WELCOME TO THE HAGSTONE COVEN.

There’s a particular joy in beach treasure: a rare shell, a shark’s egg sack, or an interesting rock - but what is extra special is finding a stone steeped in folk belief and holding it up to spy through it to the sea beyond.

Witch stones, or, as they are commonly called, hag stones, have for centuries been believed to have magical uses. They have been called hex stones, lucky stones, pledge-stones or druid stones. In German, they are Hühnergötter, or "chicken gods,” but in Latin they were called silex pertussis, meaning "perforated flint. “ Some know them as Odin stones or eye stones, Cailleach stones, adder stones, or wish stones.

Names vary from place to place, but they all tie into folk superstitions and beliefs. People felt there was something divine or otherworldly about a stone with a naturally occurring hole, and so they became symbols and tools of magical prowess, protection or warding against witchcraft...

Pine Cones: Blue Moon 🌑 | Rowan & Pine Shorts May 29, 2026

It has finally arrived. The formal beginning of the lighter half of the year, Bealtaine 2026, heralded the rise of the Flower moon, This name was originally given by the Algonquin people to the full moon in May thanks to the abundance of blooming flowers. Other names include the hare moon, the corn planting moon, and the milk moon. But this month has another, more significant moon to watch out for - the Blue moon.

A Blue Moon is different from the monthly or seasonal moon names like the flower moon - it isn't restricted to a time of year. It is a movable feast.

A full lunar cycle is a little over 28 days long. However, a calendar year is 365 days, which means that during some years, you may end up with thirteen full moons instead of twelve, depending on where in the month the lunar cycle falls. This is the Blue Moon.

The Divine Feminine has been co-opted poorly by the Conservative Trad Wife movement, which is nefariously convincing young women to be complicit in their own loss of autonomy. We talk about what Divine Femininity REALLY means - the strength, nourishment and community that complement the structure of the Divine Masculine, which exists in all of us. We then talk about women's intuition and tap into some divination practices as a means of connecting with our inner selves. St Roch, or San Rocco, was a medieval nobleman who gave up his wealth and title to care for plague victims. After succumbing to pestilence, some time in exile, and help from a very special dog, his fame evolved into a distinctly witchy practice of iconography, offerings, and ritual not so different from its pagan predecessors...

“Twilight arrives on an Orkney shore. In the space between land and sea, the Finfolk are said to slip silently from their hidden kingdom, seeking humans to drag below the waves.”

The Finfolk are a race unique to Orkney and Shetland, creatures of contradiction much like the islands themselves: part sea, part land, both wild and ordered. Amphibious and powerful, they can step from waves onto shore as they choose, living comfortably between two worlds. .Unlike the mermaids we might picture, Finfolk are fully humanoid - men and women alike -though their daughters sometimes appear with mermaid tails. Their bodies are draped with fins that fall like clothing, making it difficult to tell them from land-dwellers at a distance. Up close, the fins reveal their otherworldly nature. They are strong, athletic, and extraordinary sailors, able to cross the tempestuous North Sea in mere strokes of an oar...

Corpse roads, also known as coffin roads, lych ways, bier ways, or burial paths, were historic routes used to carry the dead from rural homesteads to churches with burial rights. Born of necessity in remote parts of medieval Europe, these sombre trails wove through moor and woodland, over streams and stiles, the last journey of the dead.

Niamh is carrying the torch without Emily for the foreseeable and of course that means a Ewan episode! We take a hard look at the Final Girl trope - that horror genre staple that sees the underestimated, underskilled, underappreciated female protagonist left standing alone, covered in blood and forever changed at the end of the story. As with all stories, there is a mythical origin - specifically the Mespotamian goddess Inanna, AKA Ishtar: goddess of love and war, patroness of sexworkers, scorned woman and feminine icon. We contrast Inanna with her modern counterparts: Ripley (Alien), Sidney (Scream), and Sarah (The Descent) - full spoilers for all those movies herein!

There’s something unsettling about a sealed room, especially one hidden inside a home. In 1976, a phone call to the National Museum of Ireland reported the discovery of a “cave” during construction work outside Wicklow Town. Dr Joseph Raftery, Keeper of Irish Antiquities, sent young archaeologist Eamonn Kelly t to investigate, on what would turn out to be his first ever fieldwork assignment. The report was misleading: it wasn’t a cave, or even a souterrain, but a sealed-up brick oven connected to a fireplace in Coolbeg House. The structure had been blocked off in the early twentieth century.

Inside that bricked-up oven was a strange and silent cache.
