    Show notes

Welcome to the 1% Better Podcast.
Leah Olszewski has had quite the journey so far. She is an award-winning Entrepreneur, a Commissioned Officer in the US Army, holds an MBA & PMP and has just come through a very challenging couple of years personally. But, as you'll hear, she's looking forward to what the future will bring with focus and resilience.
During the interview, Leah talks me through the path life has had in store for her, touching on early years growing up, lessons learned at university, finally realising her ambition of becoming a commissioned officer, to becoming an accidental entrepreneur with her sister, and, in more recent times, dealing with domestic violence in her personal life. Thankfully, she's a very strong and determined lady and is now focusing on the next chapter in her journey.
You should listen to this podcast as it's always interesting, has many turning points and touches on so many valuable lessons that you can take something from.

Madeleine Black on Overcoming Sexual Violence, Finding Forgiveness & Discovering Her Voice - EP062 May 24, 2018
    Show notes

    Hi all,
In this week's episode, I have the privilege to share a conversation with Madeleine Black about her debut book, Unbroken. This is a story with real suffering, pain, and trauma. It is also one that has compassion, forgiveness, healing, recovery, and hope.
In the memoir, Madeleine tells her deeply moving, important and empowering story, as she discovers that life is about how a person chooses to recover from adversity.
At the age of 13, Madeleine Black was violently gang-raped. For years afterward, she lived in a state of shock, self-loathing and self-harm. It took her years to confront the buried memories and pain of the attack. When her own daughter turned 13, all these memories fully resurfaced. This time, Madeleine knew it was time to find a way to accept what had happened, find a way to forgive, and move forward with her own life.
In 2014, when Madeleine Black decided to share her story publicly for the first time, the reaction and response was one she didn't expect. So many women and men got in touch and explained how reading her story gave them courage and hope. Inspired by this, Madeleine kept writing her story, which ultimately lead to her memoir, which she openly admits was never her initial plan.
I hope you take something from this and I thank Madeleine for sharing this story with me and now with you. More details on the topics from the show below with links to books & how to connect in with Madeleine.
    Advice & Tips:
Working through the Trauma, Exercises that she used that worked well.
    Talking Therapy & Therapeutic Massage
The way in was the way out!
Advice – it’s never ever too late to find your voice, to go and get help. Give the shame oxygen, to be listened to, be heard and believed.

Olive Loughnane on Tenacity, Setting Goals, the Eye of the Tiger & Leaving Nothing on the Road! EP060 May 11, 2018
    Show notes

My guest this week is 2009 World Champion in the 20km walk, Olive Loughnane. I was very much looking forward to chatting with Olive to get a view into what made her the highly successful champion that she was. So, naturally I was delighted when we connected back in February and she ‘walked’ (sorry) me though her career.
As a big sport fan, with a huge interest in performance psychology and how to get that extra 1%, listening to Olive talk about her gradual improvement over the years, having fierce determination and, of course, never giving up, was a real treat.
During the conversation, Olive shared stories that stood out during her journey and breaks down what the process is and what the key ingredients are to become a world champion. She almost makes it sound possible for the average person!
    The topics covered include:
Being Originally from Cork and moved to Galway at the age of 4.
Spending school and her degree years in Galway
Earliest memories linked to the Moscow Olympics in 1980
Having a fondness and love for the outdoors
Always being very determined from a very young age
Starting out in Athletics at the age of 12
The Value of Volunteers & Influencers along the way
Cross Country was Olives first big event
Loving being part of a team
Having a draw towards the Walk as it was endurance based and technical –
Meeting Michael Lane – another volunteer and he was a big influence
Having ‘the Eye of the Tiger’, determination & tenacity
Sport is as much about the mental tenacity as it is about the underlying physical talents
Learning to set big Setting Big Goals
Setting high standards for herself & Control the controllable
For Olive, Sport Psychology was about taking a step back and relaxing and learning to go with the flow
    Taking Calculated Risk taking
Being a Statistician and being very analytical in nature
Nominated Athlete of the Year in Leaving Cert marking a breakthrough point
Sacrifices didn’t seem so big and the high standards became the norm
Breaking down the steps taken to qualify for the Olympics
    Logical and Planning
Breaking the Big goal into Medium goals and then smaller goals
    Making it more manageable
Gradual building of confidence – short-term
SMART Goals being applied to getting to the Olympics
Where the Magic comes in with Goals – Realistic is the part that could be different!!
Plateaus in the career and dealing with these
In 2003-5 leaving some of it on the road by overtraining
Learning that her training plan needed to be managed more
Working with Sports scientists & listening to the data more
The Walk was an individual race but a team sport
Being very lucky to have a team of people around her
Overcoming from challenges and learning from these
Having to reach an Olympic standard again within 6 months the birth of her daughter or face a funding cut
10 days after having a C-Section starting to train again and full training 6 weeks later
Getting Burnt out in 2007 after training too hard too quickly
Still having the belief in 2007 that she could still do this – didn’t matter who believed it
2009 training – calming down and finishing 7thin Beijing gave her confidence
Knowing that the race in 2009 was her day in Berlin total belief this was the day for a medal
Seeing the calmness as the main difference – here to do the job! Visualization techniques – focusing on the process not the result
Sport is all about the process – and it is!
    Intuition v Data & Facts
Control v Letting go with Goals
Life after retirement working with the high-performance committee of Sport Ireland
Career convergence with Analytical and Experience
    1% Better tips:
The Value of Volunteers & Influencers along the way
Focusing on the process – awareness that the pain will come but being ready
Accepting there would be challenges, expecting them and overcoming them
Having positive mantras – my last 5km is always my strongest
Developing a calmness in competition – building awareness
    Controlling the controllable
Developing a Goal System – using SMART & Heart!
Setting big long term goals, then medium term goals, then smaller shorter goals

Jim Breen on Cycle Against Suicide, Mental Health at Work & Knowing it's OK to ask for Help! EP059 May 03, 2018
    Show notes

Mental Health, Depression, Suicide Awareness, Asking for Help and knowing that it’s Ok not to feel Ok are at the centre of this week's podcast conversation with founder of Cycle Against Suicide Jim Breen.
Jim Breen is the Founder and Chairman of PulseLearning (www.PulseLearning.com) and Chairman of Becloudsmart (www.Becloudsmart.com). Jim is also a Director at Cork BIC (www.Corkbic.com) and an Advisor to The Wheel (www.Wheel.ie).
He came to public attention in 2012 when he appeared on the TV Show Secret Millionaire. It was during his appearance on this show, while spending time working with a suicide awareness group in Dublin, that he hit a breaking point. Witnessing first-hand the destructive nature that depression and mental illness could bring during the show, he faced a tipping point of his own. One that he had to face head on.
As you’ll hear from my conversation with Jim, he’s been through a lot in the last 6 years. During this period, he’s been on his own immense journey, not only working through his own depression and mental health challenges, but also helping raise the awareness of the challenges others face that far too often goes unspoken. One very notable outcome of this is the charity cycle against suicide that Jim helped set up in 2013 on the back of his appearance on the show.
This is without doubt one of the most engaging and real conversations I’ve done so far in the two seasons. I’d highly recommend you give it a listen.
Areas covered during the show include:
How Depression, Anxiety, and Self-Harm are not sexist, racist, or have any other bias, they can attack anyone
Opening up about Jim’s own battle with Mental Health on this TV show
Knowing by talking about it, he would do something about it for himself.
Overwhelmed by the response from the public asking ‘how ‘can we help’
The Catalyst for Cycle against Suicide in April 2013
Progress made in Ireland in the last 6 years with Mental Health
50% of those that die from suicide had never asked for help.
Asking for help is a predictor of saving lives. This is the battle!!! 50% never asked!
The ‘I Am Here’ program launched in Australia on mental wellbeing in the workplace. Focusing on three steps.
    Show you care!
    Ask the question!
    Call for help!
Mental Health in the workplace still highly stigmatized and is the last bastion of stigma! Telling your boss hasn’t been yet addressed!
Having an entrepreneurial mindset that helped deal with depression and the challenges
Discuss how Ireland and other developed countries are approaching mental health
Cycle Against Suicide success and the community element
The Wheel – the CEO Deidre Garvey – Spark Change – Change Agents
    Three Truths on Therapy:
    Skillset
    Readiness
    Chemistry!
Experiences with different therapists and progress made
Having a stronger resilience now than ever before
Instances of depression happen less often and, when they do, last much shortr
Key ingredients to being healthy - therapy, meditation, exercise, food, sleep, and little or no Alcohol
    Doing v Being
    No Regrets
Setting up PulseLearning at 29 - working more, sleeping less, pushing hard, it’s not the smartest way at all!
Now, with BeCloudSmart, spending 80% of the time coaching and 20% doing!
Being human -making mistakes in life and business that hurt now more than in the past!
Figure out what the lesson is, figure it out and how to do better next time round
The reasoning being the Cycle Against Suicide Concept and the deliberate thinking around this.
    Observing, not reacting
    1% Better Tips:
Switching the mindset – from I GET to rather than I HAVE to!!
    Approach with Food:
The closer it is to the ground, the better!
Deliberately eat things that are not close to the ground some days!
Diminishing returns going clean completely all the time!
    Experience with Depression:
It will pass! It comes and it goes. It will Pass! The feeling that you have right now, will pass. It comes and it passes. Knowing it will pass!
Meditation – Trying different approaches and using Insight Timer (App)
    Advice
Take advice from people who have been on the journey rather than those that have not!
For every piece of advice, there is an opposite piece of advice – try and find counter truths – try to hold these close as you’re deciding what makes sense for you!
Try to get advice that is not the advice of the majority!
    Success
This is all about being grateful to be able to take part in many things.
The journey Jim is on right now, he is getting a lot of purpose from this. He can apply these in the Wheel, or in other areas, he can help others.
Working on the wheel, the I Am Here campaign and working with schools
