Can California Log Its Way Out Of Wildfires? Nov 26, 2018
    Show notes

After the Camp Fire obliterated the town of Paradise this month in California’s most horrific wildfire to date, everyone from President Trump to Gov. Jerry Brown raised concerns about the state’s overgrown and drought-stricken forests. Both administrations called for a significant increase in logging on federal and private lands earlier this year to thin timberland characterized as tinderboxes ready to explode. However, according to research scientists and ecologists, wildfire’s increasing toll on life and property in recent years has been overwhelmingly driven by global warming and patterns of development — not the state’s most densely wooded areas. http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/environment/sd-me-wildfire-logging-climate-change-20181125-story.html

The Next Line Of Defense Against Package Thieves? Doorbell Cameras Nov 23, 2018
    Show notes

he video is crystal clear: A woman hops off her bicycle, runs up to the house and grabs the box off the porch. In a flash, she dashes back to the sidewalk, tosses the package into the front basket of her accomplice’s bicycle and they pedal off. Making a clean getaway. Well, not really. The doorbell security camera on the Oceanside home captured every detail of the Nov. 5 theft, in color. Later, when the couple living in the home reviewed the video, they decided to share it through the Ring Neighbors app to let others know there were package thieves in the area. Turns out, Oceanside police were able to use her video to identify the two suspects. They are now seeking arrest warrants and “arrests are imminent,” said Oceanside police Sgt. John McKean, who oversees property and financial crime investigations. The Oceanside Police Department is only the second police agency in California to partner with Ring’s Neighbors app. The first was the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, Ring spokesman Morgan Culbertson said.

What San Diego's Homeless Have To Be Thankful For This Thanksgiving Nov 22, 2018
    Show notes

Since last year's hepatitis A outbreak, San Diego has been more aggressive in tackling the region's homeless problem. Gary Warth, who covers homelessness for the Union-Tribune, speaks about what has changed over the past year, and how Thanksgiving is transformative for many of the region's homeless. -- https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/communities/north-county/sd-me-ray-chavez-20181121-story.html

No Black Friday chaos? No problem for top malls Nov 21, 2018
    Show notes

A number of shopping trends are converging to create quite the holiday oxymoron: Retail optimism despite major store closings and noticeably thinner crowds at malls on historically high foot-traffic days. For the holiday shopping season between November and January, Deloitte, which puts out an annual retail forecast, expects total sales, excluding motor vehicles and gasoline, to exceed $1.1 trillion. That amounts to growth of more than 5 percent over last year’s purse. What’s more, 78 percent of consumers, encouraged by the economy, plan to spend as much as, or more than, they did a year ago, with the average holiday spend per person growing from $1,226 in 2017 to $1,536 in 2018. --- The drone survey is here: https://sdredc.typeform.com/to/mH8sqT https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/politics/sd-me-drone-survey-20181119-story.html

Crisis In The Pews: San Diego Catholics Shaken By Revelations Of Abuse, Cover-ups Nov 20, 2018
    Show notes

When San Diego’s Catholic Bishop held a series of “listening sessions” at parishes around the diocese, he knew he’d hear from Catholics who were upset about the ongoing revelations of priestly sexual abuse. Still, Bishop McElroy was probably unprepared for the level of fury and disgust he encountered. One of our enterprise reporters, Peter Rowe, attended one of those sessions and then spoke with many of the faithful. He has reported a crisis in the pews. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/religion/sd-me-crisis-pew-20181118-story.html

Tijuana Braces For The Migrant Caravan Nov 16, 2018
    Show notes

Carrying blankets and backpacks, a group of 356 Central American migrants arrived in Tijuana this week, joining dozens of other arrivals from a large caravan that has been making its way to the U.S. border. But even as authorities scrambled to find bed space for them in the city’s migrant shelters, Baja California officials reported that yet another group numbering about 200 was aboard buses traveling through the neighboring state of Sonora and expected to arrive in Tijuana within hours. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/border-baja-california/sd-me-caravan-tijuana-20181113-story.html https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/immigration/sd-me-tijuana-shelter-20181114-story.html

Climate contrarian uncovers scientific error, upends major ocean warming study Nov 15, 2018
    Show notes

Researchers with UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Princeton University recently walked back scientific findings published last month that showed oceans have been heating up dramatically faster than previously thought as a result of climate change. In a paper published Oct. 31 in the journal Nature, researchers found that ocean temperatures had warmed 60 percent more than outlined by the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/environment/sd-me-climate-study-error-20181113-story.html https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/environment/sd-me-scripps-warming-ocean-20181029-story.html
