Is The Chancellor Of UC San Diego A Bully? Jan 24, 2019
    Show notes

He's overseen $2.5 billion in new buildings in the past five years. Another $4 billion or so are in the works. Private donations are at an all-time high. So is enrollment, which hit nearly 39,000 last fall. "Pradeep Khosla is the best chancellor UC San Diego has ever had," said Rajesh Gupta, one of the school's computer scientists. "The. Best." Many agree. But midway through his seventh year in office, questions are being raised about Khosla’s management style. Nine current and former employees told the Union-Tribune that a University of California Office of the President (UCOP) investigator asked them in recent months whether Khosla or senior staff had exhibited bullying behavior toward campus employees. Seven of those told the investigator that Khosla can be insulting, demeaning, rude or threatening. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/education/sd-me-khosla-bullying-20190107-story.html

National crackdown on opioids has a side effect: harming legitimate chronic pain patients Jan 22, 2019
    Show notes

An estimated 25 million Americans live with chronic pain, and those on opioids have become a liability that many doctors would rather not deal with altogether. Doctors are being scrutinized more than ever for their prescribing practices. There is criticism that one watchdog campaign by the California Medical Board has gone too far. Many primary care physicians, too nervous to manage long-term treatments and not willing to take the extra time required of these high-maintenance patients, are passing them off onto overburdened pain specialists. Reporter Kristina Davis discusses the tricky reality of opioid prescriptions. --- For more: Read the main story: http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/health/sd-me-pain-patients-opiods-20190120-story.html Fentanyl has taken over America's drug market. Pedestrian deaths spiked in 2018. Here's what San Diego is doing about it. Jan 18, 2019
    Show notes

Mayor Kevin Faulconer surprised pedestrian safety advocates Tuesday when he announced plans to improve hundreds of dangerous intersections throughout the city in the next few years. “Seniors, students and pedestrians should be able to use a crosswalk without having to dodge oncoming traffic,” Faulconer told a crowd gathered for the State of the City speech at the Balboa Theatre downtown. So this year, we’ll begin work on nearly 300 more safe intersection projects throughout the city,” he added. Officials said the city would start installing pedestrian countdown timers and high-visibility crosswalks at crash-prone intersections in the summer of 2020. The first 50 intersections are expected to be completed before Faulconer leaves office, with the remaining upgrades slated to finish by 2022, according to city officials.

Faulconer calls for aggressive development to fight homelessness and create affordable housing Jan 17, 2019
    Show notes

Solving San Diego’s housing crisis with an overhaul of city bureaucracy, expanding efforts to reduce homelessness and making the city a national leader on the environment are among Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s priorities for 2019. Faulconer used his annual State of the City address on Tuesday to lay out those goals and several others, including efforts to ensure the city’s contractors reflect San Diego’s diversity and upgrading 300 dangerous intersections. The boldest proposals in the mayor’s speech focused on housing, as he wants to eliminate building height limits in many neighborhoods, wipe out parking requirements and make it more profitable to build low-income housing. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/politics/sd-me-faulconer-speech-20190115-story.html

Why The San Diego Safari Park Euthanized A Baby Giraffe Jan 16, 2019
    Show notes

A 5-month-old male giraffe born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park was euthanized near the end of December after being gored in the stomach, likely by an antelope, said zoo spokeswoman Christina Simmons. The giraffe, named Kumi, was born Aug. 6, 2018. He was in good health until he was discovered the morning of Dec. 29 with the gore wound. A veterinary assessment found that the wound couldn’t be treated, Simmons said, so animal care staff made the decision to put him down. Border Dispatch: Breaking Down Facts On The Border Wall Jan 15, 2019
    Show notes

In President Donald Trump’s public push for $5.7 billion to extend existing border fencing by 215 miles, he has painted a dire picture filled with deadly drugs, violent criminals and bloodshed. Meanwhile, congressional Democrats argue the border crisis Trump is referring to either doesn’t exist or was manufactured for political reasons. Besides, they contend, a wall wouldn’t solve many of the problems Trump has identified. It is a debate filled with facts — facts offered by each side that tend to support their own perspectives and agendas. The truth — as it often does — lies somewhere in between. It doesn’t help that immigration is an incredibly complex issue, one that Congress has struggled to agree on and failed to comprehensively reform for decades. Here is what the data, research and expert analysis show. --- Read the story: http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/border-baja-california/sd-me-border-wall-primer-20190113-story.html
