDY WITH CLASS [EP. 148]

Jeanne Robertson (one of my comedy favorites) joins us today! We discuss a career that started in late 60's and has carried her into her mid seventies! You don't last 54 years in show business unless you are jaw-dropping funny. Jeanne Robertson absolutely is!

Jeanne appeared on my radar a dozen or so years ago when I heard her routines on Laugh USA (SiriusXM Satellite radio). I had never crossed paths with her at a comedy club and kept wondering "Where did this hilarious lady come from?" It turns out she comes from North Carolina and entered comedy through the speaking circuit. She's quick to tell you she is a humorist – not a stand-up comedian. But don't let that fool you. Her stories are full of laughs all the way to the huge, surprise payoff.

With over 126,000 YouTube Subscribers and over 49 MILLION views Jeanne is more popular than ever.

After getting to know her for years through her routines, I finally got the chance to meet up with Jeanne in early July. We talk about her COMEDY WITH CLASS Humor Competition (sign up HERE: www.ComedyWithClass.com/competition) and a whole lot more.
