    Rotten Mango – Stephanie Soo

Rotten but still a little sweet! Rotten Mango is a true crime + all things spooky podcast. We love doing deep dives into the darkest crimes and we tend to not leave out any details – which can get a little rotten at times. If you want deep dives in the psychology of killers, no holding back storytelling of crimes, and stories of lesser known criminals from around the world this is the place for you.

#151: “The Bad Vegan” (Case of Sarma Melngailis) Mar 30, 2022
    Show notes

Have you heard about how to boil a frog? They say if you throw a frog into a pot of boiling water - it will jump out.

But if you throw a frog in a pot of cool water… and you slowly start turning up the heat.

Slowly but surely. So slow that it’s just incremental changes in heat. It’s said the frog will sit there, completely unaware of its impending doom, and it will be cooked to death.

The frog has been “willingly” cooked alive.

Do you think humans are any smarter than frogs? Maybe not.

#150: The Chinese Corpse Dungeon (Serial Killer Jia Wenge) Mar 27, 2022
    Show notes

She woke up disoriented in the dark. She didn’t know where she was… oh god, what’s that awful smell?

Her hand was touching something sticky on the ground. When her eyes slowly adjusted to the dark she saw - bodies. Dead bodies. Stacked on top of each other. Some of their faces were frozen still as if they were still screaming.

The stickiness on her hand? The bodies coming together and forming a sticky sludge filled with maggots.

Now the question - how would she escape the dungeon?

#149: The Baton Rouge Cannibal (Serial Killer Sean Gillis) Mar 23, 2022
    Show notes

Sean hopped into his car to pick up his girlfriend. He was always so happy to see her. He couldn’t get enough of her.

“Honey bunny” I’m over here! Sean’s girlfriend slid into the passenger side and he leaned in for a kiss.

He couldn’t help but pull back with a giant grin. He wondered if she could taste it. He could…

The taste of human flesh always lingered in his mouth.

#148: The Mysterious Vidocq Society Mar 20, 2022
    Show notes

The FBI agent walked into the warehouse. It was exactly what he expected…

A concrete fortress, barely any natural light, and then he saw it. The walls. The walls were filled with rows and rows of decapitated heads, skulls, and bones. Some still had rotting flesh on them - others were completely skeletonized.

When the FBI agent made it to the back he came face to face with the man. He was shirtless, barefoot, and stirring a giant pot with a head inside.

“I wasn’t expecting you today” - the man said...

Do they know each other? What is behind the mysterious Vidocq Society?

Book Rec: “Murder Room” - by Michael Capuzzo (One of my fave books this year and brb while I go read all his other books. Do yourself a favor and read this one!)

#147: The Bodies In The Abandoned Mine (Case of Alice & Gerald Uden) Mar 16, 2022
    Show notes

The gas station attendant was helping him fill up his car. What timing. It was a hot summer’s day, the sweat trickled down his forehead, and he was anxious to get going. The two of them stood awkwardly at the back of his truck waiting for his tank to get full.

    Drip. Drip. Drip.

“Sir, I think your car is leaking.” They both looked down to see a red liquid drip down onto the pavement. The gas attendant didn’t know that there were 3 bodies in the trunk - and the driver was going to keep it that way.

Book Rec: “Alice & Gerald” - by Ron Franscell (an amazing author who really dives deep into the emotions of a case)

#146: The Pathological Liar & The Corpse (Case of Casey Anthony) Mar 13, 2022
    Show notes

It’s said that some pathological liars are even considered functionally delusional. They can even pass a lie detector test. They believe their own lies.

Sometimes they re-write their lies and memories on the spot. You can see their eyes flutter, a shift in attitude, and boom. They are living a new reality and you almost feel like you’re the one going crazy.

But as humans, we can detect lies, right? Or can we? What happens when a pathological liar takes a stand in front of the whole nation to say - “my child has been kidnapped by her nanny! Help me!”

    Would you believe her?

#145: He Was Shot Then He Fought To Save His Attacker’s Life (Terrorist Mark Stroman) Mar 09, 2022
    Show notes

The public was split. Most wanted him dead. He didn’t deserve to live, he killed 2 people, and shot another in the face.

Another group of people, a smaller group, fought to save his life. Activists, professors, and lawyers fought hard. They knew he was guilty but they fought.

One man fought the hardest. He traveled the world campaigning for his release. The world was shocked. They asked him: are you sure you want him to be free? Are you out of your mind? Do you need psychiatric help?

“But… but didn’t he shoot you in the face?”

Book: “True American” - by Anand Giridharadas (this is one of the best books I’ve read all year… it’s incredibly emotional and I highly recommend it)

#144: The Lake Waco Murders (Case of David “Chili” Spence) Mar 02, 2022
    Show notes

Think about your dog, cat, or any beloved pet. If you don’t have one - imagine one. Would you ever chain your dog up to your chair all day long while you and your buddies watched TV?

Would you make the dog beg you on all fours to use the restroom?

And if the dog did something you didn’t like - would you ever dream of chaining up outside to a tree in the cold winter night?

You wouldn’t dream of doing that to a dog. It would make you a horrible person.

But that’s how David liked to treat his girlfriends. What does that make him? A murderer.
