Generative AI Meets Contextual Intelligence

Thomas explains its evolution and multi-model data processing capabilities and focuses on how the new vector engine enhances generative AI applications by improving context awareness. Thomas details its technical features, including new data types and SQL commands, and explores use cases in real estate and audio/image recognition. The conversation also touches on the operational impact, commercial aspects, and upcoming SAP HANA Cloud updates, such as increased storage and cost management tools.

SAP BTP is continuously releasing new roadmap updates, including improvements to the API Management user interface, enhanced HTML5 application integration in SAP Build Work Zone, and a namespace concept in SAP Datasphere.
SAP HANA Cloud is the latest evolution of SAP HANA, offering a managed database-as-a-service with a focus on in-memory, real-time data analytics and multi-model data processing capabilities.
The vector engine is the newest addition to SAP HANA Cloud’s multi-model data processing features, providing the ability to store and process vector data, which is crucial for generative AI scenarios.
The vector engine helps address limitations of large language models by infusing business-specific context and more up-to-date information into AI applications, leading to more accurate and relevant responses.
Technically, the vector engine introduces a new “real vector” data type and integrates with SQL and Python, allowing customers to leverage vector data processing within the core of the SAP HANA Cloud platform.
The vector engine can be used for a variety of use cases, such as similarity search in real estate and audio/image recognition, leveraging the semantic relationships captured in the vector data.
While the vector engine may increase data storage requirements and CPU usage for analytics, there is no additional licensing cost for customers to use this feature, which is included as part of the SAP HANA Cloud offering.

Existing SAP Data Warehouse Cloud customers can seamlessly transition to Data Sphere, as all current installations were automatically renamed and rebranded. Partners and customers can continue to leverage their previous investments in Data Warehouse Cloud under the new Data Sphere platform.
Datasphere is designed to coexist with SAP Data Intelligence Cloud, at least in the near term. While Data Sphere will eventually cover all the capabilities of Data Intelligence Cloud, for now, Data Intelligence Cloud remains the more feature-rich solution for certain use cases. SAP will provide tools to facilitate a smooth transition between the two platforms over time.
The integration between SAP Datasphere and SAP Analytics Cloud has been strengthened, with Datasphere offering a multi-dimensional modeling experience with new features like calculated and restricted measures. This allows Datasphere models to serve as a core data foundation for extended planning and analytics use cases.
The concept of Business Data Fabric is central to SAP’s approach with Datasphere. It aims to deliver an integrated and semantically rich data layer across various data sources, both SAP and non-SAP, helping customers avoid the complexities and costs associated with data movement, especially in scenarios like mergers and acquisitions.
SAP is partnering with leading technology vendors, such as Colibri, Confluent, Databricks, and DataRobot, to build an open data ecosystem around Data Sphere. These integrations enable customers to access business data across multiple cloud deployments and infrastructures.
To get started with SAP Data Sphere, Karsten recommends first exploring the guided tour experience to understand the platform’s features and capabilities. This is followed by the option to sign up for the free 90-day trial, which allows users to import data and connect to additional data sources to set up a pilot project.

In this episode of SAP Integration & Extension Talk, August’ 2022 we engage with experts from Platform Adoption Advisory team for SAP Business Technology Platform. They will talk about how SAP Data Warehouse Cloud and FedML hyperscaler libraries for Azure can be leveraged for creating an end-to-end automated solution for ML experiments on hyperscalers without moving or duplicating data to the hyperscaler.
We then go deeper into understanding how businesses using SAP Business Technology Platform services, such as SAP Data Warehouse Cloud helps them model data coming in from different sources. Then how FedML, uses SAP Data Warehouse Cloud’s federation architecture to query the cloud data sources directly via the unified business layer and helps automate the training, building and deployment using only few lines of code.

Jack Seeburger is a Senior Data Scientist for the Strategic Customer Engagements team of SAP Platform Adoption and Advisory. Jack solves unique problems by collaborating closely with customers to develop custom BTP solutions. Focusing on Machine Learning and AI applications he combines his backgrounds in Linguistics, Computer Science and Economics to bring new innovations from 0 to 1.
Jack first joined SAP as part of the SAP Next Talent program where he still mentors new graduate Data Scientists. Jack brought his unique skillset to the Montas Del Plata collaboration highlighted at TechEd 2021 and the Levi’s Intelligent Virtual Inventory Reservation system. Jack has recently been focusing on developing new repeatable hyperscaler architectures and the Federated Machine Learning Library.
