Today, we embark on a journey through time, exploring the origins of this enigmatic creature's name, the pioneers who paved the way for cryptozoological research, and the modern-day encounters cataloged by the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO). Finally, we’ll take a closer look at the track evidence that has sparked heated debates in both the scientific and cryptid communities.The Genesis of the Name SasquatchLong before Bigfoot became a household name, indigenous cultures across North America shared stories of large, hairy beings that roamed the forests.
The term Sasquatch itself originates from the Coast Salish word Sésquac, meaning “wild man.” It was introduced to popular culture in the 1920s by J.W. Burns, a Canadian teacher who collected and documented First Nations' accounts of the creature. From there, Sasquatch slowly made its way into the cryptid lexicon, preceding the more famous moniker Bigfoot, which wouldn’t gain traction until the late 1950s.
The pursuit of unknown creatures isn’t new. In the mid-20th century, a new branch of study emerged—cryptozoology—dedicated to investigating creatures that exist on the fringes of scientific recognition. Figures like Bernard Heuvelmans, Ivan T. Sanderson, and Grover Krantz were instrumental in developing this field, applying scientific methods to analyze claims of mysterious creatures, including Sasquatch. Krantz, in particular, became one of the foremost defenders of Bigfoot’s potential existence, arguing that physical evidence—especially footprints—could not be easily dismissed.
The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) has meticulously cataloged thousands of encounters, compiling witness reports from across North America. From fleeting glimpses to prolonged close encounters, the database serves as one of the largest repositories of Bigfoot-related evidence. Patterns have emerged over time—frequent sightings in the Pacific Northwest, eerie vocalizations heard in dense forests, and even alleged physical interactions with the creature. But with this vast amount of anecdotal evidence, the question remains:
Are these reports merely misidentifications, hoaxes, or something more?Tracks and the Debate Over Their AuthenticityFootprints have long been one of the most cited pieces of evidence in the search for Sasquatch. Some tracks, like the famous Cripple Foot print analyzed by Grover Krantz, have been presented as near-definitive proof of the creature’s existence. Others, like the tracks discovered by Paul Freeman, have been widely debated, with skeptics arguing they were fabricated. SO EP:565 Bigfoot And Other Beasts In Alaska! Feb 02, 2025

Welcome to another thrilling episode where we dive into the strange, the unexplained, and the downright terrifying. Tonight, we journey to the untamed wilderness of Alaska—a land of vast tundras, towering mountains, and icy waters—where legendary creatures lurk in the shadows. Our stories come straight from those who have seen the impossible and lived to tell the tale. Strap in as we explore three chilling encounters with Alaska’s mystery beasts—from an eerie roadside meeting with a Dogman, to the looming presence of the Urayuli, and the deep, dark waters where a sea monster may still be hiding.
Story #1: The Dogman of Matanuska Valley Our first story takes place on a lonely Alaskan highway late one October night in 1998. A woman named Melissa H. was driving home through the icy wilderness when she spotted something unusual in her headlights. At first, she thought it was a moose—common enough in these parts—but as she slowed down, she realized this was no ordinary animal. Standing tall on two legs, a wolf-like creature with massive claws and “spiked” fur loomed at the roadside. Its intelligent, glowing eyes locked onto her, and in that brief moment, she knew with absolute certainty—this thing was alive. Not a Halloween prop. Not a bear. Something else. Terrified, she gunned the gas, fishtailing on the ice, but never looking back. Was it a Dogman? A shapeshifter? Or just an exhausted mind playing tricks? Whatever she saw that night, she never forgot it.
Story #2: The Urayuli—Alaska’s Own Bigfoot Deep in the southwest corner of the state, near Lake Iliamna, another legend lurks. Called by many names—Arulataq, Bushman, Nant’ina—but most commonly known as the Urayuli, this towering figure is said to be 7 to 14 feet tall, covered in shaggy hair, and armed with freakishly long arms that nearly reach its ankles. Local stories speak of it stealing livestock, raiding campsites, and even swimming through the icy Alaskan waters. While similar to the classic Sasquatch, its eerie glowing red eyes and its ability to vanish without a trace set it apart. In 1982, a hunting guide snapped a blurry photograph of a massive humanoid silhouette standing atop a ridge near Dillingham. Could it have been the Urayuli, watching the land it has called home for centuries?
Story #3: The Kodiak Island Sea Monster Alaska’s mysteries don’t just walk the land—they also swim beneath its frigid waves. In 1969, a fishing crew scanning the ocean floor off Kodiak Island made a shocking discovery—a sonar reading of a 200-foot-long creature lying at the bottom of the sea. Its shape? Unmistakably dinosaur-like, with a long neck and fins. Then, in the summer of 1971, a group of fishermen reported seeing a grayish, 30-foot-long beast with a horse-like head swimming near their skiff. One crew member fired a rifle at it, but the creature dived beneath their boat and resurfaced on the other side. And in 2002, a fishing vessel in Uganik Bay had a terrifying close encounter when a massive neck and head emerged from the depths, only to disappear moments later. The following summer, something rammed their boat from below with enough force to nearly knock a man overboard. No whales were in the area. Whatever it was, it was big.
Are these encounters proof of ancient creatures, cryptid legends, or something more supernatural? From the shadows of the forests to the icy depths of the sea, Alaska holds mysteries as old as time itself.
