Field Day - Amateur Radio's Open House!
If you've never been on the air or if you are interested in checking out what Amateur Radio is all about (and if you live in the US), check out Field Day.
Field Day is a contest. The more contacts you make, the more points you get... and it is by far the most popular and publicized event featuring Ham Radio.
But besides being a contest, Field Day is where Amateur Radio operators practice their skills. They operate using emergency power, on temporary antennas, in sometimes uncomfortable conditions.
Field Day is a day to practice getting on the air, making contacts, enjoying a good BBQ, and seeing some old friends that maybe only come out of the woodwork once a year.

One of my favorite scanning activities is to scan the local Air Show. The Air Show at Jones Beach is every Memorial Day weekend and it brings a lot of Military and Civilian Performers.
In this podcast, I'm going to let you know what you need to maximize your scanning during an air show.

Severe Weather Monitoring goes beyond just scanning.
I believe that every home and business should have a weather alert radio in a location that is centralized. A weather alert radio can be a life saving device and should be given the same importance as smoke detectors, CO alarms, Explosive Gas meters, and fire extinguishers.
In this session, we discuss how to use your scanner as a weather alert radio, how to monitor weather activity from SKYWARN via Amateur Radio, GMRS, and FRS.
I also recommend a few dedicated Weather Alert radios that you can purchase for less than $50 (USD).
Step by Step instructions for purchasing and setting up a weather alert radio can be found in the show notes at www.scannerschool.com/session19 or at www.scannerschool.com/wxalert
